Conductance in Co/Al2O3/Si/Al2O3 permalloy with asymmetrically doped barrier

Permalloy magnetic tunnel junctions. Complementary low frequency noise measurements are used to understand the conductance results. The obtained data indicate the breakdown of the Coulomb blockade for thickness of the asymmetric silicon layer exceeding 1.2Å. The crossover in the conductance, the dependence of the tunnelling magnetoresistance with the bias voltage and the noise below 80K correspond to 1 monolayer coverage. Interestingly, the zero bias magnetoresistance remains nearly unaffected by the presence of the silicon layer. The proposed model uses Larkin-Matveev approximation of tunnelling through a single impurity layer generalized to 3D and takes into account the variation of the barrier shape with the bias voltage. The main difference is the localization of all the impurity levels within a single atomic layer. In the high thickness case, up to 1.8Å, we have introduced a phenomenological parameter, which reflects the number of single levels on the total density of silicon atoms.

Spin Hall effect in a system of Dirac fermions in the honeycomb lattice with intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit interaction

We consider spin Hall effect in a system of massless Dirac fermions in a graphene lattice. Two types of spin-orbit interaction, pertinent to the graphene lattice, are taken into account - the intrinsic and Rashba terms. Assuming perfect crystal lattice, we calculate the topological contribution to spin Hall conductivity. When both interactions are present, their interplay is shown to lead to some peculiarities in the dependence of spin Hall conductivity on the Fermi level.

Spin relaxation and combined resonance in two-dimensional electron systems with spin-orbit disorder

Disorder in spin-orbit (SO) coupling is an important feature of real low-dimensional electron structures. We study spin relaxation due to such a disorder as well as resulting abilities of spin manipulation. The spin relaxation reveals quantum effects when the spatial scale of the randomness is smaller than the electron wavelength. Due to the disorder in SO coupling, a time-dependent external electric field generates a spatially random spin-dependent perturbation. The resulting electric dipole spin resonance in a two-dimensional electron gas leads to spin injection in a frequency range of the order of the Fermi energy. These effects can be important for possible applications in spintronics.

Current-induced interactions of multiple domain walls in magnetic quantum wires

We show that an applied charge current in a magnetic nanowire containing domain walls (DWs) results in an interaction between DWs mediated by spin-dependent interferences of the scattered carriers. The energy and torque associated with this interaction show an oscillatory behaviour as a function of the mutual DWs orientations and separations, thus affecting the DWs' arrangements and shapes. Based on the derived DWs interaction energy and torque we calculate DW dynamics and uncover potential applications of interacting DWs as a tunable nano-mechanical oscillator. We also discuss the effect of impurities on the DW interaction.

Room-temperature ferromagnetism in dielectric GaN(Gd)

We present an explanation of recently observed giant magnetic moment and room-temperature ferromagnetism in the dielectric GaN doped with Gd. Our approach uses the polarization mechanism of exchange interaction, which occurs if the d-level of Gd appears in the bandgap close to the valence band edge. Calculated ferromagnetic critical temperature and the value of the magnetic moment well correspond to experimental findings.

Fidelity Between Partial States as Signature of Quantum Phase Transitions

We introduce a partial state fidelity approach to quantum phase transitions. We consider a superconducting lattice with a magnetic impurity inserted at its centre, and look at the fidelity between partial (either one-site or two-site) quantum states. In the vicinity of the point of the quantum phase transition, we observe a sudden drop of the fidelity between two one-site partial states corresponding to the impurity location and its close vicinity. In the case of two-site states, the fidelity reveals the transition point as long as one of the two electron sites is located at the impurity, while the other lies elsewhere in the lattice. We also determine the Uhlmann mixed state geometric phase, recently introduced in the study of the structural change of the system state eigenvectors in the vicinity of the lines of thermal phase transitions, and find it to be trivial, both for one- and two-site partial states, except when an electron site is at the impurity. This means that the system partial state eigenvectors do not contribute significantly to the enhanced state distinguishability around the point of this quantum phase transition. Finally, we use the fidelity to analyze the total amount of correlations contained within a composite system, showing that, even for the smallest two-site states, it features an abrupt quantitative change in the vicinity of the point of the quantum phase transition.

