Detailed Comparison of Renormalization Scale-Setting Procedures based on the Principle of Maximum Conformality

The {\it Principle of Maximum Conformality} (PMC), which generalizes the conventional Gell-Mann-Low method for scale-setting in perturbative QED to non-Abelian QCD, provides a rigorous method for achieving unambiguous scheme-independent, fixed-order predictions for physical observables consistent with the principles of the renormalization group. In addition to the original multi-scale-setting approach (PMCm), two variations of the PMC have been proposed to deal with ambiguities associated with the uncalculated higher order terms in the pQCD series, i.e. the single-scale-setting approach (PMCs) and the procedures based on ``intrinsic conformality" (PMC$_\infty$). In this paper, we will give a detailed comparison of these PMC approaches by comparing their predictions for three important quantities $R_{e^+e^-}$, $R_τ$, and $Γ(H \to b \bar{b})$ up to four-loop pQCD corrections. The PMCs approach determines an overall effective running coupling $α_s(Q)$ by the recursive use of the renormalization group equation, whose argument $Q$ represents the actual momentum flow of the process. Our numerical results show that the PMCs method, which involves a somewhat simpler analysis, can serve as a reliable substitute for the full multi-scale PMCm method, and that it leads to more precise pQCD predictions with small residual scale dependence.

QCD improved top-quark decay at next-to-next-to-leading order

We analyse the top-quark decay at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) which provides a systematic way to eliminate renormalization scheme and scale ambiguities in perturbative QCD predictions. The PMC renormalization scales of the coupling constant $α_s$ are determined by absorbing the non-conformal $β$ terms that govern the behavior of the running coupling by using the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE). We obtain the PMC scale $Q_\star=15.5$ GeV for the top-quark decay, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the conventional choice $μ_r=m_t$, reflecting the small virtuality of the QCD dynamics of the top-quark decay process. Moreover, due to the non-conformal $β$ terms disappear in the pQCD series, there is no renormalon divergence and the NLO QCD correction term is greatly increased while the NNLO QCD correction term is suppressed compared to the conventional results obtained at $μ_r=m_t$. By further including the next-to-leading (NLO) electroweak corrections, the finite $W$ boson width and the finite bottom quark mass, we obtain the top-quark total decay width $Γ^{\rm tot}_t=1.3112^{+0.0190}_{-0.0189}$ GeV, where the error is the squared averages of the top-quark mass $Δm_t=\pm0.7$ GeV, the coupling constant $Δα_s(M_Z)=\pm0.0009$ and the estimation of unknown higher-order terms using the PAA method with [N/M]=[1/1]. The PMC improved predictions for the top-quark decay are complementary to the previous PMC calculations for top-quark pair production and helpful for detailed studies of properties of the top-quark.

Precise perturbative predictions from fixed-order calculations

The intrinsic conformality is a general property of the renormalizable gauge theory, which ensures the scale-invariance of a fixed-order series at each perturbative order. Following the idea of intrinsic conformality, we suggest a novel single-scale setting approach under the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) with the purpose of removing the conventional renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities. We call this newly suggested single-scale procedure as the PMC$_{\infty}$-s approach, in which an overall effective $α_s$, and hence an overall effective scale is achieved by identifying the $\{β_0\}$-terms at each order. Its resultant conformal series is scale-invariant and satisfies all renormalization group requirements. The PMC$_{\infty}$-s approach is applicable to any perturbatively calculable observables, and its resultant perturbative series provides an accurate basis for estimating the contribution from the unknown higher-order (UHO) terms. Using the Higgs decays into two gluons up to five-loop QCD corrections as an example, we show how the PMC$_{\infty}$-s works, and we obtain $Γ_{\rm H}\big|_{\text{PMC}_{\infty}\text{-s}}^{\rm PAA} = 334.45^{+7.07}_{-7.03}~{\rm KeV}$ and $Γ_{\rm H}\big|_{\text{PMC}_{\infty}\text{-s}}^{\rm B.A.} = 334.45^{+6.34}_{-6.29}~{\rm KeV}$. Here the errors are squared averages of those mentioned in the body of the text. The Pad$\acute{e}$ approximation approach (PAA) and the Bayesian approach (B.A.) have been adopted to estimate the contributions from the UHO-terms. We also demonstrate that the PMC$_{\infty}$-s approach is equivalent to our previously suggested single-scale setting approach (PMCs), which also follows from the PMC but treats the $\{β_i\}$-terms from different point of view. Thus a proper using of the renormalization group equation can provide a solid way to solve the scale-setting problem.

