Forced Oscillation Source Location via Multivariate Time Series Classification

Precisely locating low-frequency oscillation sources is the prerequisite of suppressing sustained oscillation, which is an essential guarantee for the secure and stable operation of power grids. Using synchrophasor measurements, a machine learning method is proposed to locate the source of forced oscillation in power systems. Rotor angle and active power of each power plant are utilized to construct multivariate time series (MTS). Applying Mahalanobis distance metric and dynamic time warping, the distance between MTS with different phases or lengths can be appropriately measured. The obtained distance metric, representing characteristics during the transient phase of forced oscillation under different disturbance sources, is used for offline classifier training and online matching to locate the disturbance source. Simulation results using the four-machine two-area system and IEEE 39-bus system indicate that the proposed location method can identify the power system forced oscillation source online with high accuracy.

An Extended Kalman Filter Enhanced Hilbert-Huang Transform in Oscillation Detection

Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) has drawn great attention in power system analysis due to its capability to deal with dynamic signal and provide instantaneous characteristics such as frequency, damping, and amplitudes. However, its shortcomings, including mode mixing and end effects, are as significant as its advantages. A preliminary result of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) method to enhance HHT and hopefully to overcome these disadvantages is presented in this paper. The proposal first removes dynamic DC components in signals using empirical mode decomposition. Then an EKF model is applied to extract instant coefficients. Numerical results using simulated and real-world low-frequency oscillation data suggest the proposal can help to overcome the mode mixing and end effects with a properly chosen number of modes.

Charge puddles in the bulk and on the surface of the topological insulator BiSbTeSe$_2$ studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and optical spectroscopy

The topological insulator BiSbTeSe$_2$ corresponds to a compensated semiconductor in which strong Coulomb disorder gives rise to the formation of charge puddles, i.e., local accumulations of charge carriers, both in the bulk and on the surface. Bulk puddles are formed if the fluctuations of the Coulomb potential are as large as half of the band gap. The gapless surface, in contrast, is sensitive to small fluctuations but the potential is strongly suppressed due to the additional screening channel provided by metallic surface carriers. To study the quantitative relationship between the properties of bulk puddles and surface puddles, we performed infrared transmittance measurements as well as scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on the same sample of BiSbTeSe$_2$, which is close to perfect compensation. At 5.5 K, we find surface potential fluctuations occurring on a length scale $r_s = 40-50$ nm with amplitude $Γ= 8-14$ meV which is much smaller than in the bulk, where optical measurements detect the formation of bulk puddles. In this nominally undoped compound, the value of $Γ$ is smaller than expected for pure screening by surface carriers, and we argue that this arises most likely from a cooperative effect of bulk screening and surface screening.

Online Coherence Identification Using Dynamic Time Warping for Controlled Islanding

Controlled islanding is considered to be the last countermeasure to prevent system-wide blackouts in case of cascading failures. It splits the system into self-sustained islands to maintain transient stability at the expense of possible loss of load. Generator coherence identification is critical to controlled islanding scheme as it helps identify the optimal cut-set to maintain system transient stability. This paper presents a novel approach for online generator coherency identification using phasor measurement unit (PMU) data and dynamic time warping (DTW). Results from the coherence identification are used to further cluster non-generator buses using spectral clustering with the objective of minimizing power flow disruption. The proposed approach is validated and compared to existing methods on the IEEE 39-bus system, through which its advantages are demonstrated.

Two-Bus Holomorphic Embedding Method-based Equivalents and Weak-Bus Determination

A new method of solving the power-flow problem, the holomorphically embedded load-flow method (HELM) is theoretically guaranteed to find the high-voltage solution, if one exists, up to the saddle-node bifurcation point (SNBP), provided sufficient precision is used and the conditions of Stahls theorem are satisfied. Sigma indices, have been proposed as estimators of the distance from the present operating point to the SNBP, and indicators of the weak buses in a system. In this paper, it is shown that the sigma condition proposed in [2] will not produce reliable results and that a modified requirement can be used to produce a tight upper bound on the SNBP. Introduced is an approach to estimate the weak buses in the system using the HEM power series with numerical results compared to traditional modal analysis for a 14-bus system.

Economic Power Capacity Design of Distributed Energy Resources for Reliable Community Microgrids

Community microgrids are developed within existing power systems by integrating local distributed energy resources (DERs). So power distribution systems can be seamlessly partitioned into community microgrids and end-users could be largely supported when an extreme event happens. However, because of DERs low inertia, their power capacity should be well designed to cover unexpected events and guarantee system reliability. This paper presents a quantitative and qualitative combined methodology for DERs selection, and an economic approach to meet the system reliability requirements. Discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are employed to obtain the optimal solution, with consideration of load demand and renewable generation uncertainties. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is conducted to show how DERs' capacity design is impacted by counted portion of the forecasted renewable generation.

Bilevel Optimization Based Transmission Expansion Planning Considering Phase Shifting Transformer

In this paper, the phase shifting transformer (PST) is introduced in the Transmission Expansion Planning (TEP) problem considering significant wind power integration. The proposed planning model is formulated as a bilevel program which seeks to determine the optimal strategy for the network reinforcements and the PST locations. The objective of the upper level problem is to minimize the total consumer payment, the investment cost on transmission line and PST. The lower level problems designate the electricity market clearing conditions under different load-wind scenarios. The bilevel model is transformed into a single level mixed integer linear program (MILP) by replacing each lower level problem with its primal-dual formulation. The numerical case studies based on IEEE 24-bus system demonstrate the characteristics of the proposed model. Moreover, the simulation results show that the installation of PST adds flexibility to the TEP and facilitates the integration of wind power.