Role of a spin-flip scatterer in a magnetized Luttinger liquid

We study the spin-dependent scattering of charge carriers in a magnetized one dimensional Luttinger liquid from a localized non-homogeneous magnetic field, which might be brought about by the stray field of magnetic tip near a uniform liquid, or by a transverse domain wall (DW) between two oppositely magnetized liquids. From a renormalization group treatment of the electron interactions we deduce scaling equations for the transmission and reflection amplitudes as the bandwidth is progressively reduced to an energy scale set by the temperature. The repulsive interactions dictate two possible zero temperature insulator fixed points: one in which electrons are reflected in the same spin channel and another where the electron spin is reversed upon reflection. In the latter case, a finite spin current emerges in the absence of a charge current at zero temperature and the Friedel oscillations form a transverse spiraling spin density. Adding a purely potential scattering term has no effect on the fixed points of a uniformly magnetized liquid. For a DW we find that the introduction of potential scattering stabilizes the spin-flip insulator phase even if the single-particle spin-flip scattering produced by the DW is arbitrarily weak. The potential can be induced externally, e.g. by a local gate voltage or a constriction, providing a means for controlling the transport properties of the wire.

Entanglement signatures of the quantum phase transition induced by a magnetic impurity in a superconductor

The insertion of a magnetic impurity in a superconductor induces a first order quantum phase transition as the coupling to the electronic spin density increases. As the transition is crossed, a discontinuity is exhibited by various quantities, like the total spin density, the total gap function and the gap function at the impurity location. The location of other quantum phase transitions have been detected by singularities in entanglement measures of the system. In this work we show that the single-site and two-site von Neumann entropies, the mutual information and the Meyer-Wallach measure show discontinuities at the quantum phase transition. The negativity is less sensitive to the transition. We study in detail these quantities as a function of spin coupling and distance from the impurity center.

Magnetic impurities in a superconductor: Effect of domain walls and interference

We consider the effect of magnetic impurities, modeled by classical spins, in a conventional superconductor. We study their effect on the quasiparticles, specifically on the spin density and local density of states (LDOS). As previously emphasized, the impurities induce multiple scatterings of the quasiparticle wave functions leading to complex interference phenomena. Also, the impurities induce quantum phase transitions in the many-body system. Previous authors studied the effect of either a small number of impurities (from one to three) or a finite concentration of impurities, typically in a disordered distribution. In this work we assume a regular set of spins distributed inside the superconductor in such a way that the spins are oriented, forming different types of domain walls, assumed stable. This situation may be particularly interesting in the context of spin transfer due to polarized currents traversing the material.

Anomalous Hall effect in 2D Dirac band: link between Kubo-Streda formula and semiclassical Boltzmann equation approach

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a consequence of spin-orbit coupling in a ferromagnetic metal and is related primarily to density-matrix response to an electric field that is off-diagonal in band index. For this reason disorder contributions to the AHE are difficult to treat systematically using a semi-classical Boltzmann equation approach, even when weak localization corrections are disregarded. In this article we explicitly demonstrate the equivalence of an appropriately modified semiclassical transport theory which includes anomalous velocity and side jump contributions and microscopic Kubo-Streda perturbation theory, with particular unconventional contributions in the semiclassical theory identified with particular Feynman diagrams when calculations are carried out in a band-eigenstate representation. The equivalence we establish is verified by explcit calculations for the case of the two-dimensional (2D) Dirac model Hamiltonian relevant to graphene.

Exchange interaction of magnetic impurities in graphene

The indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities localized in a graphene plane is considered theoretically, with the influence of intrinsic spin-orbit interaction taken into account. Such an interaction gives rise to an energy gap at the Fermi level, which makes the usual RKKY model not applicable. The results show that the effective indirect exchange interaction is described by a range function which decays exponentially with the distance between magnetic moments. The interaction is also shown to depend on whether the two localized moments belong to the same sublattice or are located in two different sublattices.