New determination of $|V_{\rm cb}|$ using the three-loop QCD corrections for the $B\to D^{\ast}$ semi-leptonic decays

We present a new determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{\rm cb}|$ by using the three-loop perturbative QCD corrections for the $B\to D^{\ast}$ semi-leptonic decay. The decay width of $B\to D^{\ast}$ semi-leptonic decay can be factorized as perturbatively calculable short-distance part and the non-perturbative but universal long-distance part. We adopt the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) single-scale setting approach to deal with the perturbative series so as to achieve a precise fixed-order prediction for the short-distance parameter $η_{A}$. By applying the PMC, an overall effective $α_s$ value is achieved by recursively using the renormalization group equation, which inversely results in a precise scale-invariant pQCD series. Such scale-invariant series also provides a reliable basis for predicting the contributions from uncalculated perturbative terms. We then obtain $η_{A}=0.9225^{+0.0117}_{-0.0168}$, where the error is the squared average of those from $Δα_{s}(M_Z)=\pm0.0010$ and the uncertainties caused by the uncalculated higher-order perturbative terms. By using the data of $B\to D^{\ast}\ell\barν_{\ell}$, we finally obtain $|V_{\rm cb}|_{\rm PMC} =(40.60^{+0.53}_{-0.57})\times10^{-3}$, which is consistent with the PDG value within errors.

Hadronic production of $Ξ_{bc}$ with the intrinsic heavy-quark content at a fixed-target experiment at the LHC

In this paper, we make a detailed study on the hadronic production of the $Ξ_{bc}$ baryon at a fixed target experiment at the LHC (After@LHC). In estimating the production cross sections, the $(g+g)$, $(g+c)$ and $(g+b)$ production mechanisms are considered. For the initial heavy quarks, in addition to the extrinsic component, we also consider the intrinsic component. It is found that the $(g+c)$ and $(g+b)$ production mechanisms give sizable contributions to the $Ξ_{bc}$ production, and the $(g+b)$ mechanism dominates the production. The results show that there are about $3.40\times10^5$ $Ξ_{bc}$ events can be produced per year at After@LHC if the integrated luminosity of After@LHC can be up to $2\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ per year. Moreover, the intrinsic heavy quarks can have significant impact on the production, which inversely makes the intrinsic component be possibly tested at the After@LHC.

The solution to the `$1/2$ vs $3/2$' puzzle

Using an almost complete relativistic method based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation, we study the mixing angle $θ$, the mass splitting $\bigtriangleup M$, the strong decay widths $Γ(D^{({\prime})}_1)$ and the weak production rates $Br(B\to D^{({\prime})}_1\ellν_{\ell})$ of the $D_1(2420)$ and $D_1^{\prime}(2430)$. We find there is the strong cancellation between the $^1P_1$ and $^3P_1$ partial waves in $D_1^{\prime}(2430)$ with $θ\sim-35.3^{\circ}$, which leads to the `$1/2$ vs $3/2$' puzzle. The puzzle can not be overcome by adding only relativistic corrections since in a large parameter range where $\bigtriangleup M$ is linear varying and not small, the $θ$, $Γ(D^{({\prime})}_1)$ and $Br(B\to D^{({\prime})}_1\ellν_{\ell})$ remain almost unchanged but conflict with data. While in a special range around the mass inverse point where $\bigtriangleup M=0$ and $θ=\pm 90^{\circ}$, they change rapidly but we find the windows where $\bigtriangleup M$, $Γ(D^{({\prime})}_1)$ and $Br(B\to D^{({\prime})}_1\ellν_{\ell})$ are all consistent with data. The small $\bigtriangleup M$ confirmed by experiment, is crucial to solve the `$1/2$ vs $3/2$' puzzle.

Photoproduction of the $B_c$ meson at the future $e^+e^-$ colliders

In the present paper, we study the photoproduction of various $S$-wave $B_c$ states, i.e. $B_c(1{}^1S_0)$, $B_c^*(1{}^1S_0)$, $B_c(2{}^1S_0)$ and $B^*_c(2{}^3S_1)$, at future $e^+e^-$ colliders within the framework of non-relativistic QCD. Two sources of the initial photons can be realized in the production, i.e., the LBS photon and the WWA photon. In addition to the direct photoproduction via the sub-process, $γ+ γ\rightarrow B_c + b + \bar{c}$, we also calculate the resolved photoproduction via the sub-processes, $γ+ g \rightarrow B_c + b + \bar{c}$ and $q + \bar{q} \rightarrow B_c + b + \bar{c}$ with $q=u,d,s,g$, respectively. Numerical results indicate that the contributions from the single resolved photoproduction are significant and even dominant at certain collision configuration. At the future high-energy and high-luminosity $e^+e^-$ colliders, the $B_c$ meson generated via the photoproduction mechanism is promisingly observable and can be well studied.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to $Z\to η_Q+Q+\bar{Q}$

