Dicke Model for Quantum Hall Systems

Quantum Hall (QH) systems consist of many-body electron and nuclear spins. They are coupled so weakly through the hyperfine interaction that normally electron spin dynamics are scarcely affected by the nuclear spins. The dynamics of the QH systems, however, may drastically change when the nuclear spins interact with low-energy collective excitation modes of the electron spins. We theoretically investigate the nuclear-electron spin interaction in the QH systems as hybrid quantum systems driven by the hyperfine interaction. In particular, we study the interaction between the nuclear spins and the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) mode with the linear dispersion relation associated with the U(1) spin rotational symmetry breaking. We show that such an interaction is described as nuclear spins collectively coupled to the NG mode, and can be effectively described by the Dicke model. Based on the model we suggest that various collective spin phenomena realized in quantum optical systems also emerge in the QH systems.

Metallic behaviour in SOI quantum wells with strong intervalley scattering

The fundamental properties of valleys are recently attracting growing attention due to electrons in new and topical materials possessing this degree-of-freedom and recent proposals for val-leytronics devices. In silicon MOSFETs, the interest has a longer history since the valley degree of freedom had been identified as a key parameter in the observation of the controversial "metallic behaviour" in two dimensions. However, while it has been recently demonstrated that lifting valley degeneracy can destroy the metallic behaviour, little is known about the role of intervalley scattering. Here, we show that the metallic behaviour can be observed in the presence of strong interval-ley scattering in silicon on insulator (SOI) quantum wells. Analysis of the conductivity in terms of quantum corrections reveals that interactions are much stronger in SOI than in conventional MOSFETs, leading to the metallic behaviour despite the strong intervalley scattering. The prospect of manipulating the valley degree of freedom in materials like AlAs, 1 silicon 2--4 graphene,

Optically Induced Nuclear Spin Polarization in the Quantum Hall Regime: The Effect of Electron Spin Polarization through Exciton and Trion Excitations

We study nuclear spin polarization in the quantum Hall regime through the optically pumped electron spin polarization in the lowest Landau level. The nuclear spin polarization is measured as a nuclear magnetic field $B_N$ by means of the sensitive resistive detection. We find the dependence of $B_N$ on filling factor unmonotonous. The comprehensive measurements of $B_N$ with the help of the circularly polarized photoluminescence measurements indicate the participation of the photo-excited complexes i.e., the exciton and trion (charged exciton), in nuclear spin polarization. On the basis of a novel estimation method of the equilibrium electron spin polarization, we analyze the experimental data and conclude that the filling factor dependence of $B_N$ is understood by the effect of electron spin polarization through excitons and trions.

Valley polarization assisted spin polarization in two dimensions

Valleytronics is rapidly emerging as an exciting area of basic and applied research. In two dimensional systems, valley polarisation can dramatically modify physical properties through electron-electron interactions as demonstrated by such phenomena as the fractional quantum Hall effect and the metal-insulator transition. Here, we address the electrons' spin alignment in a magnetic field in silicon-on-insulator quantum wells under valley polarisation. In stark contrast to expectations from a non-interacting model, we show experimentally that less magnetic field can be required to fully spin polarise a valley-polarised system than a valley-degenerate one. Furthermore, we show that these observations are quantitatively described by parameter free ab initio quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We interpret the results as a manifestation of the greater stability of the spin and valley degenerate system against ferromagnetic instability and Wigner crystalisation which in turn suggests the existence of a new strongly correlated electron liquid at low electron densities.

Anisotropic nuclear-spin diffusion in double quantum wells

Nuclear-spin diffusion in double quantum wells (QWs) is examined by using dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) at a Landau level filling factor $ν=2/3$ spin phase transition (SPT). The longitudinal resistance increases during the DNP of one of the two QW (the polarization QW) by means of a large applied current and starts to decrease just after the termination of the DNP. On the other hand, the longitudinal resistance of the other QW (the detection QW) continuously increases for approximately 2h after the termination of the DNP of the polarization QW. It is therefore concluded that the nuclear spins diffuse from the polarization QW to the detection QW. The time evolution of the longitudinal resistance of the polarization QW is explained mainly by the nuclear-spin diffusion in the in-plane direction. In contrast, that of the detection QW manifests much slower nuclear diffusion in the perpendicular direction through the AlGaAs barrier.

