More kaonic bound states and a comprehensive interpretation of the D_{sJ} states

The leading order interaction between a Goldstone boson and a matter field is universally dominated by the Weinberg-Tomozawa term. Based on this observation, we predict a rich spectrum of bound states of a kaon and a heavy meson. We argue that if the lifetime of an excited heavy meson is significantly longer than the range of forces, then the finite width of that state can be neglected in a first approximation. Then, the D_{s0}^*(2317), D_{s1}(2460), D_{sJ}(2860) and D_{sJ}(3040) are generated as DK, D^*K, D_1(2420)K and D^*(2600)K bound states, respectively. In addition to the remarkable agreement with the measured masses, the decay patterns of the D_{sJ}(2860) and D_{sJ}(3040) can also be understood. Two more D_{sJ} states, and kaonic bound states with the bottom mesons as well as the doubly charmed baryon are also predicted.

Precision benchmark calculations for four particles at unitarity

The unitarity limit describes interacting particles where the range of the interaction is zero and the scattering length is infinite. We present precision benchmark calculations for two-component fermions at unitarity using three different ab initio methods: Hamiltonian lattice formalism using iterated eigenvector methods, Euclidean lattice formalism with auxiliary-field projection Monte Carlo, and continuum diffusion Monte Carlo with fixed and released nodes. We have calculated the ground state energy of the unpolarized four-particle system in a periodic cube as a dimensionless fraction of the ground state energy for the non-interacting system. We obtain values 0.211(2) and 0.210(2) using two different Hamiltonian lattice representations, 0.206(9) using Euclidean lattice, and an upper bound of 0.212(2) from fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo. Released-node calculations starting from the fixed-node result yield a decrease of less than 0.002 over a propagation of 0.4/E_F in Euclidean time, where E_F is the Fermi energy. We find good agreement among all three ab initio methods.

Neutral pion photoproduction off 3H and 3He in chiral perturbation theory

We calculate electromagnetic neutral pion production off three-nucleon bound states (3H, 3He) at threshold to leading one-loop order in the framework of chiral nuclear effective field theory. In addition, we analyze the dependence of the nuclear S-wave amplitude E_{0+} on the elementary neutron amplitude E_{0+}^{pi0 n} which in the case of 3He provides a stringent test of the prediction based on chiral perturbation theory. Uncertainties from higher order corrections are estimated.

Ab initio calculation of the Hoyle state

The Hoyle state plays a crucial role in the hydrogen burning of stars heavier than our sun and in the production of carbon and other elements necessary for life. This excited state of the carbon-12 nucleus was postulated by Hoyle [1] as a necessary ingredient for the fusion of three alpha particles to produce carbon at stellar temperatures. Although the Hoyle state was seen experimentally more than a half century ago [2,3], nuclear theorists have not yet uncovered the nature of this state from first principles. In this letter we report the first ab initio calculation of the low-lying states of carbon-12 using supercomputer lattice simulations and a theoretical framework known as effective field theory. In addition to the ground state and excited spin-2 state, we find a resonance at -85(3) MeV with all of the properties of the Hoyle state and in agreement with the experimentally observed energy. These lattice simulations provide insight into the structure of this unique state and new clues as to the amount of fine-tuning needed in nature for the production of carbon in stars.

Effect of charmed meson loops on charmonium transitions

The effects of intermediate charmed mesons on charmonium transitions with the emission of one pion or eta are studied systematically. Based on a non-relativistic effective field theory we show that charmed meson loops are enhanced compared to the corresponding tree-level contributions for transitions between two S-wave charmonia as well as for transitions between two P-wave charmonia. On the contrary, for the transitions between one S-wave and one P-wave charmonium state, the loops need to be analyzed case by case and often appear to be suppressed. The relation to and possible implications for an effective Lagrangian approach are also discussed. This study at the same time provides a cross check for the numerical evaluations.

Isospin splittings of doubly heavy baryons

The SELEX Collaboration has reported a very large isospin splitting of doubly charmed baryons. We show that this effect would imply that the doubly charmed baryons are very compact. One intriguing possibility is that such baryons have a linear geometry Q-q-Q where the light quark q oscillates between the two heavy quarks Q, analogous to a linear molecule such as carbon dioxide. However, using conventional arguments, the size of a heavy-light hadron is expected to be around 0.5 fm, much larger than the size needed to explain the observed large isospin splitting. Assuming the distance between two heavy quarks is much smaller than that between the light quark and a heavy one, the doubly heavy baryons are related to the heavy mesons via heavy quark-diquark symmetry. Based on this symmetry, we predict the isospin splittings for doubly heavy baryons including Xi_{cc}, Xi_{bb} and Xi_{bc}. The prediction for the Xi_{cc} is much smaller than the SELEX value. On the other hand, the Xi_{bb} baryons are predicted to have an isospin splitting as large as (6.3\pm1.7) MeV. An experimental study of doubly bottomed baryons is therefore very important to better understand the structure of baryons with heavy quarks.

The Beauty of Spin

I review recent developments in theoretical spin physics. Topics include pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions, the implications of heavy quark spin symmetry for heavy hadron molecules, the nucleon electric dipole form factors and ab initio calculations of the width of hadron resonances. A few spin physics high-lights from experiments at the COSY accelerator are also discussed.

