Point-interacting Brownian motions in the KPZ universality class

We discuss chains of interacting Brownian motions. Their time reversal invariance is broken because of asymmetry in the interaction strength between left and right neighbor. In the limit of a very steep and short range potential one arrives at Brownian motions with oblique reflections. For this model we prove a Bethe ansatz formula for the transition probability and self-duality. In case of half-Poisson initial data, duality is used to arrive at a Fredholm determinant for the generating function of the number of particles to the left of some reference point at any positive time. A formal asymptotics for this determinant establishes the link to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class.

From duality to determinants for q-TASEP and ASEP

We prove duality relations for two interacting particle systems: the $q$-deformed totally asymmetric simple exclusion process ($q$-TASEP) and the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). Expectations of the duality functionals correspond to certain joint moments of particle locations or integrated currents, respectively. Duality implies that they solve systems of ODEs. These systems are integrable and for particular step and half-stationary initial data we use a nested contour integral ansatz to provide explicit formulas for the systems' solutions, and hence also the moments. We form Laplace transform-like generating functions of these moments and via residue calculus we compute two different types of Fredholm determinant formulas for such generating functions. For ASEP, the first type of formula is new and readily lends itself to asymptotic analysis (as necessary to reprove GUE Tracy--Widom distribution fluctuations for ASEP), while the second type of formula is recognizable as closely related to Tracy and Widom's ASEP formula [Comm. Math. Phys. 279 (2008) 815--844, J. Stat. Phys. 132 (2008) 291--300, Comm. Math. Phys. 290 (2009) 129--154, J. Stat. Phys. 140 (2010) 619--634]. For $q$-TASEP, both formulas coincide with those computed via Borodin and Corwin's Macdonald processes [Probab. Theory Related Fields (2014) 158 225--400]. Both $q$-TASEP and ASEP have limit transitions to the free energy of the continuum directed polymer, the logarithm of the solution of the stochastic heat equation or the Hopf--Cole solution to the Kardar--Parisi--Zhang equation. Thus, $q$-TASEP and ASEP are integrable discretizations of these continuum objects; the systems of ODEs associated to their dualities are deformed discrete quantum delta Bose gases; and the procedure through which we pass from expectations of their duality functionals to characterizing generating functions is a rigorous version of the replica trick in physics.

A generalized Asymmetric Exclusion Process with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ stochastic duality

We study a new process, which we call ASEP$(q,j)$, where particles move asymmetrically on a one-dimensional integer lattice with a bias determined by $q\in (0,1)$ and where at most $2j\in\mathbb{N}$ particles per site are allowed. The process is constructed from a $(2j+1)$-dimensional representation of a quantum Hamiltonian with $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ invariance by applying a suitable ground-state transformation. After showing basic properties of the process ASEP$(q,j)$, we prove self-duality with several self-duality functions constructed from the symmetries of the quantum Hamiltonian. By making use of the self-duality property we compute the first $q$-exponential moment of the current for step initial conditions (both a shock or a rarefaction fan) as well as when the process is started from an homogeneous product measure.

Spectral theory for the q-Boson particle system

We develop spectral theory for the generator of the q-Boson (stochastic) particle system. Our central result is a Plancherel type isomorphism theorem for this system. This theorem has various implications. It proves the completeness of the Bethe ansatz for the q-Boson generator and consequently enables us to solve the Kolmogorov forward and backward equations for general initial data. Owing to a Markov duality with q-TASEP, this leads to moment formulas which characterize the fixed time distribution of q-TASEP started from general initial conditions. The theorem also implies the biorthogonality of the left and right eigenfunctions. We consider limits of our q-Boson results to a discrete delta Bose gas considered previously by van Diejen, as well as to another discrete delta Bose gas that describes the evolution of moments of the semi-discrete stochastic heat equation (or equivalently, the O'Connell-Yor semi-discrete directed polymer partition function). A further limit takes us to the delta Bose gas which arises in studying moments of the stochastic heat equation / Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Stationary correlations for the 1D KPZ equation

We study exact stationary properties of the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation by using the replica approach. The stationary state for the KPZ equation is realized by setting the initial condition the two-sided Brownian motion (BM) with respect to the space variable. Developing techniques for dealing with this initial condition in the replica analysis, we elucidate some exact nature of the height fluctuation for the KPZ equation. In particular, we obtain an explicit representation of the probability distribution of the height in terms of the Fredholm determinants. Furthermore from this expression, we also get the exact expression of the space-time two-point correlation function.

Replica approach to the KPZ equation with half Brownian motion initial condition

We consider the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with half Brownian motion initial condition, studied previously through the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process. We employ the replica Bethe ansatz and show that the generating function of the exponential moments of the height is expressed as a Fredholm determinant. From this the height distribution and its asymptotics are studied. Furthermore using the replica method we also discuss the multi-point height distribution. We find that some nice properties of the deformed Airy functions play an important role in the analysis.

Exact solution for the stationary Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

We obtain the first exact solution for the stationary one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. A formula for the distribution of the height is given in terms of a Fredholm determinant, which is valid for any finite time $t$. The expression is explicit and compact enough so that it can be evaluated numerically. Furthermore, by extending the same scheme, we find an exact formula for the stationary two-point correlation function.

