Vector chirality and inhomogeneous magnetization in frustrated spin tubes in high magnetic fields

The low-energy physics of three-leg frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-S tubes in the vicinity of the upper critical field are studied. Utilizing the effective field theory based on the spin-wave approximation, we argue that in the intermediate-interchain-coupling regime, the ground state exhibits a vector chiral order or an inhomogeneous magnetization for the interchain (rung) direction and the low-energy excitations are described by a one-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). In both chiral and inhomogeneous phases, the Z_2 parity symmetry along the rung direction is spontaneously broken. It is also predicted that a two-component TLL appears and all the symmetries are restored in the strong-rung-coupling case.

Quantum phase transitions of spin chiral nanotubes

Recently many interesting magnetic nanostructures have been fabricated and much attention is arising on the rich magnetic properties that originate in the quantum effects eminent in the nanoscale world. One of the peculiar aspects of the quantum effects is the spin excitation gap. In the spin-1/2 low-dimensional systems, the spin gap often appears when the lattice dimerization or the frustration in the spin-spin interaction are introduced. In the present study, we investigate the ground-state property of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chiral nanotubes with the spatial modulation in the spin-spin interaction. The ground-state phase diagrams of them are determined by observing the behavior of the expectation value of the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis slow-twist operator calculated by the quantum Monte Carlo method with the continuous-time loop algorithm. We discuss the relation between the characteristic of the topology of the phase diagram and the chiral vector of the nanotubes.

Re-Entrant Quantum Phase Transitions in Antiferromagnetic Spin-1 Ladders

In response to recent chemical attempts to construct higher-spin ladder materials from organic polyradicals, we study the ground-state properties of a wide class of antiferromagnetic spin-1 ladders. Employing various numerical tools, we reveal the rich phase diagram and correct a preceding nonlinear-sigma-model prediction. A variational analysis well interprets the phase competition with particular emphasis on the {\it re-entrant phase boundary} as a function of the rung interaction.

Quantum magnetization plateaux of an anisotropic ferrimagnetic spin chain

The magnetization curve of the $(S,s)=(1,1/2)$ ferrimagnetic alternating spin chain with the single-ion anisotropy $D$ is investigated with the numerical exact diagonalization of finite clusters and size-scaling analyses. The system has a plateau at 1/3 of the saturation moment, which corresponds to the spontaneous magnetization for D=0. Varying $D$ in the 1/3-magnetized ground state under the external field along the axis of $D$, a quantum phase transition is revealed to occur at the critical value $D/J=1.114 \pm 0.001$ where the plateau vanishes. Except for the critical point, the plateau is always opening, but the mechanism is different between $D D_c$. The change of mechanisms is an evidence to clarify that the plateau originates from the quantization of magnetization.

Magnetization Plateau in the S=1 Spin Ladder with Competing Interactions

Very recently a non-trivial magnetization plateau at 1/4 of the saturation magnetization was observed in the S=1 spin ladder BIP-TENO. In our previous work we proposed a possible mechanism of the plateau based on the second- and third-neighbor exchange couplings which lead to frustration. In order to confirm the realization of the mechanism, we compare the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and some critical magnetic fields obtained by the numerical calculation for the proposed model with the experimental results.

Low-Temperature Properties of Quasi-One-Dimensional Molecule-Based Ferromagnets

Quantum and thermal behaviors of low-dimensional mixed-spin systems are investigated with particular emphasis on the design of molecule-based ferromagnets. One can obtain a molecular ferromagnet by assembling molecular bricks so as to construct a low-dimensional system with a magnetic ground state and then coupling the chains or the layers again in a ferromagnetic fashion. Two of thus-constructed quasi-one-dimensional bimetallic compounds are qualitatively viewed within the spin-wave treatment, one of which successfully grows into a bulk magnet, while the other of which ends in a singlet ground state. Then, concentrating on the ferrimagnetic arrangement on a two-leg ladder which is well indicative of general coupled-chain ferrimagnets, we develop the spin-wave theory and fully reveal its low-energy structure. We inquire further into the ferromagnetic aspect of the ferrimagnetic ladder numerically calculating the sublattice magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility. There exists a moderate coupling strength between the chains in order to obtain the most ferromagnetic ferrimagnet.

Stripes due to the next-nearest neighbor exchange in high-Tc cuprates

We propose a possible mechanism of the charge stripe order due to the next-nearest neighbor exchange interaction J' in the two-dimensional t-J model, based on the concept of the phase separation. We also calculate some hole correlation functions of the finite cluster of the model using the numerical diagonalization, to examine the realization of the mechanism. It is also found that the next-nearest neighbor hopping t' suppresses the stripe order induced by the present mechanism for t'<0, while it enhances for t'>0.

Coexistent quantum and classical aspects of magnetization plateaux in alternating-spin chains

Magnetization process of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains of alternating spins are theoretically studied. The size scaling analysis with the exact diagonalization of finite systems for ($S$,$s$)=(3/2,1) and (2,1) indicates a multi-plateau structure in the ground-state magnetization curve for $S$ and $s$ $>1/2$. The first plateau at the spontaneous magnetization can be explained by a classical origin, that is the Ising gap. In contrast, the second or higher one must be originated to the quantization of the magnetization. It is also found that all the $2s$ plateaux, including the classical and quantum ones, appear even in the isotropic case with no bond alternation.

