Hunting for a scalar glueball in exclusive B decays

Using flavor SU(3) symmetry for the light quarks validated by the available experimental data, we propose an intuitive way to hunt for a scalar glueball in B decays. In the presence of mixing between the glueball and ordinary scalar mesons, we explore the extraction of the mixing parameters. In particular, we discuss the implication from the recently available experimental data and show the sensitivities of B decays as a probe to the scalar structures. The future Super KEKB factory would allow access to establishing the mixing pattern among the scalars, and possibly allow one to disentangle the long-standing puzzle concerning the existence and mixings of the scalar glueball predicted by QCD.

Roy-Steiner equations for pi N scattering

Starting from hyperbolic dispersion relations for the invariant amplitudes of pion-nucleon scattering together with crossing symmetry and unitarity, one can derive a closed system of integral equations for the partial waves of both the s-channel (pi N --> pi N) and the t-channel (pi pi --> Nbar N) reaction, called Roy-Steiner equations. After giving a brief overview of the Roy-Steiner system for pi N scattering, we demonstrate that the solution of the t-channel subsystem, which represents the first step in solving the full system, can be achieved by means of Muskhelishvili-Omnès techniques. In particular, we present results for the P-waves featuring in the dispersive analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon.

Baryon electric dipole moments from strong CP violation

The electric dipole form factors and moments of the ground state baryons are calculated in chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. We show that the baryon electric dipole form factors at this order depend only on two combinations of low-energy constants. We also derive various relations that are free of unknown low-energy constants. We use recent lattice QCD data to calculate all baryon EDMs. In particular, we find d_n = -2.9\pm 0.9 and d_p = 1.1\pm 1.1 in units of 10^{-16} e θ_0 cm. Finite volume corrections to the moments are also worked out. We show that for a precision extraction from lattice QCD data, the next-to-leading order terms have to be accounted for.

Structure and rotations of the Hoyle state

The excited state of the 12C nucleus known as the "Hoyle state" constitutes one of the most interesting, difficult and timely challenges in nuclear physics, as it plays a key role in the production of carbon via fusion of three alpha particles in red giant stars. In this letter, we present ab initio lattice calculations which unravel the structure of the Hoyle state, along with evidence for a low-lying spin-2 rotational excitation. For the 12C ground state and the first excited spin-2 state, we find a compact triangular configuration of alpha clusters. For the Hoyle state and the second excited spin-2 state, we find a "bent-arm" or obtuse triangular configuration of alpha clusters. We also calculate the electromagnetic transition rates between the low-lying states of 12C.

Improved dispersive analysis of the scalar form factor of the nucleon

We present a coupled system of integral equations for the pi pi --> Nbar N and Kbar K --> Nbar N S-waves derived from Roy-Steiner equations for pion-nucleon scattering. We discuss the solution of the corresponding two-channel Muskhelishvili-Omnes problem and apply the results to a dispersive analysis of the scalar form factor of the nucleon fully including Kbar K intermediate states. In particular, we determine the corrections Delta_sigma and Delta_D, which are needed for the extraction of the pion-nucleon sigma term from pi N scattering, and show that the difference Delta_D - Delta_sigma=(-1.8 +/- 0.2) MeV is insensitive to the input pi N parameters.

The size of the proton - closing in on the radius puzzle

We analyze the recent electron-proton scattering data from Mainz using a dispersive framework that respects the constraints from analyticity and unitarity on the nucleon structure. We also perform a continued fraction analysis of these data. We find a small electric proton charge radius, r_E^p = 0.84_{-0.01}^{+0.01} fm, consistent with the recent determination from muonic hydrogen measurements and earlier dispersive analyses. We also extract the proton magnetic radius, r_M^p = 0.86_{-0.03}^{+0.02} fm, consistent with earlier determinations based on dispersion relations.

The proton-antiproton mass threshold structure in psi(3686) radiative decay revisited

The near-threshold behavior of the ppbar invariant mass spectrum from the psi(3686) -> gamma ppbar decay reported recently by the BESIII Collaboration is analyzed. The enhancement in the ppbar invariant mass spectrum near threshold is nicely reproduced by the ppbar final-state interaction based on the isospin averaged 1S0 partial-wave amplitude as predicted by the Julich nucleon--antinucleon model. Contributions from the f_2(1910) or f_2(1950) mesons, as promoted in earlier works, are not needed.

Where is the χ_{c0}(2P)?

Although the analysis of the BaBar Collaboration prefers J^P=0^+ for the X(3915), it is difficult to assign the X(3915) to the χ_{c0}(2P). We show that there is an indication of the χ_{c0}(2P) with a mass around 3840 MeV and width of about 200 MeV in the Belle and BaBar data for γγ--> D\bar D.

Light quark mass dependence in heavy quarkonium physics

The issue of chiral extrapolations in heavy quarkonium systems is discussed. We show that the light quark mass dependence of the properties of heavy quarkonia is not always suppressed. For quarkonia close to an open flavor threshold, even a nonanalytic chiral extrapolation is needed. Both these nontrivial facts are demonstrated to appear in the decay widths of the hindered M1 transitions between the first radially excited and ground state P-wave charmonia. The results at a pion mass of about 500 MeV could deviate from the value at the physical pion mass by a factor of two. Our findings show the necessity of performing chiral extrapolations for lattice simulations of heavy quarkonium systems.

