Mountain Muography for China Jinping Underground Laboratory

The China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL), located $\sim 2,400$~m beneath Jinping Mountain, is one of the world's deepest and largest ($\sim 300{,}000~\mathrm{m}^3$) underground facilities, hosting dark matter, nuclear astrophysics, and neutrino experiments. We report the first muon radiography (muography) conducted at this extraordinary depth. Cosmic muons detected by a one-ton prototype developed for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment were used to perform non-invasive subsurface density mapping over a 3~km lateral range. The 1.3~m diameter detector provides nearly isotropic acceptance and an angular resolution of $\sim 4.5^\circ$. By correlating the predicted surface muon flux distributions with the underground measurements, we reconstruct a directional opacity map that constrains the density structure of the overburden and shows excellent agreement with satellite-derived terrain models. This work demonstrates the feasibility of muography at extreme depths with kilometer-scale overburden and establishes a robust methodology for future geophysical applications and large-scale facilities, such as the full Jinping Neutrino Experiment. Based on this validated overburden model, we further predict the total muon fluxes for the eight experimental halls in CJPL-II, providing essential input for their physics programs.

Investigating Production of TeV-scale Muons in Extensive Air Shower at 2400 Meters Underground

Deep underground experiments present a new avenue to probe the first interactions in extensive air showers or hadronic interactions in the extreme forward phase space. The China Jinping Underground Laboratory, characterized by a vertical rock overburden of 2,400~m, provides an exceptionally effective shield against cosmic muons with energies below 3~TeV. The surviving high-energy muons, produced in the first interactions of extensive air showers, open a unique observational window into primary cosmic rays from tens of TeV up to the PeV scale and beyond. This distinctive feature also enables detailed studies of charged hadron production in the earliest stages of shower development. Using 1,338.6 live days of data collected with a one-ton prototype detector for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment, we measured the underground muon flux originating from air showers. The results show discrepancies of about 40\% corresponding to significances of more than 2$\sigma$, relative to predictions from several leading hadronic interaction models. We interpret these findings from two complementary perspectives: (i) by adopting the expected cosmic-ray spectra, we constrain the modeling of the first hadronic interactions in air showers and provide novel insights into resolving the long-standing \textit{muon puzzle}; and (ii) by assuming specific hadronic interaction models, we infer the mass composition of cosmic rays, and our data favor a lighter component in the corresponding energy range. Our study demonstrates the potential of deep underground laboratories to provide new experimental insights into air shower physics and cosmic rays.

Study of neutron production for 360 GeV cosmic muons

The China Jinping underground Laboratory (CJPL) is an excellent location for studying solar, terrestrial, and supernova neutrinos due to its 2400-meter vertical rock overburden. Its unparalleled depth gives an opportunity to investigate the cosmic-ray muons with exceptionally high average energy at $\sim360$ GeV. This paper details a study of muon-related backgrounds based on 1178 days of data collected by the 1-ton prototype neutrino detector used for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE) since 2017. The apparent effects for the leakage of muons' secondary particles due to detector's finite size on the measured neutron yield are first discussed in detail. The analysis of 493 cosmic-ray muon candidates and $13.6\pm5.7$ cosmogenic neutron candidates, along with a thorough evaluation of detection efficiency and uncertainties, gives a muon flux of $(3.56\pm0.16_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm0.10_{\mathrm{syst.}})\times10^{-10}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}\mathrm{s^{-1}}$ and a cosmogenic neutron yield of $(3.37\pm 1.41_{\mathrm{stat.}}\pm 0.31_{\mathrm{syst.}}) \times 10^{-4}~\mathrm{\mu}^{-1} \mathrm{g}^{-1} \mathrm{cm}^{2}$ in LAB-based liquid scintillator.

First-principle event reconstruction by time-charge readouts for the Taishan Antineutrino Observatory

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) is a liquid-scintillator satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) to measure the reference reactor neutrino spectrum with unprecented energy resolution. We use inhomogeous Poisson process and Tweedie generalized linear model (GLM) to characterize the detector response and the charge distribution of a SiPM. We develop a pure probabilistic model for time and charge of SiPMs from first principles to reconstruct point-like events in the TAO central detector. Thanks to our precise model and the high photo-coverage and quantum efficiency of the SiPM tiles at TAO, we achieve vertex position resolution better than 20mm, energy resolution of about 2% at 1MeV and <0.5% non-uniformity, marking the world's best performance of liquid scintillator detectors. With such resolution, we perceive MeV events to exhibit track effects. It opens up an exciting possibility of computed tracking calorimeter for unsegmented liquid scintillator detector like TAO. Our methodology is applicable to other experiments that utilize PMTs for time and charge readouts.

JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo

We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande.

The JUNO experiment Top Tracker

The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. This paper will present the new electronics and mechanical structure developed for the Top Tracker of JUNO along with its expected performance based on the current detector simulation.

Implementation and performances of the IPbus protocol for the JUNO Large-PMT readout electronics

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large neutrino detector currently under construction in China. Thanks to the tight requirements on its optical and radio-purity properties, it will be able to perform leading measurements detecting terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos in a wide energy range from tens of keV to hundreds of MeV. A key requirement for the success of the experiment is an unprecedented 3% energy resolution, guaranteed by its large active mass (20 kton) and the use of more than 20,000 20-inch photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) acquired by high-speed, high-resolution sampling electronics located very close to the PMTs. As the Front-End and Read-Out electronics is expected to continuously run underwater for 30 years, a reliable readout acquisition system capable of handling the timestamped data stream coming from the Large-PMTs and permitting to simultaneously monitor and operate remotely the inaccessible electronics had to be developed. In this contribution, the firmware and hardware implementation of the IPbus based readout protocol will be presented, together with the performances measured on final modules during the mass production of the electronics.

Performance of the 1-ton Prototype Neutrino Detector at CJPL-I

China Jinping Underground Laboratory provides an ideal site for solar, geo-, and supernova neutrino studies. With a prototype neutrino detector running since 2017, containing 1-ton liquid scintillator, we tested its experimental hardware, performed the detector calibration and simulation, and measured its radioactive backgrounds, as an early stage of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE). We investigated the radon background and implemented the nitrogen sealing technology to control it. This paper presents the details of these studies and will serve as a key reference for the construction and optimization of the future large detector of JNE.

Reconstruction of Point Events in Liquid-Scintillator Detectors Subjected to Total Reflection

The outer water buffer is an economic option to shield the external radiative backgrounds for liquid-scintillator neutrino detectors. However, the consequential total reflection of scintillation light at the media boundary introduces extra complexity to the detector optics. This paper develops a precise detector-response model by investigating how total reflection complicates photon propagation and degrades reconstruction. We first parameterize the detector response by regression, providing an unbiased energy and vertex reconstruction in the total reflection region while keeping the number of parameters under control. From the experience of event degeneracy at the Jinping prototype, we then identify the root cause as the multimodality in the reconstruction likelihood function, determined by the refractive index of the buffer, detector scale and PMT coverage. To avoid multimodality, we propose a straightforward criterion based on the expected photo-electron-count ratios between neighboring PMTs. The criterion will be used to ensure success in future liquid-scintillator detectors by guaranteeing the effectiveness of event reconstruction.

Fast Newton Iterative Method for Local Steric Poisson--Boltzmann Theories in Biomolecular Solvation

This work proposes a fast iterative method for local steric Poisson--Boltzmann (PB) theories, in which the electrostatic potential is governed by the Poisson's equation and ionic concentrations satisfy equilibrium conditions. To present the method, we focus on a local steric PB theory derived from a lattice-gas model, as an example. The advantages of the proposed method in efficiency are achieved by treating ionic concentrations as scalar implicit functions of the electrostatic potential, though such functions are only numerically achievable. The existence, uniqueness, boundness, and smoothness of such functions are rigorously established. A Newton iteration method with truncation is proposed to solve a nonlinear system discretized from the generalized PB equations. The existence and uniqueness of the solution to the discretized nonlinear system are established by showing that it is a unique minimizer of a constructed convex energy. Thanks to the boundness of ionic concentrations, truncation bounds for the potential are obtained by using the extremum principle. The truncation step in iterations is shown to be energy and error decreasing. To further speed-up computations, we propose a novel precomputing-interpolation strategy, which is applicable to other local steric PB theories and makes the proposed methods for solving steric PB theories as efficient as for solving the classical PB theory. Analysis on the Newton iteration method with truncation shows local quadratic convergence for the proposed numerical methods. Applications to realistic biomolecular solvation systems reveal that counterions with steric hindrance stratify in an order prescribed by the parameter of ionic valence-to-volume ratio. Finally, we remark that the proposed iterative methods for local steric PB theories can be readily incorporated in well-known classical PB solvers.