Pseudogap Induced Antiferromagnetic Spin Correlation in High-Temperature Superconductors

The pseudogap phenomena observed on cuprate high temperature superconductors are investigated based on the exact diagonalization method on the finite cluster t-J model. The results show the presence of the gap-like behavior in the temperature dependence of various magnetic properties; the NMR relaxation rate, the neutron scattering intensity and the static susceptibility. The calculated spin correlation function indicates that the pseudogap behavior arises associated with the development of the antiferromagnetic spin correlation with decreasing the temperature. The numerical results are presented to clarify the model parameter dependence, that covers the realistic experimental situation. The effect of the next-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$ is also studied.

An Electron Spin Resonance Selection Rule for Spin-Gapped Systems

The direct electron spin resonance (ESR) absorption between a singlet ground state and the triplet excited states of spin gap systems is investigated. Such an absorption, which is forbidden by the conservation of the total spin quantum number in isotropic Hamiltonians, is allowed by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We show a selection rule in the presence of this interaction, using the exact numerical diagonalization of the finite cluster of the quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating spin system. The selection rule is also modified into a suitable form in order to interpret recent experimental results on CuGeO$_3$ and NaV$_2$O$_5$.

Field-Induced Gaps in the Frustrated Spin Ladder

We study the magnetization process of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic spin ladder in the presence of the second and the third-neighbor couplings which lead to frustration with the typical nearest-neighbor coupling. We use degenerate perturbation theory and level spectroscopy analysis of the numerical diagonalization data of the Hamiltonian for finite systems. We find two kinds of plateaux at half the saturation moment in the magnetization curve. One is mainly due to the second-neighbor couplings and the other to the third-neighbor couplings. The mechanisms of these two plateaux are quite different with each other.

Field-induced long-range order in the S=1 antiferromagnetic chain

The quasi-one dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet in magnetic field H is investigated with the exact diagonalization of finite chains and the mean field approximation for the interchain interaction. In the presence of the single-ion anisotropy D, the full phase diagram in the $HT$ plane is presented for H \parallel D and H \perp D. The shape of the field-induced long-range ordered phase is revealed to be quite different between the two cases, as observed in the recent experiment of NDMAP. The estimated ratio of the interchain and intrachain couplings of NDMAP (J'/J ~ 10^{-3}) is consistent with the neutron scattering measurement.

Multi-plateau magnetization curves of one-dimensional Heisenberg ferrimagnets

Ground-state magnetization curves of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains of alternating spins $S$ and $s$ are numerically investigated. Calculating several cases of $(S,s)$, we conclude that the spin-$(S,s)$ chain generally exhibits $2s$ magnetization plateaux even at the most symmetric point. In the double- or more-plateau structure, the initial plateau is generated on a classical basis, whereas the higher ones are based on a quantum mechanism.

Magnetic properties of frustrated spin ladder

The magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic spin ladder with the next-nearest neighbor interaction, particularly under external field, are investigated by the exact diagonalization of the finite clusters and size scaling techniques. It is found that there exist two phases, the rung-dimer and rung-triplet phases, not only in the nonmagnetic ground state but also magnetized one, where the phase boundary has a small magnetization dependence. Only in the former phase, the magnetization curve is revealed to have a possible plateau at half the saturation moment, with a sufficient frustration.

Characterization of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains according to the constituent spins

The low-energy structure and the thermodynamic properties of ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chains of alternating spins $S$ and $s$ are investigated by the use of numerical tools as well as the spin-wave theory. The elementary excitations are calculated through an efficient quantum Monte Carlo technique featuring imaginary-time correlation functions and are characterized in terms of interacting spin waves. The thermal behavior is analyzed with particular emphasis on its ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic dual aspect. The extensive numerical and analytic calculations lead to the classification of the one-dimensional ferrimagnetic behavior according to the constituent spins: the ferromagnetic ($S>2s$), antiferromagnetic ($S<2s$), and balanced ($S=2s$) ferrimagnetism.

Magnetization Plateau in the Frustrated Spin Ladder

The magnetization process of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin ladder at T=0 is studied by the exact diagonalization of finite clusters and size scaling analyses. It is found that a magnetization plateau appears at half the saturation value (m=1/2) in the presence of a sufficiently large next-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction to yield the frustration, when the rung coupling is larger than the leg one. The phase diagram at m=1/2 is given by the analysis based on the conformal invariance. The magnetization curves are also presented in several cases.

Breakdown of a Magnetization Plateau due to Anisotropy in Heisenberg Mixed-Spin Chains

We discuss the critical behavior of the spin-(1,1/2) Heisenberg ferrimagnetic chain in a magnetic field, whose magnetization curve exhibits a plateau at a third of the full magnetization. A bond alternation stabilizes the massive state, whereas an exchange anisotropy causes the breakdown of the plateau and the onset of a gapless spin-fluid state, where the transition, lying in the XY but ferromagnetic region, is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type. In order to elucidate significant quantum effects, we investigate the model of classical version as well.

Critical Behavior of Anisotropic Heisenberg Mixed-Spin Chains in a Field

We numerically investigate the critical behavior of the spin-(1,1/2) Heisenberg ferrimagnet with anisotropic exchange coupling in a magnetic field. A quantized magnetization plateau as a function of the field, appearing at a third of the saturated magnetization, is stable over whole the antiferromagnetic coupling region. The plateau vanishes in the ferromagnetic coupling region via the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Comparing the quantum and classical magnetization curves, we elucidate what are essential quantum effects.