Combinatorics of the asymmetric exclusion process on a semi-infinite lattice

We study two versions of the asymmetric exclusion process (ASEP) -- an ASEP on a semi-infinite lattice with an open left boundary, and an ASEP on a finite lattice with open left and right boundaries -- and we demonstrate a surprising relationship between their stationary measures. The semi-infinite ASEP was first studied by Liggett and then Grosskinsky, while the finite ASEP had been introduced earlier by Spitzer and Macdonald-Gibbs-Pipkin. We show that the finite correlation functions involving the first L sites for the stationary measures on the semi-infinite ASEP can be obtained as a nonphysical specialization of the stationary distribution of an ASEP on a finite one-dimensional lattice with L sites. Namely, if the output and input rates of particles at the right boundary of the finite ASEP are beta and delta, respectively, and we set delta=-beta, then this specialization corresponds to sending the right boundary of the lattice to infinity. Combining this observation with work of the second author and Corteel, we obtain a combinatorial formula for finite correlation functions of the ASEP on a semi-infinite lattice.

A systematic way to find and construct exact finite dimensional matrix product stationary states

We explain how to construct matrix product stationary states which are composed of finite-dimensional matrices. Our construction explained in this article was first presented in a part of [Hieida and Sasamoto:J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 37 (2004) 9873] for general models. In this article, we give more details on the treatment than in the above-mentioned reference, for one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process(ASEP).

Growing interfaces uncover universal fluctuations behind scale invariance

Stochastic motion of a point -- known as Brownian motion -- has many successful applications in science, thanks to its scale invariance and consequent universal features such as Gaussian fluctuations. In contrast, the stochastic motion of a line, though it is also scale-invariant and arises in nature as various types of interface growth, is far less understood. The two major missing ingredients are: an experiment that allows a quantitative comparison with theory and an analytic solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation, a prototypical equation for describing growing interfaces. Here we solve both problems, showing unprecedented universality beyond the scaling laws. We investigate growing interfaces of liquid-crystal turbulence and find not only universal scaling, but universal distributions of interface positions. They obey the largest-eigenvalue distributions of random matrices and depend on whether the interface is curved or flat, albeit universal in each case. Our exact solution of the KPZ equation provides theoretical explanations.

The 1+1-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation and its universality class

We explain the exact solution of the 1+1 dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with sharp wedge initial conditions. Thereby it is confirmed that the continuum model belongs to the KPZ universality class, not only as regards to scaling exponents but also as regards to the full probability distribution of the height in the long time limit.

Current moments of 1D ASEP by duality

We consider the exponential moments of integrated currents of 1D asymmetric simple exclusion process using the duality found by Schütz. For the ASEP on the infinite lattice we show that the $n$th moment is reduced to the problem of the ASEP with less than or equal to $n$ particles.

The one-dimensional KPZ equation: an exact solution and its universality

We report on the first exact solution of the KPZ equation in one dimension, with an initial condition which physically corresponds to the motion of a macroscopically curved height profile. The solution provides a determinantal formula for the probability distribution function of the height $h(x,t)$ for all $t>0$. In particular, we show that for large $t$, on the scale $t^{1/3}$, the statistics is given by the Tracy-Widom distribution, known already from the theory of GUE random matrices. Our solution confirms that the KPZ equation describes the interface motion in the regime of weak driving force. Within this regime the KPZ equation details how the long time asymptotics is approached.

The crossover regime for the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process

We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process in one dimension with weak asymmetry (WASEP) and 0-1 step initial condition. Our interest are the fluctuations of the time-integrated particle current at some prescribed spatial location. One expects a crossover from Gaussian to Tracy-Widom distributed fluctuations. The appropriate crossover scale is an asymmetry of order $ε^{-1/2}$, times of order $ε^{-2}$, and a spatial location of order $ε^{-3/2}$. For this parameter window we obtain the limiting distribution function of the integrated current in terms of an integral over the difference of two Fredholm determinants. For large times, on the scale $ε^{-2}$, this distribution function converges to the one of Tracy-Widom.

Exact height distributions for the KPZ equation with narrow wedge initial condition

We consider the KPZ equation in one space dimension with narrow wedge initial condition, $h(x,t=0)=- |x|/δ$, $δ\ll 1$. Based on previous results for the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process with step initial conditions, we obtain a determinantal formula for the one-point distribution of the solution $h(x,t)$ valid for any $x$ and $t>0$. The corresponding distribution function converges in the long time limit, $t\to\infty$, to the Tracy-Widom distribution. The first order correction is a shift of order $t^{-1/3}$. We provide numerical computations based on the exact formula.

Two speed TASEP

We consider the TASEP on Z with two blocks of particles having different jump rates. We study the large time behavior of particles' positions. It depends both on the jump rates and the region we focus on, and we determine the complete process diagram. In particular, we discover a new transition process in the region where the influence of the random and deterministic parts of the initial condition interact. Slow particles may create a shock, where the particle density is discontinuous and the distribution of a particle's position is asymptotically singular. We determine the diffusion coefficient of the shock without using second class particles. We also analyze the case where particles are effectively blocked by a wall moving with speed equal to their intrinsic jump rate.

Superdiffusivity of the 1D lattice Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

The continuum Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in one dimension is lattice discretized in such a way that the drift part is divergence free. This allows to determine explicitly the stationary measures. We map the lattice KPZ equation to a bosonic field theory which has a cubic anti-hermitian nonlinearity. Thereby it is established that the stationary two-point function spreads superdiffusively.