Nuclear Magnetometry Study of Spin Dynamics in Bilayer Quantum Hall Systems

We performed a nuclear magnetometry study on quantum Hall ferromagnet with a bilayer total filling factor of $ν_{\rm{tot}} = 2$. We found not only a rapid nuclear relaxation but also a sudden change in the nuclear spin polarization distribution after a one-second interaction with a canted antiferromagnetic phase. We discuss the possibility of observing cooperative phenomena coming from nuclear spin ensemble triggered by electrons with collective spin interactions.

Gate depletion of an InSb two-dimensional electron gas

We investigated the gate control of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) confined to InSb quantum wells with an Al2O3 gate dielectric formed by atomic layer deposition on a surface layer of Al0.1In0.9Sb or InSb. The wider bandgap of Al0.1In0.9Sb compared to InSb resulted in a linear, sharp, and non-hysteretic response of the 2DEG density to gate bias in the structure with an Al0.1In0.9Sb surface layer. In contrast, a nonlinear, slow, and hysteretic (nonvolatile-memory-like) response was observed in the structure with an InSb surface layer. The 2DEG with the Al0.1In0.9Sb surface layer was completely depleted by application of a small gate voltage (-0.9 V).

Optically induced nuclear spin polarization in a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well probed by a resistance detection method in the fractional quantum Hall regime

We study the optically pumped nuclear spin polarization in a single GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well in the quantum Hall system. We apply resistive detection via the contact hyperfine interaction, which provides high sensitivity and selectivity, to probe a small amount of polarized nuclear spins in a single well. The properties of the optical nuclear spin polarization are clearly observed. We theoretically discuss the nuclear spin dynamics accompanied with doped electrons to analyze the experimental data. The optical nuclear polarization spectra exhibit electron-spin-resolved lowest Landau level interband transitions. We find that the phonon emission process, which normally assists the optical pumping process, influences the optical nuclear spin polarization. We also discuss that the electron-electron interaction can play an important role in the optical nuclear spin polarization.

Characterization of InSb quantum wells with atomic layer deposited gate dielectrics

We report magnetotransport measurements of a gated InSb quantum well (QW) with high quality Al2O3 dielectrics (40 nm thick) grown by atomic layer deposition. The magnetoresistance data demonstrate a parallel conduction channel in the sample at zero gate voltage (Vg). A good interface between Al2O3 and the top InSb layer ensures that the parallel channel is depleted at negative Vg and the density of two-dimensional electrons in the QW is tuned by Vg with a large ratio of 6.5x1014 m-2V-1 but saturates at large negative Vg. These findings are closely related to layer structures of the QW as suggested by self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson simulation and two-carrier model.

Spatial distribution of dynamically polarized nuclear spins in electron spin domains in the $ν= 2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state studied by nuclear electric resonance

Nuclear electric resonance (NER) is based on nuclear magnetic resonance mediated by spatial oscillations of electron spin domains excited by a radio frequency (RF) electric field, and it allows us to investigate the spatial distribution of the nuclear spin polarization around domain walls (DWs). Here, NER measurements were made of the dynamic nuclear spin polarization (DNP) at the spin phase transition of the fractional quantum Hall state at a Landau level filling factor of $ν=2/3$. From the RF pulse power and pulse duration dependence of the NER spectrum, we show that the DNP occurs only within $\sim 100$ nm around DWs, and that it does not occur in DWs. We also show that DWs are pinned by the hyperfine field from polarized nuclear spins.

Development of a resonant laser ionization gas cell for high-energy, short-lived nuclei

A new laser ion source configuration based on resonant photoionization in a gas cell has been developed at RIBF RIKEN. This system is intended for the future PArasitic RI-beam production by Laser Ion-Source (PALIS) project which will be installed at RIKEN's fragment separator, BigRIPS. A novel implementation of differential pumping, in combination with a sextupole ion beam guide (SPIG), has been developed. A few small scroll pumps create a pressure difference from 1000 hPa - 10^-3 Pa within a geometry drastically miniaturized compared to conventional systems. This system can utilize a large exit hole for fast evacuation times, minimizing the decay loss for short-lived nuclei during extraction from a buffer gas cell, while sufficient gas cell pressure is maintained for stopping high energy RI-beams. In spite of the motion in a dense pressure gradient, the photo-ionized ions inside the gas cell are ejected with an assisting force gas jet and successfully transported to a high-vacuum region via SPIG followed by a quadrupole mass separator. Observed behaviors agree with the results of gas flow and Monte Carlo simulations.

