On Uplink Performance of Multiuser Massive MIMO Relay Network With Limited RF Chains

This paper considers a multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output uplink with the help of an analog amplify-and-forward relay. The base station equips a large array of $N_d$ antennas but is supported by a far smaller number of radio-frequency chains. By first deriving new results for a cascaded phase-aligned two-hop channel, we obtain a tight bound for the ergodic rate in closed form for both perfect and quantized channel phase information. The rate is characterized as a function of a scaled equivalent signal-to-noise ratio of the two-hop channel. It implies that the source and relay powers can be respectively scaled down as $1/N_d^a$ and $1/N_d^{1-a}~ (0\!\leq\!a\!\leq\!1)$ for an asymptotically unchanged sum rate. Then for the rate maximization, the problem of power allocation is optimized with closed-form solutions. Simulation results verified the observations of our derived results.

Joint Sparse Beamforming and Power Control for Large-scale DAS with Network-Assisted Full Duplex

In this paper, we studied the joint sparse beamforming and power control for network-assisted full duplex (NAFD) in large-scale distributed antenna system (L-DAS), where the remote antenna units either be operating in half-duplex mode or full-duplex mode are all connected to the central processing unit (CPU) via high-speed backhaul links. With joint processing at CPU, NAFD could achieve truly flexible duplex, including flexible half-duplex and full-duplex. Cross-link interference and the finite-capacity backhaul are the main problems of NAFD in L-DAS. To solve these problems, we aim to maximize the aggregated rate of uplink and downlink subject to quality of service constraints and backhaul constraints. Two approaches have been proposed to solve the optimization problem, where the first approach converts the object function to the difference of two convex functions with semi-definite relax (SDR) and then an iterative SDR-block coordinate descent method is applied to solve the problem. The second method is based on sequential parametric convex approximation. Simulation results have shown that the proposed algorithms yield a higher rate gain compared to the traditional time-division duplex scheme.

Power Minimization for Wireless Backhaul Based Ultra-Dense Cache-enabled C-RAN

This correspondence paper investigates joint design of small base station (SBS) clustering, multicast beamforming for access and backhaul links, as well as frequency allocation in backhaul transmission to minimize the total power consumption for wireless backhaul based ultra-dense cache-enabled cloud radio access network (C-RAN). To solve this nontrivial problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm, which is a combination of smoothed ${\ell _0}{\text{-norm}}$ approximation and convex-concave procedure. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm converges fast and greatly reduces the backhaul traffic.

ADMM Enabled Hybrid Precoding in Wideband Distributed Phased Arrays Based MIMO Systems

Distributed phased arrays based multiple-input multiple-output (DPA-MIMO) is a recently proposed highly reconfigurable architecture enabling both spatial multiplexing and beamforming in millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems. In this work, we focus on coping with the hybrid precoding for the wideband DPA-MIMO system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. More specifically, we propose an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) enabled hybrid precoding approach based on an alternating optimization framework, abbreviated to ADMM-AltMin, for such cooperative array-of-subarrays structures. Simulation results show that the proposed ADMM-AltMin method achieves favourable performance with practical quantization of phase shifters taken into account.

Performance of Network-Assisted Full-Duplex for Cell-Free Massive MIMO

Network assisted full-duplex (NAFD) is a spatial-division duplex technique for future wireless networks with cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF massive MIMO) network, where a large number of remote antenna units (RAUs), either using half-duplex or full-duplex, jointly support truly flexible duplex including time-division duplex, frequency-division duplex and full duplex on demand of uplink and downlink traffic by using network MIMO methods. With NAFD, bi-directional data rates of the wireless network could be increased and end-to-end delay could be reduced. In this paper, the spectral efficiency of NAFD communications in CF massive MIMO network with imperfect channel state information (CSI) is investigated under spatial correlated channels. Based on large dimensional random matrix theory, the deterministic equivalents for the uplink sum-rate with minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE) receiver as well as the downlink sum-rate with zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) beamforming are derived. Numerical results show that under various environmental settings, the deterministic equivalents are accurate in both a large-scale system and system with a finite number of antennas. It is also shown that with the downlink-to-uplink interference cancellation, the uplink spectral efficiency of CF massive MIMO with NAFD could be improved. The spectral efficiencies of NAFD with different duplex configurations such as in-band full-duplex, and half-duplex are compared. With the same total numbers of transmit and receive antennas, NAFD with half-duplex RAUs offers a higher spectral efficiency. To alleviate the uplink-to-downlink interference, a novel genetic algorithm based user scheduling strategy (GAS) is proposed. Simulation results show that the achievable downlink sum-rate by using the GAS is greatly improved compared to that by using the random user scheduling.

