Extraction of the light quark mass ratio from the decays psi' --> J/psi pi^0 (eta)

Light quark masses are important fundamental parameters of the Standard Model. The decays psi'-->J/psi pi^0 (eta) were widely used in determining the light quark mass ratio m_u/m_d. However, there is a large discrepancy between the resulting value of m_u/m_d and the one determined from the light pseudoscalar meson masses. Using the technique of non-relativistic effective field theory, we show that intermediate charmed meson loops lead to a sizeable contribution to the decays and hence make the psi'-->J/psi pi^0 (eta) decays not suitable for a precise extraction of the light quark mass ratio.

Neutron-Proton Mass Difference in Nuclear Matter and in Finite Nuclei and the Nolen-Schiffer Anomaly

The neutron-proton mass difference in (isospin asymmetric) nuclear matter and finite nuclei is studied in the framework of a medium-modified Skyrme model. The proposed effective Lagrangian incorporates both the medium influence of the surrounding nuclear environment on the single nucleon properties and an explicit isospin-breaking effect in the mesonic sector. Energy-dependent charged and neutral pion optical potentials in the s- and p-wave channels are included as well. The present approach predicts that the neutron-proton mass difference is mainly dictated by its strong part and that it markedly decreases in neutron matter. Furthermore, the possible interplay between the effective nucleon mass in finite nuclei and the Nolen-Schiffer anomaly is discussed. In particular, we find that a correct description of the properties of mirror nuclei leads to a stringent restriction of possible modifications of the nucleon's effective mass in nuclei.

Isospin violation in low-energy pion-nucleon scattering revisited

We calculate isospin breaking in pion-nucleon scattering in the threshold region in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. All effects due to quark mass differences as well as real and virtual photons are consistently included. As an application, we discuss the energy dependence of the triangle relation that connects elastic scattering on the proton pi+- p --> pi+- p with the charge exchange reaction pi- p --> pi0 n.

Aspects of meson-baryon scattering in three- and two-flavor chiral perturbation theory

We analyze meson-baryon scattering lengths in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at leading one-loop order. We compute the complete set of matching relations between the dimension-two low-energy constants in the two- and three-flavor formulations of the theory. We derive new two-flavor low-energy theorems for pion-hyperon and pion-cascade scattering that can be tested in lattice simulations.

Isospin-breaking corrections to the pion-nucleon scattering lengths

We analyze isospin breaking through quark mass differences and virtual photons in the pion-nucleon scattering lengths in all physical channels in the framework of covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. The so-called triangle relation is found to be violated by about 1.5 %. We encounter a substantial isospin-breaking correction to neutral-pion-nucleon scattering beyond Weinberg's prediction due to a cusp effect. Finally, the application to hadronic atoms is briefly discussed.

Electromagnetic effects in eta --> 3 pi

We re-evaluate the electromagnetic corrections to eta --> 3 pi decays at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, arguing that effects of order e^2(m_d-m_u) disregarded so far are not negligible compared to other contributions of order e^2 times a light quark mass. Despite the appearance of the Coulomb pole in eta --> pi+ pi- pi0 and cusps in eta --> 3 pi0, the overall corrections remain small.

Searching for signatures around 1920 MeV of a $N^*$ state of three hadron nature

We provide a series of arguments which support the idea that the peak seen in the $γp \to K^+ Λ$ reaction around 1920 MeV should correspond to the recently predicted state of $J^P=1/2^+$ as a bound state of $K \bar{K}N$ with a mixture of $a_0(980)N$ and $f_0(980)N$ components. At the same time we propose polarization experiments in that reaction as a further test of the prediction, as well as a study of the total cross section for $γp \to K^+ K^- p$ at energies close to threshold and of $d σ/d M_{inv}$ for invariant masses close to the two kaon threshold.

