Towards Inference Efficient Deep Ensemble Learning

Ensemble methods can deliver surprising performance gains but also bring significantly higher computational costs, e.g., can be up to 2048X in large-scale ensemble tasks. However, we found that the majority of computations in ensemble methods are redundant. For instance, over 77% of samples in CIFAR-100 dataset can be correctly classified with only a single ResNet-18 model, which indicates that only around 23% of the samples need an ensemble of extra models. To this end, we propose an inference efficient ensemble learning method, to simultaneously optimize for effectiveness and efficiency in ensemble learning. More specifically, we regard ensemble of models as a sequential inference process and learn the optimal halting event for inference on a specific sample. At each timestep of the inference process, a common selector judges if the current ensemble has reached ensemble effectiveness and halt further inference, otherwise filters this challenging sample for the subsequent models to conduct more powerful ensemble. Both the base models and common selector are jointly optimized to dynamically adjust ensemble inference for different samples with various hardness, through the novel optimization goals including sequential ensemble boosting and computation saving. The experiments with different backbones on real-world datasets illustrate our method can bring up to 56\% inference cost reduction while maintaining comparable performance to full ensemble, achieving significantly better ensemble utility than other baselines. Mass testing of the JUNO experiment 20-inch PMTs readout electronics

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a multi-purpose, large size, liquid scintillator experiment under construction in China. JUNO will perform leading measurements detecting neutrinos from different sources (reactor, terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos) covering a wide energy range (from 200 keV to several GeV). This paper focuses on the design and development of a test protocol for the 20-inch PMT underwater readout electronics, performed in parallel to the mass production line. In a time period of about ten months, a total number of 6950 electronic boards were tested with an acceptance yield of 99.1%.

Adaptive Data Debiasing through Bounded Exploration

Biases in existing datasets used to train algorithmic decision rules can raise ethical and economic concerns due to the resulting disparate treatment of different groups. We propose an algorithm for sequentially debiasing such datasets through adaptive and bounded exploration in a classification problem with costly and censored feedback. Exploration in this context means that at times, and to a judiciously-chosen extent, the decision maker deviates from its (current) loss-minimizing rule, and instead accepts some individuals that would otherwise be rejected, so as to reduce statistical data biases. Our proposed algorithm includes parameters that can be used to balance between the ultimate goal of removing data biases -- which will in turn lead to more accurate and fair decisions, and the exploration risks incurred to achieve this goal. We analytically show that such exploration can help debias data in certain distributions. We further investigate how fairness criteria can work in conjunction with our data debiasing algorithm. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm using experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets.

Validation and integration tests of the JUNO 20-inch PMTs readout electronics

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large neutrino detector currently under construction in China. JUNO will be able to study the neutrino mass ordering and to perform leading measurements detecting terrestrial and astrophysical neutrinos in a wide energy range, spanning from 200 keV to several GeV. Given the ambitious physics goals of JUNO, the electronic system has to meet specific tight requirements, and a thorough characterization is required. The present paper describes the tests performed on the readout modules to measure their performances.

The rational cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(p^2M)$ with $M$ squarefree

For a positive integer $N$, let $\mathscr{C}_N(\mathbb{Q})$ be the rational cuspidal subgroup of $J_0(N)$ and $\mathscr{C}(N)$ be the rational cuspidal divisor class group of $X_0(N)$, which are both subgroups of the rational torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$. We prove that two groups $\mathscr{C}_N(\mathbb{Q})$ and $\mathscr{C}(N)$ are equal when $N=p^2M$ for any prime $p$ and any squarefree integer $M$. To achieve this we show that all modular units on $X_0(N)$ can be written as products of certain functions $F_{m, h}$, which are constructed from generalized Dedekind eta functions. Also, we determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for such products to be modular units on $X_0(N)$ under a mild assumption.

Similarity Distribution based Membership Inference Attack on Person Re-identification

While person Re-identification (Re-ID) has progressed rapidly due to its wide real-world applications, it also causes severe risks of leaking personal information from training data. Thus, this paper focuses on quantifying this risk by membership inference (MI) attack. Most of the existing MI attack algorithms focus on classification models, while Re-ID follows a totally different training and inference paradigm. Re-ID is a fine-grained recognition task with complex feature embedding, and model outputs commonly used by existing MI like logits and losses are not accessible during inference. Since Re-ID focuses on modelling the relative relationship between image pairs instead of individual semantics, we conduct a formal and empirical analysis which validates that the distribution shift of the inter-sample similarity between training and test set is a critical criterion for Re-ID membership inference. As a result, we propose a novel membership inference attack method based on the inter-sample similarity distribution. Specifically, a set of anchor images are sampled to represent the similarity distribution conditioned on a target image, and a neural network with a novel anchor selection module is proposed to predict the membership of the target image. Our experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on both the Re-ID task and conventional classification task.