It has been found that at a high luminosity $e^+ e^-$ collider, sizable $η_c+c\bar{c}X$ and $η_b+b\bar{b}X$ events can be produced when it works around the $Z$ peak. In this paper, we calculate the decay widths of $Z \to η_c+c+\bar{c}+X$ and $Z \to η_b+b+\bar{b}+X$ up to next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy. We find that the NLO corrections are significant in these two processes. After including the NLO corrections, the decay widths of $Z \to η_c+c+\bar{c}+X$ and $Z \to η_b+b+\bar{b}+X$ are enhanced by about $37\%$ and $28\%$ for the case of $μ_R=2m_c$ and $μ_R=2m_b$, respectively. The differential decay widths $dΓ/ds_1$ and $dΓ/dz$ for these two decay processes are also analyzed.

New analyses of event shape observables in electron-positron annihilation and the determination of $α_s$ running behavior in perturbative domain

In this paper, we give comprehensive analyses for event shape observables in electron-positron annihilation by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) which is a rigorous scale-setting method to eliminate the renormalization scheme and scale ambiguities in perturbative QCD predictions. Conventionally the renormalization scale and theoretical uncertainties in event shape observables are often evaluated by setting the scale to the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$. The event shape distributions using this conventional scale setting are plagued by the large renormalization scale uncertainty and underestimate the experimental data. Moreover, since the renormalization scale is simply fixed to the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$, only one value of the coupling $α_s$ at the single scale $\sqrt{s}$ can be extracted. In contrast, the PMC renormalization scales are determined by absorbing the nonconformal $β$ contributions that govern the behavior of the running coupling via the Renormalization Group Equation (RGE). The resulting PMC scales change with event shape kinematics, reflecting the virtuality of the underlying quark and gluon subprocess. The PMC scales thus yield the correct physical behavior of the scale and the PMC predictions agree with precise event shape distributions measured at the LEP experiment. More importantly, we can precisely determine the running of the QCD coupling constant $α_s(Q^2)$ over a wide range of $Q^2$ in perturbative domain from event shape distributions measured at a single center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$.

Total decay width of $H \to gg$ using the infinite-order scale-setting approach based on the intrinsic conformality

We make a detailed study on the properties of the total decay width of Higgs decay channel $H\to gg$ up to $α_s^6$-order QCD corrections by using the newly suggested infinite-order scale-setting approach, which is based on the ideas of both the principle of maximum conformality and the intrinsic conformality. This approach is called as the PMC$_\infty$ approach. By using the PMC$_\infty$ approach, we observe that the conventional renormalization scale ambiguity in perturbative QCD calculation is eliminated and the residual scale dependence due to unknown higher-order terms can also be highly suppressed. We then obtain an accurate perturbative QCD prediction on the total decay width, e.g. $Γ(H \to gg)|_{\rm PMC_\infty} =336.42^{+7.01}_{-6.92}$ KeV, where the errors are squared averages of those from all the mentioned error sources.

BEEC2.0: An Upgraded Version for the Production of Heavy Quarkonium at Electron-positron Collider

The event generator BEEC [Z. Yang, X.G. Wu and X.Y. Wang, Comput. Phys. Commun. 184, 2848 (2013)] was devoted to the simulation of heavy quarkonium production at an unpolarized electron-positron collider. We upgraded it here by adding the generation of quarkonium with polarized electron and positron beams. In addition, the production of color-singlet 2S-wave states were included. Several future electron-positron colliders with high luminosity have been under discussion in the past decade. Especially, their possibility of producing polarized beams is important for providing more insights into the underlying physics. This upgraded version offers a useful tool for the feasibility study on quarkonium from the experimental side.

$a_1(1260)$-meson longitudinal twist-2 distribution amplitude and the $D\to a_1(1260)\ell^+ν_\ell$ decay processes