Measurement of Muon-induced Neutron Production at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

Solar, terrestrial, and supernova neutrino experiments are subject to muon-induced radioactive backgrounds. The China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL), with its unique advantage of a 2400 m rock coverage and long distance from nuclear power plants, is ideal for MeV-scale neutrino experiments. Using a 1-ton prototype detector of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE), we detected 343 high-energy cosmic-ray muons and (7.86$ \pm $3.97) muon-induced neutrons from an 820.28-day dataset at the first phase of CJPL (CJPL-I). Based on the muon-induced neutrons, we measured the corresponding muon-induced neutron yield in a liquid scintillator to be $ (3.44 \pm 1.86_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.76_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-4}\mu ^{-1}\rm g^{-1}cm^{2} $ at an average muon energy of \SI{340}{GeV}. We provided the first study for such neutron background at CJPL. A global fit including this measurement shows a power-law coefficient of (0.75$ \pm $0.02) for the dependence of the neutron yield at the liquid scintillator on muon energy.

Muon Flux Measurement at China Jinping Underground Laboratory

China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) is ideal for studying solar-, geo-, and supernova neutrinos. A precise measurement of the cosmic-ray background would play an essential role in proceeding with the R\&D research for these MeV-scale neutrino experiments. Using a 1-ton prototype detector for the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE), we detected 264 high-energy muon events from a 645.2-day dataset at the first phase of CJPL (CJPL-I), reconstructed their directions, and measured the cosmic-ray muon flux to be $(3.53\pm0.22_{\text{stat.}}\pm0.07_{\text{sys.}})\times10^{-10}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The observed angular distributions indicate the leakage of cosmic-ray muon background and agree with the simulation accounting for Jinping mountain's terrain. A survey of muon fluxes at different laboratory locations situated under mountains and below mine shaft indicated that the former is generally a factor of $(4\pm2)$ larger than the latter with the same vertical overburden. This study provides a convenient back-of-the-envelope estimation for muon flux of an underground experiment.

Si-based GeSn photodetectors towards mid-infrared imaging applications

This paper reports a comprehensive study of Si-based GeSn mid-infrared photodetectors, which includes: 1) the demonstration of a set of photoconductors with Sn compositions ranging from 10.5% to 22.3%, showing the cut-off wavelength has been extended to 3.65 um. The measured maximum D* of 1.1x10^10 cmHz^(1/2)W(-1) is comparable to that of commercial extended-InGaAs detectors; 2) the development of surface passivation technique on photodiode based on in-depth analysis of dark current mechanism, effectively reducing the dark current. Moreover, mid-infrared images were obtained using GeSn photodetectors, showing the comparable image quality with that acquired by using commercial PbSe detectors.

Si-based GeSn lasers with wavelength coverage of 2 to 3 μm and operating temperatures up to 180 K

A Si-based monolithic laser is highly desirable for full integration of Si-photonics. Lasing from direct bandgap group-IV GeSn alloy has opened a completely new venue from the traditional III-V integration approach. We demonstrated optically pumped GeSn lasers on Si with broad wavelength coverage from 2 to 3 μm. The GeSn alloys were grown using newly developed approaches with an industry standard chemical vapor deposition reactor and low-cost commercially available precursors. The achieved maximum Sn composition of 17.5% exceeded the generally acknowledged Sn incorporation limits for using similar deposition chemistries. The highest lasing temperature was measured as 180 K with the active layer thickness as thin as 260 nm. The unprecedented lasing performance is mainly due to the unique growth approaches, which offer high-quality epitaxial materials. The results reported in this work show a major advance towards Si-based mid-infrared laser sources for integrated photonics.

Laser Directly Written Junctionless In-plane-Gate Neuron Thin Film Transistors with AND Logic Function

Junctionless oxide-based neuron thin-film transistors with in-plane-gate structure are fabricated at room temperature with a laser scribing process. The neuron transistors are composed of a bottom ITO floating gate and multiples of two in-plane control gates. The control gates, coupling with the floating gate, control the "on" and "off" of the transistor. Effective field-effect modulation of the drain current has been realized. AND logic is demonstrated on a dual in-plane gate neuron transistor. The developed laser scribing technology is highly desirable in terms of the fabrication of high performance neuron transistors with low-cost.

Junctionless dual-gate electrostatic modulation of self-aligned oxide channels by chitosan-based proton conductors

Dual-gate electrostatic modulation gives an attractive approach for transistors performance improvement, threshold voltage (Vth) and operation mode modulation, which is favorable for chemical sensor and logic applications. Here, a self-aligned junctionless semiconducting oxide channels are dual-gate electrostatic modulated by solution-processed chitosan-based proton conductors on paper substrates. The low-voltage junctionless paper transistors can be effectively tuned from depletion mode to enhancement mode by the second in-plane gate. OR logic gate was experimentally demonstrated on such dual-in-plane gate junctionless transistors. Such dual-gate organic/inorganic hybrid paper transistors are promising for portable paper electronics.