Robust Nodal Structure of Landau Level Wave Functions Revealed by Fourier Transform Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy is used to study the real-space local density of states (LDOS) of a two-dimensional electron system in magnetic field, in particular within higher Landau levels (LL). By Fourier transforming the LDOS, we find a set of n radial minima at fixed momenta for the nth LL. The momenta of the minima depend only on the inverse magnetic length. By comparison with analytical theory and numerical simulations, we attribute the minima to the nodes of the quantum cyclotron orbits, which decouple in Fourier representation from the random guiding center motion due to the disorder. This robustness of the nodal structure of LL wave functions should be viewed as a key property of quantum Hall states.

Nonlinear magnetic field dependence of spin polarization in high density two-dimensional electron systems

The spin polarization (P) of high-density InSb two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) has been measured using both parallel and tilted magnetic fields. P is found to exhibit a superlinear increase with the total field B. This P-B nonlinearity results in a difference in spin susceptibility between its real value Xs and Xgm ~ m*g*(m* and g* are the effective mass and g factor, respectively) as routinely used in experiments. We demonstrate that such a P-B nonlinearity originates from the linearly P-dependent g* due to the exchange coupling of electrons rather than from the electron correlation as predicted for the low-density 2DES.

Resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance via a single InSb two-dimensional electron gas at high temperature

We report on the demonstration of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) of a single InSb two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at elevated temperatures up to 4 K. The RDNMR signal of 115In in the simplest pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet triggered by a large direct current shows a peak-dip line shape, where the nuclear relaxation time T1 at the peak and the dip is different but almost temperature independent. The large Zeeman, cyclotron, and exchange energy scales of the InSb 2DEG contribute to the persistence of the RDNMR signal at high temperatures.

Quantum coherent negative bend resistance in InSb mesoscopic structures

Transport measurements were made on four-terminal devices fabricated from InSb/Al_xIn_(1-x)Sb quantum well structures at temperatures from 1.5 to 300K. Negative bend resistance, which is characteristic of ballistic transport, was observed in devices of channel widths 0.2 or 0.5 μm. We have improved upon the existing implementations of R-matrix theory in device physics by introducing boundary conditions that dramatically speed convergence. By comparison with R-matrix calculations, we show that the experimental observations are consistent with quantum coherent transport.

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in the Simplest Pseudospin Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

We present dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in the simplest pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnet (QHF) of an InSb two-dimensional electron gas with a large g factor using tilted magnetic fields. The DNP-induced amplitude change of a resistance spike of the QHF at large current enables observation of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance of the high nuclear spin isotope 115In with nine quadrupole splittings. Our results demonstrate the importance of domain structures in the DNP process. The nuclear spin relaxation time T1 in this QHF was relatively short (~ 120 s), and almost temperature independent.

Anisotropy of Magnetoresistance Hysteresis around the $ν=2/3$ Quantum Hall State in Tilted Magnetic Field

We present an anisotropy of the hysteretic transport around the spin transition point at Landau level filling factor $ν=2/3$ in tilted magnetic field. When the direction of the in-plane component of the magnetic field $B_{\parallel}$ is normal to the probe current $I$, a strong hysteretic transport due to the current-induced nuclear spin polarization occurs. When $B_{\parallel}$ is parallel to $I$, on the other hand, the hysteresis almost disappears. We also demonstrate that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_{1}^{-1}$ at the transition point increases with decreasing angle between the directions of $B_{\parallel}$ and $I$. These results suggest that the morphology of electron spin domains around $ν=2/3$ is affected by the current direction.

Fabrication and characterization of an induced GaAs single hole transistor

We have fabricated and characterized a single hole transistor in an undoped AlGaAs-GaAs heterostructure. Our device consists of a p-type quantum dot, populated using an electric field rather than modulation doping. Low temperature transport measurements reveal periodic conductance oscillations due to Coulomb blockade. We find that the low frequency charge noise is comparable to that in modulation-doped GaAs single electron transistors (SETs), and almost an order of magnitude better than in silicon SETs.
