Improving the trainability of VQE on NISQ computers for solving portfolio optimization using convex interpolation

Solving combinatorial optimization problems using variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) might be a promise application in the NISQ era. However, the limited trainability of VQAs could hinder their scalability to large problem sizes. In this paper, we improve the trainability of variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) by utilizing convex interpolation to solve portfolio optimization. Based on convex interpolation, the location of the ground state can be evaluated by learning the property of a small subset of basis states in the Hilbert space. This enlightens naturally the proposals of the strategies of close-to-solution initialization, regular cost function landscape, and recursive ansatz equilibrium partition. The successfully implementation of a $40$-qubit experiment using only $10$ superconducting qubits demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposals. Furthermore, the quantum inspiration has also spurred the development of a prototype greedy algorithm. Extensive numerical simulations indicate that the hybridization of VQE and greedy algorithms achieves a mutual complementarity, combining the advantages of both global and local optimization methods. Our proposals can be extended to improve the trainability for solving other large-scale combinatorial optimization problems that are widely used in real applications, paving the way to unleash quantum advantages of NISQ computers in the near future.

JUNO 20-inch PMT and electronics system characterization using large pulses of PMT dark counts at the Pan-Asia testing platform

The main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering with a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. The 20-inch PMT and its 1F3 (one for three) electronics are crucial to realize the excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1MeV. The knowledge on the PMT and 1F3 electronics response is critical for detector performance understanding. A study of the JUNO 20-inch PMT and 1F3 electronics system characterization is presented using large pulses of PMT dark count at the Pan-Asia testing platform in China. Thanks to its broad amplitude range and high rate, the large pulse signals are also used to investigate the PMT after pulse response.

GAN decoder on a quantum toric code for noise-robust quantum teleportation

We propose a generative adversarial network (GAN)-based decoder for quantum topological codes and apply it to enhance a quantum teleportation protocol under depolarizing noise. By constructing and training the GAN's generator and discriminator networks using eigenvalue datasets from the code, we obtain a decoder with a significantly improved decoding pseudo-threshold. Simulation results show that our GAN decoder achieves a pseudo-threshold of approximately $p=0.2108$, estimated from the crossing point of logical error rate curves for code distances $d=3$ and $d=5$, nearly double that of a classical decoder under the same conditions ($p \approx 0.1099$). Moreover, at the same target logical error rate, the GAN decoder consistently achieves higher logical fidelity compared to the classical decoder. When applied to quantum teleportation, the protocol optimized using our decoder demonstrates enhanced fidelity across noise regimes. Specifically, for code distance $d=3$, fidelity improves within the depolarizing noise threshold range $P<0.06503$; for $d=5$, the range extends to $P<0.07512$. Moreover, with appropriate training, our GAN decoder can generalize to other error models. This work positions GANs as powerful tools for decoding in topological quantum error correction, offering a flexible and noise-resilient framework for fault-tolerant quantum information processing.

Doping Evolution of Nodal Electron Dynamics in Trilayer Cuprate Superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ Revealed by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The doping evolution of the nodal electron dynamics in the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223) is investigated using high-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Bi2223 single crystals with different doping levels are prepared by controlled annealing which cover the underdoped, optimally-doped and overdoped regions. The electronic phase diagram of Bi2223 is established which describes the T$_\mathrm{c}$ dependence on the sample doping level. The doping dependence of the nodal Fermi momentum for the outer (OP) and inner (IP) CuO$_2$ planes is determined. Charge distribution imbalance between the OP and IP CuO$_2$ planes is quantified, showing enhanced disparity with increasing doping. Nodal band dispersions demonstrate a prominent kink at $\sim$94$\,$meV in the IP band, attributed to the unique Cu coordination in the IP plane, while a weaker $\sim$60$\,$meV kink is observed in the OP band. The nodal Fermi velocity of both OP and IP bands is nearly constant at $\sim$1.62$\,$eVÅ independent of doping. These results provide important information to understand the origin of high T$_\mathrm{c}$ and superconductivity mechanism in high temperature cuprate superconductors.