In the paper, we investigate the moments $\langleξ_{2;a_1}^{\|;n}\rangle$ of the axial-vector $a_1(1260)$-meson distribution amplitude by using the QCD sum rules approach under the background field theory. By considering the vacuum condensates up to dimension-six and the perturbative part up to next-to-leading order QCD corrections, its first five moments at an initial scale $μ_0=1~{\rm GeV}$ are $\langleξ_{2;a_1}^{\|;2}\rangle|_{μ_0} = 0.223 \pm 0.029$, $\langleξ_{2;a_1}^{\|;4}\rangle|_{μ_0} = 0.098 \pm 0.008$, $\langleξ_{2;a_1}^{\|;6}\rangle|_{μ_0} = 0.056 \pm 0.006$, $\langleξ_{2;a_1}^{\|;8}\rangle|_{μ_0} = 0.039 \pm 0.004$ and $\langleξ_{2;a_1}^{\|;10}\rangle|_{μ_0} = 0.028 \pm 0.003$, respectively. We then construct a light-cone harmonic oscillator model for $a_1(1260)$-meson longitudinal twist-2 distribution amplitude $ϕ_{2;a_1}^{\|}(x,μ)$, whose model parameters are fitted by using the least squares method. As an application of $ϕ_{2;a_1}^{\|}(x,μ)$, we calculate the transition form factors (TFFs) of $D\to a_1(1260)$ in large and intermediate momentum transfers by using the QCD light-cone sum rules approach. At the largest recoil point ($q^2=0$), we obtain $ A(0) = 0.130_{ - 0.013}^{ + 0.015}$, $V_1(0) = 1.898_{-0.121}^{+0.128}$, $V_2(0) = 0.228_{-0.021}^{ + 0.020}$, and $V_0(0) = 0.217_{ - 0.025}^{ + 0.023}$. By applying the extrapolated TFFs to the semi-leptonic decay $D^{0(+)} \to a_1^{-(0)}(1260)\ell^+ν_\ell$, we obtain ${\cal B}(D^0\to a_1^-(1260) e^+ν_e) = (5.261_{-0.639}^{+0.745}) \times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(D^+\to a_1^0(1260) e^+ν_e) = (6.673_{-0.811}^{+0.947}) \times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(D^0\to a_1^-(1260) μ^+ ν_μ)=(4.732_{-0.590}^{+0.685}) \times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(D^+ \to a_1^0(1260) μ^+ ν_μ)=(6.002_{-0.748}^{+0.796}) \times 10^{-5}$.

Inclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction at the ILC within the framework of non-relativistic QCD

Based on the non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics factorization framework, we study the inclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction at the future high energy $e^+e^-$ collider, International Linear Collider(ILC), where the initial photons come from the back-scattering of laser and electron (positron). The intermediate states, $c\bar{c}$$({}^3\!S_1^{[\textbf{1}]}$,${}^1\!S_0^{[\textbf{8}]}$,${}^3\!S_1^{[\textbf{8}]}$,${}^3\!P_{0,1,2}^{[\textbf{8}]})$, and resolved photoproduction processes are considered. Numerical results show that the cross section of $J/ψ$ photoproduction at the ILC could be very large, and the single resolved process via $c\bar{c}({}^1\!S_0^{[\textbf{8}]})$ intermediate state dominates primarily the production. We also present various kinematic distributions for $J/ψ$ photoproduction. Combining the high luminosity of the collision, $J/ψ$ photoproduction at the ILC shall provide a good platform to test the NRQCD factorization.

Novel and self-consistency analysis of the QCD running coupling $α_s(Q)$ in both the perturbative and nonperturbative domains

The QCD coupling $α_s$ is the most important parameter for achieving precise QCD predictions. By using the well measured effective coupling $α^{g_1}_{s}(Q)$ defined from the Bjorken sum rules as a basis, we suggest a novel and self-consistency way to fix the $α_s$ at all scales: The QCD light-front holographic model is adopted for its infrared behavior, and the fixed-order pQCD prediction under the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) is used for its high-energy behavior. Using the PMC scheme-and-scale independent perturbative series, and by transforming it into the one under the physical $V$-scheme, we observe that a precise $α_s$ running behavior in both the perturbative and nonperturbative domains with a smooth transition from small to large scales can be achieved.

Fragmentation functions for gluon into $B_c$ or $B_c^*$ meson

In the paper, we calculate the fragmentation functions for $g \to B_c$ and $g \to B_c^*$. The ultraviolet divergences in the calculation are removed through the renormalization of the operator definition of the fragmentation functions under the modified minimal subtraction scheme. We then obtain the fragmentation functions $D_{g \to B_c}(z,μ_F)$ and $D_{g \to B_c^*}(z,μ_F)$, which are presented as figures and fitting functions. The obtained fragmentation functions are complementary to the previous work on the next-to-leading order fragmentation functions for $\bar{b}\to B_c(B_c^*)$ and $c\to B_c(B_c^*)$.

