Nullity bounds for certain Hamiltonian delay equations

In this paper we introduce a class of Hamilton delay equations which arise as critical points of an action functional motivated by orbit interactions. We show that the kernel of the Hessian at each critical point of the action functional satisfies a uniform bound on its dimension.

State dependent Hamiltonian delay equations and Neumann one-forms

In this note we study critical points of a variation of the action functional of classical mechanics, where the Hamiltonian term is retarded. Following a more than hundert and fifty year old paper by Carl Neumann we as well introduce Taylor approximations to this functional in terms of the fine structure constant. We see how in first order in the fine structure constant this functionals are related to time dependent perturbations of the symplectic form. This observation allows us to prove Arnold type conjectures in first order in the fine structure constant.

Helium and Hamiltonian delay equations

In this paper we study two electrons on a line on the same side of the nucleus which interact with each other by their mean value. We prove that there exists a unique periodic orbit and examine for which charges the two orbits of the electrons intersect.

$J^+$-invariants for planar two-center Stark-Zeeman systems

In this paper, we introduce the notion of planar two-center Stark- Zeeman systems and define four J+-like invariants for their periodic orbits. The construction is based on a previous construction for planar one-center Stark-Zeeman system in [Cieliebak-Frauenfelder-van Koert 2017] as well as Levi-Civita and Birkhoff regularizations. We analyze the relationship among these invariants and show that they are largely independent, based on a new construction called interior connected sum.

The Omega limit set of a family of chords

In this paper we study the limit behavior of a family of chords on compact energy hypersurfaces of a family of Hamiltonians. Under the assumption that the energy hypersurfaces are all of contact type, we give results on the Omega limit set of this family of chords. Roughly speaking, such a family must either end in a degeneracy, in which case it joins another family, or can be continued. This gives a Floer theoretic explanation of the behavior of certain families of symmetric periodic orbits in many well-known problems, including the restricted three-body problem.

A Family of Periodic Orbits in the Three-Dimensional Lunar Problem

A family of periodic orbits is proven to exist in the spatial lunar problem that are continuations of a family of consecutive collision orbits, perpendicular to the primary orbit plane. This family emanates from all but two energy values. The orbits are numerically explored. The global properties and geometry of the family is studied.

The shift map on Floer trajectory spaces

In this article we give a uniform proof why the shift map on Floer homology trajectory spaces is scale smooth. This proof works for various Floer homologies, periodic, Lagrangian, Hyperkähler, elliptic or parabolic, and uses Hilbert space valued Sobolev theory.

Existence of either a periodic collisional orbit or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem

In the restricted three-body problem, consecutive collision orbits are those orbits which start and end at collisions with one of the primaries. Interests for such orbits arise not only from mathematics but also from various engineering problems. In this article, using Floer homology, we show that there are either a periodic collisional orbit, or infinitely many consecutive collision orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem on each bounded component of the energy hypersurface for Jacobi energy below the first critical value.

An iterated graph construction and periodic orbits of Hamiltonian delay equations

According to the Arnold conjectures and Floer's proofs, there are non-trivial lower bounds for the number of periodic solutions of Hamiltonian differential equations on a closed symplectic manifold whose symplectic form vanishes on spheres. We use an iterated graph construction and Lagrangian Floer homology to show that these lower bounds also hold for certain Hamiltonian delay equations.

Periodic orbits in the restricted three-body problem and Arnold's $J^+$-invariant

We apply Arnold's theory of generic smooth plane curves to Stark-Zeeman systems. This is a class of Hamiltonian dynamical systems that describes the dynamics of an electron in an external electric and magnetic field, and includes many systems from celestial mechanics. Based on Arnold's $J^+$-invariant, we introduce invariants of periodic orbits in planar Stark-Zeeman systems and study their behaviour.

Bubbles and Onis

In this article we study the gradient flow equation of a variant of the Rabinowitz action functional on very negative line bundles and relate it to periodic orbits on the base of this bundle. On very negative line bundles there are generically no holomorphic spheres.

$S^1$-equivariant Rabinowitz-Floer homology

We define the $S^1$-equivariant Rabinowitz-Floer homology of a bounding contact hypersurface $Σ$ in an exact symplectic manifold, and show by a geometric argument that it vanishes if $Σ$ is displaceable. In the appendix we describe an approach to transversality for Floer homologies for which the moduli space $\widehat M_J$ of all gradient flow lines is compact for some almost complex structure $J$. This approach uses a large set of perturbations, namely vector fields on the loop space, and selects from the possibly non-compact perturbed moduli spaces a part near $\widehat M_J$ that turns out to be compact for small enough perturbations.

A convex embedding for the rotating Kepler problem

In this note, we prove that below the first critical energy level, a proper combination of the Ligon-Schaaf and Levi-Civita regularization mappings provides a convex symplectic embedding of the energy surfaces of the planar rotating Kepler problem into $R^4$ endowed with its standard symplectic structure. A direct consequence is the dynamical convexity of the planar rotating Kepler problem, which has been established by Albers-Fish-Frauenfelder-van Koert by direct computations. This result opens up new approaches to attack the Birkhoff conjecture about the existence of a global surface of section in the restricted planar circular three body problem using holomorphic curve techniques.

A Hamiltonian version of a result of Gromoll and Grove

The theorem that if all geodesics of a Riemannian two-sphere are closed they are also simple closed is generalized to real Hamiltonian structures on $\mathbb{R}P^3$. For reversible Finsler $2$-spheres all of whose geodesics are closed this implies that the lengths of all geodesics coincide.

Local systems on the free loop space and finiteness of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity

In this article we examine under which conditions symplectic homology with local coefficients of a unit disk bundle $D^*M$ vanishes. For instance this is the case if the Hurewicz map $π_2(M)\to H_2(M;\mathbb{Z})$ is nonzero. As an application we prove finiteness of the $π_1$-sensitive Hofer-Zehnder capacity of unit disk bundles in these cases. We also prove uniruledness for such cotangent bundles. Moreover, we find an obstruction to the existence of $H$-space structures on general topological spaces, formulated in terms of local systems.
