Resonant intrinsic spin Hall effect in p-type GaAs quantum well structure

We study intrinsic spin Hall effect in p-type GaAs quantum well structure described by Luttinger Hamiltonian and a Rashba spin-orbit coupling arising from the structural inversion symmetry breaking. The Rashba term induces an energy level crossing in the lowest heavy hole subband, which gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance. The resonance may be used to identify the intrinsic spin Hall effect in experiments.

Strong Coupling Solver for the Quantum Impurity Model

We propose a fast impurity solver for the general quantum impurity model based on the perturbation theory around the atomic limit, which can be used in combination with the local density approximation (LDA) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We benchmark the solver in the two band Hubbard model within DMFT against quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and numerical renormalization group (NRG) results. We find that the solver works very well in the paramagnetic Mott insulator phase. We also apply this impurity solver to the DMFT study of the anti-ferromagnetic phase transition in the unfrustrated Bethe lattice. The Neel temperature obtained by the fast impurity solver agrees very well with the QMC results in the large Hubbard U limit. The method is a promising tool to be used in combination with the LDA+DMFT to study Mott insulators starting from first principles.

Theory for supersolid $^4$He

Although both vacancies and interstitial have relatively high activation energies in the normal solid, we propose that a lower energy bound state of a vacancy and an interstitial may facilitate vacancy condensation to give supersolidity in $^{4}$He . We use a phenomenological two-band boson lattice model to demonstrate this new mechanism and discuss the possible relevance to the recently observed superfluid-like, non-classical rotational inertial experiments of Kim and Chan in solid $^{4}$He. Some of our results may also be applicable to trapped bosons in optical lattices.

Quantum coherence and Kondo effect in multi quantum dot systems

The quantum interference effect among coupled identical quantum dots is studied in the present paper in the limit of strong intra-dot Coulomb interaction. When the average electron number in each dot is a fraction of an integer, quantum interference effect is greatly enhanced because of the sharing of extra electrons by multiple dots. We show that if the extra electron (hole) number is one, the low energy effective Hamiltonian can be map into the 2-channel SU(M) Coqblin-Schriffer model, where M is the total dot number. In particular, for two-dot system with odd number of total electrons, the model is equivalent to a two channel Kondo problem with anisotropic coupling between local spin and conduction bands. The more general situation with (arbitrary) fractional average electron number in each dot is also discussed. To study the Kondo effect, we apply the self consistent ladder approximation(SCLA) to study the electron spectral function for the two-dot system. Similar method is also used to study the triple-dot system where we show how quantum coherence manifest itself in the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect.

Ground State and Spectral Properties of a Quantum Impurity in d-Wave Superconductors

The variational approach of Gunnarsson and Schönhammer to the Anderson impurity model is generalized to study d-wave superconductors in the presence of dilute spin-1/2 impurities. We show that the local moment is screened when the hybridization exceeds a nonzero critical value at which the ground state changes from a spin doublet to a spin singlet. The electron spectral functions are calculated in both phases. We find that while a Kondo resonance develops above the Fermi level in the singlet phase, the spectral function exhibits a low-energy spectral peak below the Fermi level in the spin doublet phase. The origin of such a ``virtual Kondo resonance'' is the existence of low-lying collective excitations in the spin-singlet sector. We discuss our results in connection to recent spectroscopic experiments on Zn doped high-T$_c$ superconductors.

Probing superconducting phase fluctuations from the current noise spectrum of pseudogaped metal-superconductor tunnel junctions

We study the current noise spectra of a tunnel junction of a metal with strong pairing phase fluctuation and a superconductor. It is shown that there is a characteristic peak in the noise spectrum at the intrinsic Josephson frequency $ω_J=2eV$ when $ω_J$ is smaller than the pairing gap but larger than the pairing scattering rate. In the presence of an AC voltage, the tunnelling current noise shows a series of characteristic peaks with increasing DC voltage. Experimental observation of these peaks will give direct evidence of the pair fluctuation in the normal state of high-$T_c$ superconductors and from the half width of the peaks the pair decay rate can be estimated.

Schwinger boson mean field theory of the Heisenberg Ferrimagnetic Spin Chain

The Schwinger boson mean field theory is applied to the quantum ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain. There is a ferrimagnetic long range order in the ground state. We observe two branches of the low lying excitation and calculate the spin reduction, the gap of the antiferromagnetic branch, and the spin fluctuation at $T=0K$. These results agree with the established numerical results quite well. At finite temperatures, the long range order is destroyed because of the disappearance of the Bose condensation. The thermodynamic observables, such as the free energy, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and the spin correlation at $T>0K$, are calculated. The $Tχ_{uni}$ has a minimum at intermediate temperatures and the spin correlation length behaves as $T^{-1}$ at low temperatures. These qualitatively agree with the numerical results and the difference is small at low temperatures.

Pseudogap phase in the U(1) gauge theory with incoherent spinon pairs

The pseudogap effect of underdoped high-$T_c$ superconductors is studied in the U(1) gauge theory of the t-J model including the spinon pairing fluctuation. The gauge fluctuation breaks the long range correlation between the spinon pairs. The pairing fluctuation, however, suppresses significantly the low-lying gauge fluctuations and leads to a stable but phase incoherent spin gap phase which is responsible for the pseudogap effects. This quantum disordered spin gap phase emerges below a characteristic temperature $T^{*}$ which is determined by the effective potential for the spinon pairing gap amplitude. The resistivity is suppressed by the phase fluctuation below $% T^{*}$, consistent with experiments.