Dark Count Rate Stability of JUNO 20-inch PMTs in Mass Testing

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is an ambitious multipurpose neutrino experiment designed to determine the neutrino mass ordering, with an impressive energy resolution goal of at least 3% at 1 MeV. To achieve a photon detection coverage of approximately 75%, JUNO will utilize two types of 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs): the large PMT (LPMT) and the microchannel plate PMT (MCP-PMT). A significant concern in high-precision neutrino measurements is the dark count rate (DCR) of PMTs, which introduces noise that can adversely affect energy measurement accuracy. During the mass testing phase of the JUNO 20-inch PMTs, comprehensive measurements of the DCR were undertaken. These measurements not only captured the DCR values of individual PMTs but also examined the stability and temperature dependence of the DCR at an operating gain of (1x10^7). This paper presents a detailed characterization of the DCR of the JUNO 20-inch PMTs, investigating factors such as cooling time, temperature variations, and long-term stability using the JUNO Pan-Asia PMT testing facilities. The results reveal distinct DCR characteristics between the two types of PMTs, providing valuable insights into the nature of DCR and its implications for JUNO's scientific objectives. In addition to performance characterization, we implemented a monitoring system to track DCR stability over time. Notably, several spikes in DCR were identified, prompting a preliminary investigation into their causes. Potential factors contributing to these spikes, such as flasher events, were explored using coincidence rate analysis and complementary imaging techniques. The findings from this study are crucial for optimizing the performance of PMTs in JUNO, ultimately aiding the experiment in achieving its goals related to neutrino physics.

The High Voltage Splitter board for the JUNO SPMT system

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) in southern China is designed to study neutrinos from nuclear reactors and natural sources to address fundamental questions in neutrino physics. Achieving its goals requires continuous operation over a 20-year period. The small photomultiplier tube (small PMT or SPMT) system is a subsystem within the experiment composed of 25600 3-inch PMTs and their associated readout electronics. The High Voltage Splitter (HVS) is the first board on the readout chain of the SPMT system and services the PMTs by providing high voltage for biasing and by decoupling the generated physics signal from the high-voltage bias for readout, which is then fed to the front-end board. The necessity to handle high voltage, manage a large channel count, and operate stably for 20 years imposes significant constraints on the physical design of the HVS. This paper serves as a comprehensive documentation of the HVS board: its role in the SPMT readout system, the challenges in its design, performance and reliability metrics, and the methods employed for production and quality control.

The inherent convolution property of quantum neural networks

Quantum neural networks (QNNs) represent a pioneering intersection of quantum computing and deep learning. In this study, we unveil a fundamental convolution property inherent to QNNs, stemming from the natural parallelism of quantum gate operations on quantum states. Notably, QNNs are capable of performing a convolutional layer using a single quantum gate, whereas classical methods require 2^n basic operations. This essential property has been largely overlooked in the design of existing quantum convolutional neural networks (QCNNs), limiting their ability to capture key structural features of classical CNNs, including local connectivity, parameter sharing, and multi-channel, multi-layer architectures. To address these limitations, we propose novel QCNN architectures that explicitly harness the convolutional nature of QNNs. We validate the effectiveness of these architectures through extensive numerical experiments focused on multiclass image classification. Our findings provide deep insights into the realization of convolutional mechanisms within QNNs, marking a substantial advancement in the development of QCNNs and broadening their potential for efficient data processing.

Performance of plastic scintillator modules for top veto tracker at Taishan Antineutrino Observatory

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO) experiment incorporates a top veto tracker (TVT) system comprising 160 modules, each composed of plastic scintillator (PS) strips, embedded wavelength shifting fibers (WLS-fibers), and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). This article highlights the performance of all produced modules following the production and readout/trigger design, providing insights for scintillation detectors with WLS-fibers. Three kinds of trigger modes and its efficiency have been defined to comprehensively evaluate the performance of this unique design, which has been verified for the batch production, along with comprehensive measurement strategies and quality inspection methods. In "module" mode, the detection(tagging) efficiency of the PS exceeds 99.67\% at a 30 photoelectron threshold, and even in "AND" mode, it surpasses 99.60\% at a 15 photoelectron threshold. The muon tagging efficiency meets TAO's requirements. The production and performance of the PS module set a benchmark for other experiments, with optimized optical fiber arrangements that enhance light yield and muon detection efficiency.