Double-hit separation and dE/dx resolution of a time projection chamber with GEM readout

A time projection chamber (TPC) with micropattern gaseous detector (MPGD) readout is investigated as main tracking device of the International Large Detector (ILD) concept at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC). A prototype TPC equipped with a triple gas electron multiplier (GEM) readout has been built and operated in an electron test beam. The TPC was placed in a 1 T solenoidal field at the DESY II Test Beam Facility, which provides an electron beam up to 6 GeV/c. The performance of the readout modules, in particular the spatial point resolution, is determined and compared to earlier tests. New studies are presented with first results on the separation of close-by tracks and the capability of the system to measure the specific energy loss dE/dx. This is complemented by a simulation study on the optimization of the readout granularity to improve particle identification by dE/dx.

Check on the features of potted 20-inch PMTs with 1F3 electronics prototype at Pan-Asia

The Jiangmen underground neutrino observatory (JUNO) is a neutrino project with a 20-kton liquid scintillator detector located at 700-m underground. The large 20-inch PMTs are one of the crucial components of the JUNO experiment aiming to precision neutrino measurements with better than 3% energy resolution at 1 MeV. The excellent energy resolution and a large fiducial volume provide many exciting opportunities for addressing important topics in neutrino and astro-particle physics. With the container #D at JUNO Pan-Asia PMT testing and potting station, the features of waterproof potted 20-inch PMTs were measured with JUNO 1F3 electronics prototype in waveform and charge, which are valuable for better understanding on the performance of the waterproof potted PMTs and the JUNO 1F3 electronics. In this paper, basic features of JUNO 1F3 electronics prototype run at Pan-Asia will be introduced, followed by an analysis of the waterproof potted 20-inch PMTs and a comparison with the results from commercial electronics used by the container #A and #B.

Online Video Super-Resolution with Convolutional Kernel Bypass Graft

Deep learning-based models have achieved remarkable performance in video super-resolution (VSR) in recent years, but most of these models are less applicable to online video applications. These methods solely consider the distortion quality and ignore crucial requirements for online applications, e.g., low latency and low model complexity. In this paper, we focus on online video transmission, in which VSR algorithms are required to generate high-resolution video sequences frame by frame in real time. To address such challenges, we propose an extremely low-latency VSR algorithm based on a novel kernel knowledge transfer method, named convolutional kernel bypass graft (CKBG). First, we design a lightweight network structure that does not require future frames as inputs and saves extra time costs for caching these frames. Then, our proposed CKBG method enhances this lightweight base model by bypassing the original network with ``kernel grafts'', which are extra convolutional kernels containing the prior knowledge of external pretrained image SR models. In the testing phase, we further accelerate the grafted multi-branch network by converting it into a simple single-path structure. Experiment results show that our proposed method can process online video sequences up to 110 FPS, with very low model complexity and competitive SR performance.

Investigating Information Inconsistency in Multilingual Open-Domain Question Answering

Retrieval based open-domain QA systems use retrieved documents and answer-span selection over retrieved documents to find best-answer candidates. We hypothesize that multilingual Question Answering (QA) systems are prone to information inconsistency when it comes to documents written in different languages, because these documents tend to provide a model with varying information about the same topic. To understand the effects of the biased availability of information and cultural influence, we analyze the behavior of multilingual open-domain question answering models with a focus on retrieval bias. We analyze if different retriever models present different passages given the same question in different languages on TyDi QA and XOR-TyDi QA, two multilingualQA datasets. We speculate that the content differences in documents across languages might reflect cultural divergences and/or social biases.

FaceMap: Towards Unsupervised Face Clustering via Map Equation

Face clustering is an essential task in computer vision due to the explosion of related applications such as augmented reality or photo album management. The main challenge of this task lies in the imperfectness of similarities among image feature representations. Given an existing feature extraction model, it is still an unresolved problem that how can the inherent characteristics of similarities of unlabelled images be leveraged to improve the clustering performance. Motivated by answering the question, we develop an effective unsupervised method, named as FaceMap, by formulating face clustering as a process of non-overlapping community detection, and minimizing the entropy of information flows on a network of images. The entropy is denoted by the map equation and its minimum represents the least description of paths among images in expectation. Inspired by observations on the ranked transition probabilities in the affinity graph constructed from facial images, we develop an outlier detection strategy to adaptively adjust transition probabilities among images. Experiments with ablation studies demonstrate that FaceMap significantly outperforms existing methods and achieves new state-of-the-arts on three popular large-scale datasets for face clustering, e.g., an absolute improvement of more than $10\%$ and $4\%$ comparing with prior unsupervised and supervised methods respectively in terms of average of Pairwise F-score. Our code is publicly available on github.