Extracting the light quark mass ratio m_u/m_d from bottomonia transitions

We propose a new method to extract the light quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d$ using the $Υ(4S)\to h_bπ^0(η)$ bottomonia transitions. The decay amplitudes are dominated by the light quark mass differences, and the corrections from other effects are rather small, allowing for a precise extraction. We also discuss how to reduce the theoretical uncertainty with the help of future experiments. As a by-product, we show that the decay $Υ(4S)\to h_bη$ is expected to be a nice channel for searching for the $h_b$ state.

Evaluation of the polarization observables I^S and I^C in the reaction gamma p --> pi^0 eta p

We evaluate the polarization observables I^S and I^C for the reaction gamma p --> pi^0 eta p, using a chiral unitary framework developed earlier. The I^S and I^C observables have been recently measured for the first time by the CBELSA/TAPS collaboration. The theoretical predictions of I^S and I^C, given for altogether 18 angle dependent functions, are in good agreement with the measurements. Also, the asymmetry dSigma/dcos(theta) evaluated here agrees with the data. We show the importance of the Delta(1700)D33 resonance and its S-wave decay into eta Delta(1232). The result can be considered as a further confirmation of the dynamical nature of this resonance. At the highest energies, deviations of the predictions from the data start to become noticeable, which leaves room for additional processes and resonances such as a Delta(1940)D33. We also point out how to further improve the calculation.

Light meson mass dependence of the positive parity heavy-strange mesons

We calculate the masses of the resonances D_{s0}^*(2317) and D_{s1}(2460) as well as their bottom partners as bound states of a kaon and a D^*- and B^*-meson, respectively, in unitarized chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. After fixing the parameters in the D_{s0}^*(2317) channel, the calculated mass for the D_{s1}(2460) is found in excellent agreement with experiment. The masses for the analogous states with a bottom quark are predicted to be M_{B^*_{s0}}=(5696\pm 40) MeV and M_{B_{s1}}=(5742\pm 40) MeV in reasonable agreement with previous analyses. In particular, we predict M_{B_{s1}}-M_{B_{s0}^*}=46\pm 1 MeV. We also explore the dependence of the states on the pion and kaon masses. We argue that the kaon mass dependence of a kaonic bound state should be almost linear with slope about unity. Such a dependence is specific to the assumed molecular nature of the states. We suggest to extract the kaon mass dependence of these states from lattice QCD calculations.

DN interaction from meson exchange

A model of the DN interaction is presented which is developed in close analogy to the meson-exchange KbarN potential of the Juelich group utilizing SU(4) symmetry constraints. The main ingredients of the interaction are provided by vector meson (rho, omega) exchange and higher-order box diagrams involving D*N, DΔ, and D*Δintermediate states. The coupling of DN to the pi-Lambda_c and pi-Sigma_c channels is taken into account. The interaction model generates the Lambda_c(2595) resonance dynamically as a DN quasi-bound state. Results for DN total and differential cross sections are presented and compared with predictions of an interaction model that is based on the leading-order Weinberg-Tomozawa term. Some features of the Lambda_c(2595) resonance are discussed and the role of the near-by pi-Sigma_c threshold is emphasized. Selected predictions of the orginal KbarN model are reported too. Specifically, it is pointed out that the model generates two poles in the partial wave corresponding to the Lambda(1405) resonance.

Novel analysis of the decays psi' -> h_c pi^0 and eta_c'-> chi_{c0} pi^0

We show that in the transitions psi' -> h_c π^0 and eta_c' -> chi_{c0} pi^0 the contributions from charmed meson loops are highly suppressed, in contrast to various other charmonium decays. We calculate the width of the psi' -> h_c pi^0, which agrees with the recent BES-III data, and predict the width of the eta_c' -> chi_{c0} pi^0, Γ(eta_c' -> chi_{c0} pi^0) = 1.5\pm0.4 keV. A confirmation of this prediction would also provide additional support for a recent analysis of psi' -> J/psi pi^0 (eta), where loops are claimed to play a prominent role.

Extraction of the resonance parameters at finite times

In this paper we propose a model-independent method to extract the resonance parameters on the lattice directly from the Euclidean 2-point correlation functions of the field operators at finite times. The method is tested in case of the two-point function of the Delta-resonance, calculated at one loop in Small Scale Expansion. Further, the method is applied to a 1+1-dimensional model with two coupled Ising spins and the results are compared with earlier ones obtained by using Luescher's approach.

Reconciling the X(4630) with the Y(4660)

The Belle Collaboration observed an enhancement called X(4630) in the Lambda_c^+ Lambda_c^- mass distribution using initial state radiation. We demonstrate that the enhancement could be consistent with the psi'f_0(980) molecular picture of the Y(4660) taking into account the Lambda_c^+ Lambda_c^- final state interaction. To test the hypothesis that the X(4630) and Y(4660) are the same molecular state, we give predictions for its spin partner, the eta_c'f_0(980) molecule. High statistic measurements of the B decays into the K Lambda_c^+ Lambda_c^- and K eta_c' pi^+ pi^- are strongly recommended.