GazeSwipe: Enhancing Mobile Touchscreen Reachability through Seamless Gaze and Finger-Swipe Integration

Smartphones with large screens provide users with increased display and interaction space but pose challenges in reaching certain areas with the thumb when using the device with one hand. To address this, we introduce GazeSwipe, a multimodal interaction technique that combines eye gaze with finger-swipe gestures, enabling intuitive and low-friction reach on mobile touchscreens. Specifically, we design a gaze estimation method that eliminates the need for explicit gaze calibration. Our approach also avoids the use of additional eye-tracking hardware by leveraging the smartphone's built-in front-facing camera. Considering the potential decrease in gaze accuracy without dedicated eye trackers, we use finger-swipe gestures to compensate for any inaccuracies in gaze estimation. Additionally, we introduce a user-unaware auto-calibration method that improves gaze accuracy during interaction. Through extensive experiments on smartphones and tablets, we compare our technique with various methods for touchscreen reachability and evaluate the performance of our auto-calibration strategy. The results demonstrate that our method achieves high success rates and is preferred by users. The findings also validate the effectiveness of the auto-calibration strategy.

Non-cyclic prototype of JUNO-TAO VETO water tank with 3 inch PMTs

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A Cerenkov water tank system with a thickness of 1.2 m pure water will be located around the central detector of TAO. The water tank system designed with 300 3" PMTs (SPMT) will use the same electronics as JUNO SPMT, but with online software multiplicity trigger. The performance of a Cerenkov detector with the JUNO SPMT and electronics designed for liquid scintillator detector needs to be checked, including the software triggering. The features and the long stability of the detector without water circulation also needs to be checked as a common concern and a backup option for future JUNO-TAO running. Here we will summary the integration and testing of a prototype water tank detector system, including SPMT, electronics, data taking, simulation and measurement results.

Absence of BCS-BEC Crossover in FeSe0.45Te0 55 Superconductor

In iron-based superconductor Fe(Se,Te), a flat band-like feature near the Fermi level was observed around the Brillouin zone center in the superconducting state. It is under debate whether this is the evidence on the presence of the BCS-BEC crossover in the superconductor. High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements are carried out on high quality single crystals of FeSe0.45Te0.55 superconductor to address the issue. By employing different polarization geometries, we have resolved and isolated the dyz band and the topological surface band, making it possible to study their superconducting behaviors separately. The dyz band alone does not form a flat band-like feature in the superconducting state and the measured dispersion can be well described by the BCS picture. We find that the flat band-like feature is formed from the combination of the dyz band and the topological surface state band in the superconducting state. These results reveal the origin of the flat band-like feature and rule out the presence of BCS-BEC crossover in Fe(Se,Te) superconductor.

Negligible Normal Fluid in Superconducting State of Heavily Overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ Detected by Ultra-Low Temperature Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

In high temperature cuprate superconductors, it was found that in the overdoped region the superfluid density decreases with the increase of hole doping. One natural question is whether there exists normal fluid in the superconducting state in the overdoped region. In this paper, we have carried out high-resolution ultra-low temperature laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements on a heavily overdoped Bi2212 sample with a $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of 48 K. We find that this heavily overdoped Bi2212 remains in the strong coupling regime with $2 \mathitΔ_0 / k_{\mathrm{B}} T_{\mathrm{c}}=5.8$. The single-particle scattering rate is very small along the nodal direction ($\sim$5 meV) and increases as the momentum moves from the nodal to the antinodal regions. A hard superconducting gap opening is observed near the antinodal region with the spectral weight at the Fermi level fully suppressed to zero. The normal fluid is found to be negligibly small in the superconducting state of this heavily overdoped Bi2212. These results provide key information to understand the high $T_\mathrm{c}$ mechanism in the cuprate superconductors.

Readability-guided Idiom-aware Sentence Simplification (RISS) for Chinese

Chinese sentence simplification faces challenges due to the lack of large-scale labeled parallel corpora and the prevalence of idioms. To address these challenges, we propose Readability-guided Idiom-aware Sentence Simplification (RISS), a novel framework that combines data augmentation techniques with lexcial simplification. RISS introduces two key components: (1) Readability-guided Paraphrase Selection (RPS), a method for mining high-quality sentence pairs, and (2) Idiom-aware Simplification (IAS), a model that enhances the comprehension and simplification of idiomatic expressions. By integrating RPS and IAS using multi-stage and multi-task learning strategies, RISS outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods on two Chinese sentence simplification datasets. Furthermore, RISS achieves additional improvements when fine-tuned on a small labeled dataset. Our approach demonstrates the potential for more effective and accessible Chinese text simplification.