A method to measure the antikaon-nucleon scattering length in lattice QCD

We propose a method to determine the isoscalar \bar K N scattering length on the lattice. Our method represents the generalization of Lüscher's approach in the presence of inelastic channels (complex scattering length). In addition, the proposed approach allows one to find the position of the S-matrix pole corresponding the the Lambda(1405) resonance.

Implications of heavy quark spin symmetry on heavy meson hadronic molecules

In recent years, many heavy mesons and charmonia were observed which do not fit in the conventional quark model expectations. Some of them are proposed to be hadronic molecules. Here we investigate the consequences of heavy quark spin symmetry on these heavy meson hadronic molecules. Heavy quark spin symmetry enables us to predict new heavy meson molecules and provides us with a method to test heavy meson molecule assumptions of some newly observed states. In particular, we predict an η_c'f_0(980) bound state as the spin-doublet partner of the Y(4660) proposed as a ψ'f_0(980) bound state with a mass of 4616^{+5}_{-6} MeV and the prominent decay mode η_c'ππ. The width is predicted to be Γ(η_c'ππ)=60\pm30 MeV. The pi^+π^- invariant mass spectrum and the line shape are calculated. We suggest to search for this state in B^{\pm}-->η_c'K^{\pm}π^+π^-, whose branching fraction is expected to be large.

Interactions between heavy mesons and Goldstone bosons from chiral dynamics

We calculate the S-wave scattering lengths for charmed mesons scattering off Goldstone bosons and explore their quark mass dependence using chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order as well as a unitarized version of it. The quark mass dependence of all scattering lengths determined in a recent lattice calculation can be reproduced by the unitarized version. We also discuss signals of possible bound states in these observables.

Ground state energy of dilute neutron matter at next-to-leading order in lattice chiral effective field theory

We present lattice calculations for the ground state energy of dilute neutron matter at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. This study follows a series of recent papers on low-energy nuclear physics using chiral effective field theory on the lattice. In this work we introduce an improved spin- and isospin-projected leading-order action which allows for a perturbative treatment of corrections at next-to-leading order and smaller estimated errors. Using auxiliary fields and Euclidean-time projection Monte Carlo, we compute the ground state of 8, 12, and 16 neutrons in a periodic cube, covering a density range from 2% to 10% of normal nuclear density.

Lattice chiral effective field theory with three-body interactions at next-to-next-to-leading order

We consider low-energy nucleons at next-to-next-to-leading order in lattice chiral effective field theory. Three-body interactions first appear at this order, and we discuss several methods for determining three-body interaction coefficients on the lattice. We compute the energy of the triton and low-energy neutron-deuteron scattering phase shifts in the spin-doublet and spin-quartet channels using Luescher's finite volume method. In the four-nucleon system we calculate the energy of the alpha particle using auxiliary fields and projection Monte Carlo.

Final state interactions in the decays J/psi->VPP

We investigate the interplay between crossed channel final state interactions and the constraints from two--particle unitarity for the reactions J/psi->V pi pi and VK\bar K, where V is either omega or phi. Using a model where the parameters are largely constrained by other sources, we find that, although small, crossed channel final state interaction can influence the amplitudes considerably, in special areas of phase space. These results cast doubt on the inapplicability of unitarity constraints on production amplitudes as recently claimed in the literature.

Quark mass dependence of the pion vector form factor

We examine the quark mass dependence of the pion vector form factor, particularly the curvature (mean quartic radius). We focus our study on the consequences of assuming that the coupling constant of the rho to pions is largely independent of the quark mass while the quark mass dependence of the rho--mass is given by recent lattice data. By employing the Omnes representation we can provide a very clean estimate for a certain combination of the curvature and the square radius, whose quark mass dependence could be determined from lattice computations. This study provides an independent access to the quark mass dependence of the rho-pi-pi coupling and in this way a non-trivial check of the systematics of chiral extrapolations. We also provide an improved value for the curvature for physical values for the quark masses, namely = 0.73 +- 0.09 fm^4 or equivalently c_V=4.00\pm 0.50 GeV^{-4}.