Heisenberg Spin-One Chain in Staggered Magnetic Field : A Density Matrix Renormalization Group Study

Using the density matrix renormalization group technique, we calculate numerically the low energy excitation spectrum and magnetization curve of the spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain in a staggered magnetic field, which is expected to describe the physics of $R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R \neq Y) $ family below the Néel temperature of the magnetic rare-earth ($R$) sublattice. These results are valid in the entire range of the staggered field, and agree with those given by the non-linear $σ$ model study for small fields, but differ from the latter for large fields. They are consistent with the available experimental data. The correlation functions for this model are also calculated. The transverse correlations display the anticipated exponential decay with shorter correlation length, while the longitudinal correlations show explicitly the induced staggered magnetization.

The Effective Theory of Hole Doped Spin-1 Chain

An effective theory for the hole doped spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain is proposed in this paper. The two branches of low energy quasipaticle excitation is obtained by the diagrammic technique. In the large t limit(in which t is the hole hopping term), the lower band is essentially the bound state of one hole and one magnon and the other band is the sigle hole state. We find a critical value of t, $t_c=0.21Δ_H$(in which $Δ_H$ is the Haldane gap). For $t>t_c$, with the decrement of t, the mixing of these two bands become stronger and stronger, and at the same time the effective band mass becomes larger and larger. When $t<t_c$ the minimum of the lower band moves away from zero the another point between zero and $π/2$. The spin strcture factor is also calculated in this paper, and we find that for large t limit the main contribution is from the inter-band transition which induce a resonant peak in the Haldane gap. While for small t limit the main contribution is from the intra-band transition which only cause a diffusion like broad bump in the Haldan gap.

Fermi Surface Evolution, Pseudo Gap and Stagger Gauge Field Fluctuation in Underdoped Cuprates

In the context of t-J model we show that in underdoped regime, beside the usual long wave length gauge field fluctuation, an additional low energy fluctuation, staggered gauge field fluctuation plays a crucial role in the evolution of Fermi surface(FS) as well as the line shape of spectral function for the cuprates. By including the staggered gauge field fluctuation we calculate the spectral function of the electrons by RPA(random phase approximation). The line shape of the spectral function near $(π,0)$ is very broad in underdoped case and is quite sharp in overdoped case. For the spectral function near $(0.5π,0.5π)$, the quasiparticle peaks are always very sharp in both underdoped and overdoped case. The temperature dependence of the spectral function is also discussed in our present calculation. These results fit well with the recent ARPES experiments. We also calculate the FS crossover from a small four segment like FS to a large continuous FS. The reason of such kind of FS crossover is ascribed to the staggered gauge field fluctuation which is strong in underdoped regime and becomes much weaker in overdoped regime. The pseudo gap extracted from the ARPES data can be also interpreted by the calculation.

A mean field theory for the spin ladder system

In the present paper, we propose a mean field approach for spin ladders based upon the Jordan-Wigner transformation along an elaborately ordered path. We show on the mean field level that ladders with even number legs open a energy gap in their low energy excitation with a magnitude close to the corresponding experimental values, whereas the low energy excitation of the odd-number-leg ladders are gapless. It supports the validity of our approach. We then calculate the gap size and the excitation spectra of 2-leg-ladder system. Our result is in good agreement with both the experimental data and the numerical results.

Effective Mass of Composite Fermions and Fermionic Chern-Simons Theory in Temporal Gauge

The definitions of the effective mass of the composite fermion are discussed for the half-filled Landau level problem. In a recent work, Shankar and Murthy show a finite effective mass of the composite fermion by a canonical transformation while the perturbative calculation gives the logarithmic divergence of the effective mass at the Fermi surface. We will emphasize that the different definition of the effective mass has the different physical processes. The finite one could be defined for any momentum of the composite fermion while the divergence only appears at the Fermi surface. We work with the standard Halperin-Lee-Read model but in the temporal gauge. The advantage of this gauge to be employed is that the finite effective mass could be calculated in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Furthermore, it is precisely equal to the result that Shankar and Murthy obtained which is well-fit with the numerical calculation from the ground state energy analysis and a semi-classical estimation. However, if we consider the random phase approximation, one sees that the divergence of the effective mass of the quasiparticle at the Fermi surface emerges again no matter that we work on the temporal or Coulomb gauges. We develop an effective theory where the finite effective mass serves as a `bare' effective mass and show that the same divergence of the RPA effective mass. On the other hand, the correct behavior of the response functions in the small band mass limit could be seen clearly in the temporal gauge since there is a self-interaction among the magnetoplasmons.

The Fermi surface of underdoped high-T_c superconducting cuprates

The coexistence of $π$-flux state and d-wave RVB state is considered in this paper within the slave boson approach. A critical value of doping concentration $δ_c$ is found, below which the coexisting $π$-flux and d-wave RVB state is favored in energy. The pseudo Fermi surface of spinons and the physical electron spectral function are calculated. A clear Fermi-level crossing is found along the (0,0) to ($π$, $π$) direction, but no such crossing is detected along the ($π$, 0) to ($π$, $π$) direction. Also, an energy gap of d-wave symmetry appears at the Fermi level in our calculation. The above results are in agreement with the angle-resolved photoemission experiments which indicate at a d-wave pseudo-gap and a half-pocket-like Fermi surface in underdoped cuprates.