Orbital-Dependent Electron Correlation in Double-Layer Nickelate La3Ni2O7

The latest discovery of high temperature superconductivity near 80K in La3Ni2O7 under high pressure has attracted much attention. Many proposals are put forth to understand the origin of superconductivity. The determination of electronic structures is a prerequisite to establish theories to understand superconductivity in nickelates but is still lacking. Here we report our direct measurement of the electronic structures of La3Ni2O7 by high-resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Fermi surface and band structures of La3Ni2O7 are observed and compared with the band structure calculations. Strong electron correlations are revealed which are orbital- and momentum dependent. A flat band is formed from the Ni-3dz2 orbitals around the zone corner which is ~50meV below the Fermi level and exhibits the strongest electron correlation. In many theoretical proposals, this band is expected to play the dominant role in generating superconductivity in La3Ni2O7. Our observations provide key experimental information to understand the electronic structure and origin of high temperature superconductivity in La3Ni2O7.

Design and Integration of JUNO-OSIRIS

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a neutrino detection experiment characterized by an acrylic sphere, measuring 35.4 m in diameter, containing 20,000 tons of liquid scintillator. This sphere is encompassed by as many as 17,600 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a 20-inch diameter, achieving an overall coverage of 77.9%. With these impressive capabilities, the JUNO experiment aims to achieve an exceptional effective energy resolution of 3% at 1 MeV. The Online Scintillator Internal Radioactivity Investigation System (OSIRIS) serves as a precursor detector, around 100 m aside in horizontal of the site of the JUNO detector underground, tasked with monitoring and examining the purity of the liquid scintillator prior to its transfer to the JUNO central detector. The OSIRIS, also as a pre-detector of JUNO, is constructed with a cylindrical acrylic vessel designed to hold 18 tons of liquid scintillator. It is situated within a 9-m height cylindrical tank filled with 550 tons of pure water. This detector was specifically engineered to search for the fast coincidence decays of $^{214}$Bi -$^{214}$Po and $^{212}$Bi -$^{212}$Po in the decay chains of $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th, respectively.OSIRIS has been designed to reach a sensitivity of 10$^{-16}$ g/g for U/Th to test scintillator radiopurity to the level required for the detection of solar neutrinos. Additionally, 64 20-inch microchannel plate PMTs (MCP PMTs) were positioned around the liquid scintillator vessel to observe incoming interactions, along with an additional 12 20-inch MCP PMTs for the water Cherenkov muon veto system. The OSIRIS pre-detector has been fully constructed and integrated, providing a plenty of preliminary results from the air runs. The next step in the process involves commencing the filling soon, aiming to involve an in-depth examination of the impurities within the liquid scintillator.

Dark Count of 20-inch PMTs Generated by Natural Radioactivity

The primary objective of the JUNO experiment is to determine the ordering of neutrino masses using a 20-kton liquid-scintillator detector. The 20-inch photomultiplier tube (PMT) plays a crucial role in achieving excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV. Understanding the characteristics and features of the PMT is vital for comprehending the detector's performance, particularly regarding the occurrence of large pulses in PMT dark counts. This research paper aims to further investigate the origin of these large pulses in the 20-inch PMT dark count rate through measurements and simulations. The findings confirm that the main sources of the large pulses are natural radioactivity and muons striking the PMT glass. By analyzing the PMT dark count rate spectrum, it becomes possible to roughly estimate the radioactivity levels in the surrounding environment.

A novel design for 100 meter-scale water attenuation length measurement and monitoring

Water Cherenov detector is a vital part in most of neutrino or cosmic ray research. As detectors grow in size, the water attenuation length (WAL) becomes increasingly essential for detector performance. It is essential to measure or monitor the WAL. While many experiments have measured WAL in the lab or detector, only the Super-Kamiokande experiment has achieved values exceeding 50 meters in the detector with a moving light source. However, it is impractical for many experiments to place a moving light source inside the detector, necessitating an alternative method for investigating long WAL. A novel system has been proposed to address the challenge of investigating long WAL. This system focuses on ample water Cherenkov detectors and features a fixed light source and photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) at varying distances, eliminating the need for moving parts. The static setup demands high precision for accurate measurement of long WAL. Each component, including LED, diffuse ball, PMTs, and fibers, is introduced to explain uncertainty control. Based on lab tests, the system's uncertainty has been controlled within 5\%. Additionally, camera technology is also used during the evaluation of the system uncertainty, which has the potential to replace PMTs in the future for this measurement. Monte Carlo simulations have shown that the system can achieve a 5\% measurement uncertainty at WAL of 80 meters and 8\% at WAL of 100 meters. This system can be used in experiments with large Cherenkov detectors such as JUNO water veto and Hyper-K.
