Measurements of absolute branching fractions for $D$ mesons decays into two pseudoscalar mesons

Using a data sample of $e^+e^-$ collision data with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ taken at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s= 3.773$~GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage rings, we measure the absolute branching fractions of the two-body hadronic decays $D^+\to π^+π^0$, $K^+ π^0$, $π^+ η$, $K^+η$, $π^+η^\prime$, $K^+η^\prime$, $K_S^0 π^+$, $K_S^0 K^+$, and $D^0\to π^+ π^-$, $K^+ K^-$, $K^\mp π^\pm$, $K_S^0 π^0$, $K_S^0 η$, $K_S^0 η^\prime$. Our results are consistent with previous measurements within uncertainties. Among them, the branching fractions for $D^+\toπ^+π^0$, $K^+π^0$, $π^+η$, $π^+η^\prime$, $K_S^0 π^+$, $K_S^0 K^+$ and $D^0 \to K_S^0 π^0$, $K_S^0 η$, $K_S^0 η^\prime$ are determined with improved precision compared to the world average values.

Follow up of GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart by Australian-led observing programs

The discovery of the first electromagnetic counterpart to a gravitational wave signal has generated follow-up observations by over 50 facilities world-wide, ushering in the new era of multi-messenger astronomy. In this paper, we present follow-up observations of the gravitational wave event GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart SSS17a/DLT17ck (IAU label AT2017gfo) by 14 Australian telescopes and partner observatories as part of Australian-based and Australian-led research programs. We report early- to late-time multi-wavelength observations, including optical imaging and spectroscopy, mid-infrared imaging, radio imaging, and searches for fast radio bursts. Our optical spectra reveal that the transient source afterglow cooled from approximately 6400K to 2100K over a 7-day period and produced no significant optical emission lines. The spectral profiles, cooling rate, and photometric light curves are consistent with the expected outburst and subsequent processes of a binary neutron star merger. Star formation in the host galaxy probably ceased at least a Gyr ago, although there is evidence for a galaxy merger. Binary pulsars with short (100 Myr) decay times are therefore unlikely progenitors, but pulsars like PSR B1534+12 with its 2.7 Gyr coalescence time could produce such a merger. The displacement (about 2.2 kpc) of the binary star system from the centre of the main galaxy is not unusual for stars in the host galaxy or stars originating in the merging galaxy, and therefore any constraints on the kick velocity imparted to the progenitor are poor.

Electric field Control of Exchange Bias by Resistive Switching

We demonstrated an electric field controlled exchange bias (EB) effect accompanied with unipolar resistive switching behavior in the Si/SiO2/Pt/Co/NiO/Pt device. By applying certain voltages, the device displays obvious EB in high-resistance-state while negligible EB in low-resistance-state. Conductive filaments forming and rupture in the NiO layer but near the Co-NiO interface are considered to play dominant roles in determining the combined resistive switching and EB phenomena. This work paves a new way for designing multifunctional and nonvolatile magnetic-electrical random access memory devices.

Bolometric arrays and infrared sensitivity of VO2 films with varying stoichiometry

Here we propose a linear microbolometric array based on VOx thin films. The linear microbolometric array is fabricated by using micromachining technology, and its thermo-sensitive VOx thin film has excellent infrared response spectrum and TCR characteristics. Nano-scale VOx thin films deposited on SiO2/Si substrates were obtained by e-beam vapor deposition. The VOx films were then annealed at temperatures between 300 to 500 C with various deposition duration time. The crystal structures and microstructures were examined by XRD, SEM and ESCA. These films showed a predominant phase of rhombohedral VO2 and the crystallinity of the VO2 increased as the annealing temperature increased. Integrated with CMOS circuit, an experimentally prototypical monolithic linear microbolometric array is designed and fabricated. The testing results of the experimental linear array show that the responsivity of linear array can approach 18KV/W and is potential for infrared image systems.

Multiferroic properties of uniaxially compressed orthorhombic HoMnO3 thin films

Multiferroic properties of orthorhombic HoMnO3 (Pbnm space group) are significantly modified by epitaxial compressive strain along the a-axis. We are able to focus on the effect of strain solely along the a-axis by using an YAlO3 (010) substrate, which has only a small lattice mismatch with HoMnO3 along the other in-plane direction (the c-axis). Multiferroic properties of strained and relaxed HoMnO3 thin films are compared with those reported for bulk, and are found to differ widely. A relaxed film exhibits bulk-like properties such as a ferroelectric transition temperature of 25 K and an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below 39 K, with an ordering wave vector of (0 qb 0) with qb ~ 0.41 at 10 K. A strained film becomes ferroelectric already at 37.5 K and has an incommensurate magnetic order with qb ~ 0.49 at 10 K.