Deep Learning Based Pilot Design for Multi-user Distributed Massive MIMO Systems

This letter proposes a deep learning based pilot design scheme to minimize the sum mean square error (MSE) of channel estimation for multi-user distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The pilot signal of each user is expressed as a weighted superposition of orthonormal pilot sequence basis, where the power assigned to each pilot sequence is the corresponding weight. A multi-layer fully connected deep neural network (DNN) is designed to optimize the power allocated to each pilot sequence to minimize the sum MSE, which takes the channel large-scale fading coefficients as input and outputs the pilot power allocation vector. The loss function of the DNN is defined as the sum MSE, and we leverage the unsupervised learning strategy to train the DNN. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves better sum MSE performance than other methods with low complexity.

User Preference Learning Based Edge Caching for Fog Radio Access Network

In this paper, the edge caching problem in fog radio access network (F-RAN) is investigated. By maximizing the overall cache hit rate, the edge caching optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal policy. Content popularity in terms of time and space is considered from the perspective of regional users. We propose an online content popularity prediction algorithm by leveraging the content features and user preferences, and an offline user preference learning algorithm by using the {online gradient descent} (OGD) method and the {follow the (proximally) regularized leader} (FTRL-Proximal) method. Our proposed edge caching policy not only can promptly predict the future content popularity in an online fashion with low complexity, {but also} can track the content popularity with spatial and temporal popularity dynamic in time without delay. Furthermore, we design two learning based edge caching architectures. Moreover, we theoretically derive the upper bound of the popularity prediction error, the lower bound of the cache hit rate, and the regret bound of the overall cache hit rate of our proposed edge caching policy. Simulation results show that the overall cache hit rate of our proposed policy is superior to those of the traditional policies and asymptotically approaches the optimal performance.

Distributed Edge Caching via Reinforcement Learning in Fog Radio Access Networks

In this paper, the distributed edge caching problem in fog radio access networks (F-RANs) is investigated. By considering the unknown spatio-temporal content popularity and user preference, a user request model based on hidden Markov process is proposed to characterize the fluctuant spatio-temporal traffic demands in F-RANs. Then, the Q-learning method based on the reinforcement learning (RL) framework is put forth to seek the optimal caching policy in a distributed manner, which enables fog access points (F-APs) to learn and track the potential dynamic process without extra communications cost. Furthermore, we propose a more efficient Q-learning method with value function approximation (Q-VFA-learning) to reduce complexity and accelerate convergence. Simulation results show that the performance of our proposed method is superior to those of the traditional methods.

Power Control via Stackelberg Game for Small-Cell Networks

In this paper, power control for two-tier small-cell networks in the uplink is investigated. We formulate the power control problem as a Stackelberg game, where the macrocell user equipment (MUE) acts as the leader and the small-cell user equipments (SUEs) as the followers. To reduce the cross-tier and co-tier interference and also the power consumption of both the MUE and SUEs, we propose to impose a set of costs on their transmit powers and optimize not only the transmit rate but also the transmit power. The corresponding optimization problems are solved by two-layer iterations. In the inner iteration, the SUEs compete with each other and their optimal transmit powers are obtained through iterative computations. In the outer iteration, the MUE's optimal transmit power is obtained in a closed form based on the transmit powers of the SUEs through proper mathematical manipulations. We prove the convergence of the proposed power control scheme, and also theoretically show the existence and uniqueness of the Stackelberg equilibrium (SE) in the formulated Stackelberg game. Simulation results show great improvement of the proposed power control scheme especially for the MUE.

Optimal Multiuser Loading in Quantized Massive MIMO under Spatially Correlated Channels

Low-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has shown great potential in facilitating cost- and power-efficient implementation of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We investigate the performance of a massive MIMO downlink network with low-resolution DACs using regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. It serves multiple receivers equipped with finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). By taking the quantization errors at both the transmitter and receivers into account under spatially correlated channels, the regularization parameter for RZF is optimized with a closed-form solution by applying the asymptotic random matrix theory. The optimal regularization parameter increases linearly with respect to the user loading ratio while independent of the ADC quantization resolution and the channel correlation. Furthermore, asymptotic sum rate performance is characterized and a closed-form expression for the optimal user loading ratio is obtained at low signal-to-noise ratio. The optimal ratio increases with the DAC resolution while it decreases with the ADC resolution. Numerical simulations verify our observations.