$B_c \to J/ψ$ helicity form factors and the $B_c^+ \to J/ψ+(P, V, \ell^+ ν_\ell)$ decays

In this paper, we calculate the $B_c\to J/ψ$ helicity form factors (HFFs) up to twist-4 accuracy by using the light-cone sum rules (LCSR) approach. After extrapolating those HFFs to the physically allowable $q^2$ region, we investigate the $B^+_c$-meson two-body decays and semi-leptonic decays $B_c^+ \to J/ψ+(P, V, \ell^+ ν_\ell)$ with $P/V$ stands for light pseudoscalar/vector meson, respectively. The branching fractions can be derived by using the CKM matrix element and the $B_c$ lifetime from the Particle Data Group, and we obtain ${\cal B}(B_c^+ \to J/ψπ^+)=(0.136^{+0.002}_{-0.002})\%$, ${\cal B}(B_c^+ \to J/ψK^+)=(0.010^{+0.000}_{-0.000})\%$, ${\cal B}(B_c^+ \to J/ψρ^+) =(0.768^{+0.029}_{-0.033})\%$, ${\cal B}(B_c^+ \to J/ψK^{\ast +})=(0.043^{+0.001}_{-0.001})\%$, ${\cal B}(B_c^+ \to J/ψμ^+ν_μ)=(2.802^{+0.526}_{-0.675})\%$ and ${\cal B}(B_c^+ \to J/ψτ^+ν_τ)=(0.559^{+0.131}_{-0.170})\%$. We then obtain ${\cal R}_{π^+/μ^+ν_μ} = 0.048^{+ 0.009}_{-0.012}$ and ${\cal R}_{K^+ / π^+} = 0.075^{+0.005}_{-0.005}$, which agree with the LHCb measured value within $1σ$-error. We also obtain ${\cal R}_{J/ψ}=0.199^{+ 0.060}_{-0.077}$, which like other theoretical predictions, is consistent with the LHCb measured value within $2σ$-error. Those imply that the HFFs under the LCSR approach are also applicable to the $B^+_c$ meson two-body decays and semi-leptonic decays $B_c^+ \to J/ψ+(P, V, \ell^+ ν_\ell)$, and the HFFs obtained by using LCSR in a new way implies that there may be new physics in the $B_c\to J/ψ\ell^+ ν_\ell$ semi-leptonic decays.

Production of the $B_c$ meson at the CEPC

In this paper, we make a detailed study on the production of the $B_c$, $B_c^*$, $B_c(2\,^1S_0)$, and $B^*_c(2\,^3S_1)$ mesons via the three planned running modes ($Z$, $W$, and $H$) at the future Circular Electron-Positron Collider (CEPC). The fragmentation-function and full nonrelativistic QCD approaches are adopted to calculate the production cross sections. Considering the excited states shall decay to the ground $B_c$ state (e.g. $1^1S_0$-state) with almost $100\%$ probability, our numerical results show that up to next-to-leading order QCD corrections, there are about $1.4\times 10^8$ $B_c$ events to be accumulated via the $Z$ mode ($\sqrt{s}=m_{_Z}$) of the CEPC, but only about $1.6\times 10^4$ and $1.1\times 10^4$ $B_c$ events to be accumulated via the $W$ ($\sqrt{s}=160\,{\rm GeV}$) and $H$ ($\sqrt{s}=240\,{\rm GeV}$) modes, respectively. Since the $Z$ mode is the best mode among the three planned modes of the CEPC for studying the production of the $B_c$, $B_c^*$, $B_c(2\,^1S_0)$, and $B^*_c(2\,^3S_1)$ mesons and the differential distributions of these mesons may be measured precisely at this mode, we further present the differential cross sections $dσ/(dz\,d{\rm cos}θ)$ and $dσ/dz$ via the $Z$ mode of the CEPC.

The ratio $\mathcal{R}(D_s)$ for $B_s \to D_s \ellν_\ell$ by using the QCD light-cone sum rules within the framework of heavy quark effective field theory

In the paper, we study the $B_s\to D_s$ transition form factors by using the light-cone sum rules within the framework of heavy quark effective field theory. We adopt a chiral current correlation function to do the calculation, the resultant transition form factors $f_+^{B_s\to D_s}(q^2)$ and $f_0^{B_s\to D_s}(q^2)$ are dominated by the contribution of $D_s$-meson leading-twist distribution amplitude, while the contributions from less certain $D_s$-meson twist-3 distribution amplitudes are greatly suppressed. At the largest recoil point, we obtain $f_{+,0}^{B_s \to D_s}(0)=0.533^{+0.112}_{-0.094}$. By further extrapolating the transition form factors into all the physically allowable $q^2$ region with the help of the $z$-series parametrization approach, we calculate the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s \ell^\prime ν_{\ell^\prime})$ with $(\ell^\prime= e,μ)$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s τν_τ)$, which gives $\mathcal{R}(D_s)=0.334\pm 0.017$.