Transmission of correlated electrons through sharp domain walls in magnetic nanowires: a renormalization group approach

The transmission of correlated electrons through a domain wall in a ferromagnetic one dimensional system is studied theoretically in the limit of a domain wall width smaller or comparable to the electron Fermi wavelength. The domain wall gives rise to both potential and spin dependent scattering of the charge carriers. Using a poor man's renormalization group approach for the electron-electron interactions, we obtain the low temperature behavior of the reflection and transmission coefficients. The results show that the low-temperature conductance is governed by the electron correlations, which may suppress charge transport without suppressing spin current. The results may account for a huge magnetoresistance associated with a domain wall in ballistic nanocontacs.

Curie temperature control by band parameters tuning in Pb(1-x-y-z)Mn(x)Sn(y)Eu(z)Te

We present the study of magnetic and transport properties of Pb(1-x-y-z)Mn(x)Sn(y)Eu(z)Te. AC magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as transport characterization were performed. The obtained results indicate that the presence of two types of magnetic ions influences magnetic properties of investigated IV-VI semimagnetic semiconductor. A qualitative analysis and possible mechanisms of the substantial dependence of the Curie temperature on the Eu content are presented. The most likely reason of the observed Curie temperature behaviour is a strong dependence of the location of a heavy mass Sigma band upon the alloy composition. The theoretical calculations in frame of simple models confirm this point.

Role of electron correlations in transport through domain walls in magnetic nanowires

The transmission of correlated electrons through a domain wall in ferromagnetic quasi-one-dimensional systems is studied theoretically in the case when the domain wall width is comparable with the Fermi wavelength of the charge carriers. The wall gives rise to both potential and spin dependent scattering. Using a poor man's renormalization group approach, we obtain scaling equations for the scattering amplitudes. For repulsive interactions, the wall is shown to reflect all incident electrons at the zero temperature fixed points. In one of the fixed points the wall additionally flips the spin of all incident electrons, generating a finite spin current without associated charge current.

Tunable conductance of magnetic nanowires with structured domain walls

We show that in a magnetic nanowire with double magnetic domain walls, quantum interference results in spin-split quasistationary states localized mainly between the domain walls. Spin-flip-assisted transmission through the domain structure increases strongly when these size-quantized states are tuned on resonance with the Fermi energy, e.g. upon varying the distance between the domain walls which results in resonance-type peaks of the wire conductance. This novel phenomena is shown to be utilizable to manipulate the spin density in the domain vicinity. The domain walls parameters are readily controllable and the predicted effect is hence exploitable in spintronic devices.

Non-damping magnetization oscillations in a single-domain ferromagnet

Non-damped oscillations of the magnetization vector of a ferromagnetic system subject to a spin polarized current and an external magnetic field are studied theoretically by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. It is shown that the frequency and amplitude of such oscillations can be controlled by means of an applied magnetic field and a spin current. The possibility of injection of the oscillating spin current into a non-magnetic system is also discussed.

Current-induced motion of a domain wall in magnetic nanowires

The dynamics of current-induced motion of a magnetic domain wall in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnet with both easy-axis and easy-plane anisotropy, is studied. We pay a special attention to the case of a sharp domain wall, and calculate the spin torque created by the electric current. The torque has two components, one of which is acting as a driving force for the motion of the domain wall while the other distorts its shape, forcing thus the magnetic moments to deviate from the easy plane.

Magnetization self-organization in a single-domain ferromagnet subject to a spin current

The Landau-Lifshitz equation for the magnetization dynamics of a single-domain magnetic system is solved using the methods of self-organization. The description takes into account the torque due to spin transfer. The potential energy of the system includes the uniaxial and easy-plane anisotropies, and the Zeeman energy due to an external magnetic field. The equilibrium and stationary states are investigated as a function of the spin current and external magnetic field. The presented bifurcation diagram allows to determine the margins of a neutral stability mode of the equilibrium and stationary states for different values of the easy-plane anisotropy constant. Using the power spectral density method, the trajectory tracing, Hausdorff dimension, and maximum Lyapunov exponent, the dynamics of the phase states in an external magnetic field is demonstrated. The analytical transcendent equations for switching between different equilibrium states are also obtained, proving the importance of phase averaging.