Polar Decoding on Sparse Graphs with Deep Learning

In this paper, we present a sparse neural network decoder (SNND) of polar codes based on belief propagation (BP) and deep learning. At first, the conventional factor graph of polar BP decoding is converted to the bipartite Tanner graph similar to low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. Then the Tanner graph is unfolded and translated into the graphical representation of deep neural network (DNN). The complex sum-product algorithm (SPA) is modified to min-sum (MS) approximation with low complexity. We dramatically reduce the number of weight by using single weight to parameterize the networks. Optimized by the training techniques of deep learning, proposed SNND achieves comparative decoding performance of SPA and obtains about $0.5$ dB gain over MS decoding on ($128,64$) and ($256,128$) codes. Moreover, $60 \%$ complexity reduction is achieved and the decoding latency is significantly lower than the conventional polar BP.

Low Complexity Iterative Detection for a Large-scale Distributed MIMO Prototyping System

In this paper, we study the low-complexity iterative soft-input soft-output (SISO) detection algorithm in a large-scale distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. The uplink interference suppression matrix is designed to decompose the received multi-user signal into independent single-user receptions. An improved minimum-mean-square-error iterative soft decision interference cancellation (MMSE-ISDIC) based on eigenvalue decomposition (EVD-MMSE-ISDIC) is proposed to perform low-complexity detection of the decomposed signals. Furthermore, two iteration schemes are given to improve receiving performance, which are iterative detection and decoding (IDD) scheme and iterative detection (ID) scheme. While IDD utilizes the external information generated by the decoder for iterative detection, the output information of the detector is directly exploited with ID. In particular, a large-scale distributed MIMO prototyping system is introduced and a 32$ \times $32 (4 user equipments (UEs) and 4 remote antenna units (RAUs), each equipped with 8 antennas) experimental tests at 3.5 GHz was performed. The experimental results show that the proposed iterative receiver greatly outperforms the linear MMSE receiver, since it reduces the average number of error blocks of the system significantly.

Performance Analysis of Multi-Cell Millimeter Wave Massive MIMO Networks with Low-Precision ADCs

In this paper, we investigate a multi-cell millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network with low-precision analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at the base station (BS). Each cell serves multiple users and each user is equipped with multiple antennas but driven by a single RF chain. We first introduce a channel estimation strategy for the mmWave massive MIMO network and analyze the achievable rate with imperfect channel state information. Then, we derive an insightful lower bound for the achievable rate, which becomes tight with a growing number of users. The bound clearly demonstrates the impacts of the number of antennas and the ADC precision, especially for a single-cell mmWave network at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It characterizes the tradeoff among various system parameters. Our analytical results are finally confirmed by extensive computer simulations.

Wideband mmWave Channel Estimation for Hybrid Massive MIMO with Low-Precision ADCs

In this article, we investigate channel estimation for wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) under hybrid architecture with lowprecision analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). To design channel estimation for the hybrid structure, both analog processing components and frequency-selective digital combiners need to be optimized. The proposed channel estimator follows the typical linear-minimum-mean-square-error (LMMSE) structure and applies for an arbitrary channel model. Moreover, for sparsity channels as in mmWave, the proposed estimator performs more efficiently by incorporating orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) to mitigate quantization noise caused by low-precision ADCs. Consequently, the proposed estimator outperforms conventional ones as demonstrated by computer simulation results.

An Enhanced SCMA Detector Enabled by Deep Neural Network

In this paper, we propose a learning approach for sparse code multiple access (SCMA) signal detection by using a deep neural network via unfolding the procedure of message passing algorithm (MPA). The MPA can be converted to a sparsely connected neural network if we treat the weights as the parameters of a neural network. The neural network can be trained off-line and then deployed for online detection. By further refining the network weights corresponding to the edges of a factor graph, the proposed method achieves a better performance. Moreover, the deep neural network based detection is a computationally efficient since highly paralleled computations in the network are enabled in emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) chips.