Resonance properties from the finite-volume energy spectrum

A new method based on the concept of probability distribution is proposed to analyze the finite volume energy spectrum in lattice QCD. Using synthetic lattice data, we demonstrate that for the channel with quantum numbers of the Delta-resonance a clear resonance structure emerges in such an analysis. Consequently, measuring the volume-dependence of the energy levels in lattice QCD will allow to determine the mass and the width of the Delta with reasonable accuracy.

Benchmark calculations for elastic fermion-dimer scattering

We present continuum and lattice calculations for elastic scattering between a fermion and a bound dimer in the shallow binding limit. For the continuum calculation we use the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian (STM) integral equation to determine the scattering length and effective range parameter to high precision. For the lattice calculation we use the finite-volume method of Lüscher. We take into account topological finite-volume corrections to the dimer binding energy which depend on the momentum of the dimer. After subtracting these effects, we find from the lattice calculation kappa a_fd = 1.174(9) and kappa r_fd = -0.029(13). These results agree well with the continuum values kappa a_fd = 1.17907(1) and kappa r_fd = -0.0383(3) obtained from the STM equation. We discuss applications to cold atomic Fermi gases, deuteron-neutron scattering in the spin-quartet channel, and lattice calculations of scattering for nuclei and hadronic molecules at finite volume.

New insights into antikaon-nucleon scattering and the structure of the Lambda(1405)

We perform a combined analysis of antikaon-nucleon scattering cross sections and the recent SIDDHARTA kaonic hydrogen data in the framework of a coupled-channel Bethe-Salpeter approach at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion of the effective potential. We find a precise description of the antikaon-proton scattering amplitudes and are able to extract accurate values of the scattering lengths, a0=-1.81^+0.30_-0.28 + i 0.92^+0.29_-0.23 fm, a1=+0.48^+0.12_-0.11 + i 0.87^+0.26_-0.20 fm. We also discuss the two-pole structure of the Lambda(1405).

Examining coupled-channel effects in radiative charmonium transitions

Coupled-channel effects due to coupling of charmonia to the charmed and anticharmed mesons are of current interest in heavy quarkonium physics. However, the effects have not been unambiguously established. In this paper, a clean method is proposed in order to examine the coupled-channel effects in charmonium transitions. We show that the hindered M1 radiative transitions from the 2P to 1P charmonia are suitable for this purpose. We suggest to measure one or more of the ratios Gamma(h_c'-->chi_{cJ} gamma)/Gamma(chi_{cJ}'-->chi_{cJ} pi^0) and Gamma(chi_{cJ}'-->h_c gamma)/Gamma(chi_{cJ}'-->chi_{cJ} pi^0), for which highly nontrivial and parameter-free predictions are given. The picture can also be tested using both unquenched and quenched lattice calculations.

Chiral dynamics of few- and many-nucleon systems

This review gives a brief introduction to the chiral effective field theory of nuclear forces and atomic nuclei. We discuss the status of the nuclear Hamiltonian derived in this framework and some recent applications in few-nucleon systems. Nuclear lattice simulations as a new tool to address the many-body problem are introduced and some first results based on that method are presented.

Topological phases for bound states moving in a finite volume

We show that bound states moving in a finite periodic volume have an energy correction which is topological in origin and universal in character. The topological volume corrections contain information about the number and mass of the constituents of the bound states. These results have broad applications to lattice calculations involving nucleons, nuclei, hadronic molecules, and cold atoms. We illustrate and verify the analytical results with several numerical lattice calculations.

Bound state nature of the exotic Z_b states

The assumption that the newly observed charged bottomonia states Z_b(10610) and Z_b(10650) are of molecular nature is confronted with the measured invariant mass distributions for the transitions of the Upsilon(5S) to the final states h_b pi^+ pi^- and h_b(2P) pi^+ pi^-. It is shown that the assumption that the Z_b(10610) and Z_b(10650) are B\bar B^*+{\rm c.c.} and B^*\bar B^* bound states, respectively, with very small binding energies is consistent with the data. The calculation is based on a power counting for bottom meson loops, which is explicitly given up to two-loop in the framework of a nonrelativistic effective field theory. We also show that if the Z_b states are of molecular nature, then the data should not be analyzed by using a Breit-Wigner parametrization.

To bind or not to bind: The H-dibaryon in light of chiral effective field theory

We analyse the quark mass dependence of the binding energy of the H-dibaryon in the framework of chiral effective field theory. We show that the SU(3) breaking effects induced by the differences of the pertinent two-baryon thresholds (Lambda-Lambda, Xi-N, Sigma-Sigma) have a very pronounced impact that need to be incorporated properly in future lattice QCD simulations. We also point out that if the H-dibaryon is a two-baryon bound state, its dominant component is Xi-N rather than Lambda-Lambda, which is a consequence of the approximate SU(3) flavor symmetry of the two-baryon interactions.