Modular Ordinary Differential Equations on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of Third Order and Applications

In this paper, we study third-order modular ordinary differential equations (MODE for short) of the following form $y'''+Q_2(z)y'+Q_3(z)y=0$, $z\in\mathbb{H}=\{z\in\mathbb{C} \,|\,\operatorname{Im}z>0 \}$, where $Q_2(z)$ and $Q_3(z)-\frac12 Q_2'(z)$ are meromorphic modular forms on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of weight $4$ and $6$, respectively. We show that any quasimodular form of depth $2$ on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ leads to such a MODE. Conversely, we introduce the so-called Bol representation $\hatρ\colon {\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})\to{\rm SL}(3,\mathbb{C})$ for this MODE and give the necessary and sufficient condition for the irreducibility (resp. reducibility) of the representation. We show that the irreducibility yields the quasimodularity of some solution of this MODE, while the reducibility yields the modularity of all solutions and leads to solutions of certain ${\rm SU}(3)$ Toda systems. Note that the ${\rm SU}(N+1)$ Toda systems are the classical Plücker infinitesimal formulas for holomorphic maps from a Riemann surface to $\mathbb{CP}^N$.

From 996 to 007: Challenges of Working from Home During the Epidemic in China

During the COVID-19 epidemic in China, millions of workers in tech companies had to start working from home (WFH). The change was sudden, unexpected and companies were not ready for it. Additionally, it was also the first time that WFH was experienced on such a large scale. We used the opportunity to describe the effect of WFH at scale for a sustained period of time. As the lockdown was easing, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 participants from China working in tech companies. While at first, WFH was reported as a pleasant experience with advantages, e.g. flexible schedule, more time with family, over time, this evolved into a rather negative experience where workers start working all day, every day and feel a higher workload despite the actual workload being reduced. We discuss these results and how they could apply for other extreme circumstances and to help improve WFH in general.

Directional Self-supervised Learning for Heavy Image Augmentations

Despite the large augmentation family, only a few cherry-picked robust augmentation policies are beneficial to self-supervised image representation learning. In this paper, we propose a directional self-supervised learning paradigm (DSSL), which is compatible with significantly more augmentations. Specifically, we adapt heavy augmentation policies after the views lightly augmented by standard augmentations, to generate harder view (HV). HV usually has a higher deviation from the original image than the lightly augmented standard view (SV). Unlike previous methods equally pairing all augmented views to symmetrically maximize their similarities, DSSL treats augmented views of the same instance as a partially ordered set (with directions as SV$\leftrightarrow $SV, SV$\leftarrow$HV), and then equips a directional objective function respecting to the derived relationships among views. DSSL can be easily implemented with a few lines of codes and is highly flexible to popular self-supervised learning frameworks, including SimCLR, SimSiam, BYOL. Extensive experimental results on CIFAR and ImageNet demonstrated that DSSL can stably improve various baselines with compatibility to a wider range of augmentations.

Design of an Internet of Things - based multi-channel temperature monitoring system

In the scope of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) project, 6 back-end card (BEC) mezzanines connected to one BEC base board are in charge of compensating the attenuated incoming data from 48 front-end channels over 48 100-meter-long ethernet cables. Each of the mezzanines has 16 equalizers that may be subject to overheating. It is important therefore to monitor their temperature in real time. However, collecting data from a relatively large (1080) number of mezzanines is not a trivial task. In this work we propose a solution based on Wi-Fi mesh. Both the technical details and the first test results performed are be reported.

Metrics with positive constant curvature and modular differential equations

In this paper, we consider the problem when a differential equation y"(z)=Q(z)y(z) is Fuchsian on H* and apparent on H, where Q(z) is a meromorphic modular form of weight 4 on SL(2,Z) and H denotes the complex upper half-plane. Such a problem is closely related to the problem of the existence of a conformal metric with curvature 1/2 on H.

Foresight of Graph Reinforcement Learning Latent Permutations Learnt by Gumbel Sinkhorn Network

Vital importance has necessity to be attached to cooperation in multi-agent environments, as a result of which some reinforcement learning algorithms combined with graph neural networks have been proposed to understand the mutual interplay between agents. However, highly complicated and dynamic multi-agent environments require more ingenious graph neural networks, which can comprehensively represent not only the graph topology structure but also evolution process of the structure due to agents emerging, disappearing and moving. To tackle these difficulties, we propose Gumbel Sinkhorn graph attention reinforcement learning, where a graph attention network highly represents the underlying graph topology structure of the multi-agent environment, and can adapt to the dynamic topology structure of graph better with the help of Gumbel Sinkhorn network by learning latent permutations. Empirically, simulation results show how our proposed graph reinforcement learning methodology outperforms existing methods in the PettingZoo multi-agent environment by learning latent permutations.