Observation of $e^+e^-\to π^0π^0 h_c$ and a neutral charmoniumlike structure $Z_c(4020)^0$

Using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider at center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=4.23$, 4.26, and 4.36~GeV, we observe $\EE\to \pphc$ for the first time. The Born cross sections are measured and found to be about half of those of $\EE\to π^+π^-h_c$ within less than 2$σ$. In the $π^0h_c$ mass spectrum, a structure at 4.02~GeV/$c^2$ is found. It is most likely to be the neutral isospin partner of the $\zcp^{\pm}$ observed in the process of $\EE\to π^+π^-h_c$ is found. A fit to the $π^0 h_c$ invariant mass spectrum, with the width of the $\zcpn$ fixed to that of its charged isospin partner and possible interferences with non-$\zcpn$ amplitudes neglected, gives a mass of ($4023.9\pm 2.2 \pm 3.8$)~MeV/$c^2$ for the $\zcpn$, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Multiferroic properties of o-LuMnO$_3$ controlled by b-axis strain

Strain is a leading candidate for controlling magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to study the coupling between magnetic order and structural distortion in epitaxial films of the orthorhombic (o-) perovskite LuMnO$_3$. An antiferromagnetic spin canting in the E-type magnetic structure is shown to be related to the ferroelectrically induced structural distortion and to a change in the magnetic propagation vector. By comparing films of different orientations and thicknesses, these quantities are found to be controlled by b-axis strain. It is shown that compressive strain destabilizes the commensurate E-type structure and reduces its accompanying ferroelectric distortion.

Film structure of epitaxial graphene oxide on SiC: Insight on the relationship between interlayer spacing, water content, and intralayer structure

Chemical oxidation of multilayer graphene grown on silicon carbide yields films exhibiting reproducible characteristics, lateral uniformity, smoothness over large areas, and manageable chemical complexity, thereby opening opportunities to accelerate both fundamental understanding and technological applications of this form of graphene oxide films. Here, we investigate the vertical inter-layer structure of these ultra-thin oxide films. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and IR experiments show that the multilayer films exhibit excellent inter-layer registry, little amount (<10%) of intercalated water, and unexpectedly large interlayer separations of about 9.35 Å. Density functional theory calculations show that the apparent contradiction of "little water but large interlayer spacing in the graphene oxide films" can be explained by considering a multilayer film formed by carbon layers presenting, at the nanoscale, a non-homogenous oxidation, where non-oxidized and highly oxidized nano-domains coexist and where a few water molecules trapped between oxidized regions of the stacked layers are sufficient to account for the observed large inter-layer separations. This work sheds light on both the vertical and intra-layer structure of graphene oxide films grown on silicon carbide, and more in general, it provides novel insight on the relationship between inter-layer spacing, water content, and structure of graphene/graphite oxide materials.

The time series forecasting: from the aspect of network

Forecasting can estimate the statement of events according to the historical data and it is considerably important in many disciplines. At present, time series models have been utilized to solve forecasting problems in various domains. In general, researchers use curve fitting and parameter estimation methods (moment estimation, maximum likelihood estimation and least square method) to forecast. In this paper, a new sight is given to the forecasting and a completely different method is proposed to forecast time series. Inspired by the visibility graph and link prediction, this letter converts time series into network and then finds the nodes which are mostly likelihood to link with the predicted node. Finally, the predicted value will be obtained according to the state of the link. The TAIEX data set is used in the case study to illustrate that the proposed method is effectiveness. Compared with ARIMA model, the proposed shows a good forecasting performance when there is a small amount of data.

Strain-induced ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic LuMnO3 thin films

Single phase and strained LuMnO3 thin films are discovered to display co-existing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders. A large moment ferromagnetism (approx. 1 muB), which is absent in bulk samples, is shown to display a magnetic moment distribution that is peaked at the highly-strained substrate-film interface. We further show that the strain-induced ferromagnetism and the antiferromagnetic order are coupled via an exchange field, therefore demonstrating strained rare-earth managanite thin films as promising candidate systems for new multifunctional devices.

Optical absorption in highly-strained Ge/SiGe quantum wells: the role of Γ-to-Δ scattering

We report the observation of the quantum-confined Stark effect in Ge/SiGe multiple quantum well heterostructures grown on Si(0.22)Ge(0.78) virtual substrates. The large compressive strain in the Ge quantum well layers caused by the lattice mismatch with the virtual substrate results in a blue shift of the direct absorption edge, as well as a reduction in the Γ-valley scattering lifetime because of strain-induced splittings of the conduction band valleys. We investigate theoretically the Γ-valley carrier lifetimes by evaluating the Γ-to-L and Γ-to-Δ scattering rates in strained Ge/SiGe semiconductor heterostructures. These scattering rates are used to determine the lifetime broadening of excitonic peaks and the indirect absorption in simulated absorption spectra, which are compared with measured absorption spectra for quantum well structures with systematically-varied dimensions. We find that Γ-to-Δ scattering is significant in compressively strained Ge quantum wells and that the Γ-valley electron lifetime is less than 50 fs in the highly-strained structures reported here, where Γ-to-Δ scattering accounted for approximately half of the total scattering rate.

Deterministic Generation of Entangled Photons in Superconducting Resonator Arrays

We present a scheme for the deterministic generation of entangled photon pairs in a superconducting resonator array. The resonators form a Jaynes-Cummings lattice via the coupling to superconducting qubits, and the Kerr-like nonlinearity arises due to the coupling. We show that entangled photons can be generated on demand by applying spectroscopic techniques and exploiting the nonlinearity and symmetry in the resonators. The scheme is robust against small parameter spreads due to fabrication errors. Our findings can be used as a key element for quantum information processing in superconducting quantum circuits.

High-fidelity quantum memory using nitrogen-vacancy center ensemble for hybrid quantum computation

We study a hybrid quantum computing system using nitrogen-vacancy center ensemble (NVE) as quantum memory, current-biased Josephson junction (CBJJ) superconducting qubit fabricated in a transmission line resonator (TLR) as quantum computing processor and the microwave photons in TLR as quantum data bus. The storage process is seriously treated by considering all kinds of decoherence mechanisms. Such a hybrid quantum device can also be used to create multi-qubit W states of NVEs through a common CBJJ. The experimental feasibility and challenge are justified using currently available technology.

Universal Quantum Degeneracy Point for Superconducting Qubits

The quantum degeneracy point approach [D. Vion et al., Science 296, 886 (2002)] effectively protects superconducting qubits from low-frequency noise that couples with the qubits as transverse noise. However, low-frequency noise in superconducting qubits can originate from various mechanisms and can couple with the qubits either as transverse or as longitudinal noise. Here, we present a quantum circuit containing a universal quantum degeneracy point that protects an encoded qubit from arbitrary low-frequency noise. We further show that universal quantum logic gates can be performed on the encoded qubit with high gate fidelity. The proposed scheme is robust against small parameter spreads due to fabrication errors in the superconducting qubits.

Directed self-organization of graphene nanoribbons on SiC

Realization of post-CMOS graphene electronics requires production of semiconducting graphene, which has been a labor-intensive process. We present tailoring of silicon carbide crystals via conventional photolithography and microelectronics processing to enable templated graphene growth on 4H-SiC{1-10n} (n = 8) crystal facets rather than the customary {0001} planes. This allows self-organized growth of graphene nanoribbons with dimensions defined by those of the facet. Preferential growth is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) measurements, and electrical characterization of prototypic graphene devices is presented. Fabrication of > 10,000 top-gated graphene transistors on a 0.24 cm2 SiC chip demonstrates scalability of this process and represents the highest density of graphene devices reported to date.

First direct observation of a nearly ideal graphene band structure

Angle-resolved photoemission and X-ray diffraction experiments show that multilayer epitaxial graphene grown on the SiC(000-1) surface is a new form of carbon that is composed of effectively isolated graphene sheets. The unique rotational stacking of these films cause adjacent graphene layers to electronically decouple leading to a set of nearly independent linearly dispersing bands (Dirac cones) at the graphene K-point. Each cone corresponds to an individual macro-scale graphene sheet in a multilayer stack where AB-stacked sheets can be considered as low density faults.

The low-mass stellar mass functions of rich, compact clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Context. We use Hubble Space Telescope photometry of six rich, compact star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), with ages ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 Gyr, to derive the clusters' stellar mass functions (MFs) at their half-mass radii. Aims. The LMC is an ideal environment to study stellar MFs, because it contains a large population of compact clusters at different evolutionary stages. We aim to obtain constraints on the initial MFs (IMFs) of our sample clusters on the basis of their present-day MFs, combined with our understanding of their dynamical and photometric evolution. Methods. We derive the clusters' present-day MFs below 1.0 Msun using deep observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and updated stellar population synthesis models. Results. Since the relaxation timescales of low-mass stars are very long, dynamical evolution will not have affected the MFs below 1.0 Msun significantly, so that - within the uncertainties - the derived MFs are consistent with the solar-neighbourhood IMF, at least for the younger clusters. Conclusions. The IMF in the low-density, low-metallicity environment of the LMC disk is not significantly different from that in the solar neighbourhood.

The initial mass function of the rich young cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We use deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the rich, young (~20-45 Myr-old) star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to derive its stellar mass function (MF) down to ~0.15 Msun. This represents the deepest robust MF thus far obtained for a stellar system in an extragalactic, low-metallicity ([Fe/H]~-0.4 dex) environment. Combining our results with the published MF for masses above 1.0 Msun, we obtain a complete present-day MF. This is a good representation of the cluster's initial MF (IMF), particularly at low masses, because our observations are centred on the cluster's uncrowded half-mass radius. Therefore, stellar and dynamical evolution of the cluster will not have affected the low-mass stars significantly. The NGC 1818 IMF is well described by both a lognormal and a broken power-law distribution with slopes of Gamma=0.46+/-0.10 and Gamma~-1.35 (Salpeter-like) for masses in the range from 0.15 to 0.8 Msun and greater than 0.8 Msun, respectively. Within the uncertainties, the NGC 1818 IMF is fully consistent with both the Kroupa solar-neighbourhood and the Chabrier lognormal mass distributions.