Distributed Estimation of Oscillations in Power Systems: an Extended Kalman Filtering Approach

Online estimation of electromechanical oscillation parameters provides essential information to prevent system instability and blackout and helps to identify event categories and locations. We formulate the problem as a state space model and employ the extended Kalman filter to estimate oscillation frequencies and damping factors directly based on data from phasor measurement units. Due to considerations of communication burdens and privacy concerns, a fully distributed algorithm is proposed using diffusion extended Kalman filter. The effectiveness of proposed algorithms is confirmed by both simulated and real data collected during events in State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company.

A Distributed Cooperative Control Framework for Synchronized Reconnection of a Multi-Bus Microgrid

One critical value microgrids bring to power systems is resilience, the capability of being able to island from the main grid under certain conditions and connect back when necessary. Once islanded, a microgrid must be synchronized to the main grid before reconnection to prevent severe consequences. In general, synchronization of a single machine with the grid can be easily achieved using a synchronizer. The problem becomes more challenging when it comes to a multi-bus microgrid with multiple distributed generators (DGs) and dispersed loads. All distributed generators need to be properly controlled in a coordinated way to achieve synchronization. This paper presents a novel bi-level distributed cooperative control framework for a multi-bus microgrid. In this framework, DGs work collaboratively in a distributed manner using the minimum and sparse communication. The topology of the communication network can be flexible which supports the plug-and-play feature of microgrids. Fast and deterministic synchronization can be achieved with tolerance to communication latency. Experimental results obtained from Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

PMU Assisted Power System Parameter Calibration at Jiangsu Electric Power Company

An online PMU-assisted Power System Parameter Calibration System (PSPCS) was recently developed and implemented at State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company (JEPC). PSPCS leverages high-resolution PMU data and data mining techniques to perform online screening of the EMS and Production Management System (PMS) databases for data cleaning, model validation, and parameter calibration. PSPCS calculates transmission line and generator parameters on a regular real-time basis and compares the results with databases to identify record(s) with significant discrepancy, if any. Once consistent discrepancy is observed, the system will raise a flag and further investigation will be initiated, including a novel density-based spatial clustering procedure for parameter/data calibration. A novel metric is proposed to quantify the credibility of PMU-based parameter identification. This paper discusses the proposed methodologies, challenges, as well as implementation issues identified during the development and deployment of PSPCS.

Sur les plus grands facteurs premiers d'entiers consécutifs

Let $P^+(n)$ denote the largest prime factor of the integer $n$ and $P_y^+(n)$ denote the largest prime factor $p$ of $n$ which satisfies $p\leqslant y$. In this paper, firstly we show that the triple consecutive integers with the two patterns $P^+(n-1)>P^+(n) P^+(n+1)$ have a positive proportion respectively. More generally, with the same methods we can prove that for any $J\in \mathbb{Z}, J\geqslant3$, the $J-$tuple consecutive integers with the two patterns $P^+(n+j_0)= \min\limits_{0\leqslant j\leqslant J-1}P^+(n+j)$ and $P^+(n+j_0)= \max\limits_{0\leqslant j\leqslant J-1}P^+(n+j)$ also have a positive proportion respectively. Secondly for $y=x^θ$ with $0<θ\leqslant 1$ we show that there exists a positive proportion of integers $n$ such that $P_y^+(n)<P_y^+(n+1)$. Specially, we can prove that the proportion of integers $n$ such that $P^+(n)<P^+(n+1)$ is larger than 0.1356, which improves the previous result "0.1063" of the author.

Online Calibration of Phasor Measurement Unit Using Density-Based Spatial Clustering

Data quality of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is receiving increasing attention as it has been identified as one of the limiting factors that affect many wide-area measurement system (WAMS) based applications. In general, existing PMU calibration methods include offline testing and model based approaches. However, in practice, the effectiveness of both is limited due to the very strong assumptions employed. This paper presents a novel framework for online bias error detection and calibration of PMU measurement using density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) based on much relaxed assumptions. With a new problem formulation, the proposed data mining based methodology is applicable across a wide spectrum of practical conditions and one side-product of it is more accurate transmission line parameters for EMS database and protective relay settings. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Gigantic negative magnetoresistance in a disordered topological insulator

With the recent discovery of Weyl semimetals, the phenomenon of negative magnetoresistance (MR) is attracting renewed interest. While small negative MR can occur due to the suppression of spin scattering or weak localization, large negative MR is rare in materials, and when it happens, it is usually related to magnetism. The large negative MR in Weyl semimetals is peculiar in that it is unrelated to magnetism and comes from chiral anomaly. Here we report that there is a new mechanism for large negative MR which is not related to magnetism but is related to disorder. In the newly-synthesized bulk-insulating topological insulator TlBi$_{0.15}$Sb$_{0.85}$Te$_2$, we observed gigantic negative MR reaching 98% in 14 T at 10 K, which is unprecedented in a nonmagnetic system. Supported by numerical simulations, we argue that this phenomenon is likely due to the Zeeman effect on a barely percolating current path formed in the disordered bulk. Since disorder can also lead to non-saturating linear MR in Ag$_{2+δ}$Se, the present finding suggests that disorder engineering in narrow-gap systems is useful for realizing gigantic MR in both positive and negative directions.

Optimal Allocation of Static Var Compensator via Mixed Integer Conic Programming

Shunt FACTS devices, such as, a Static Var Compensator (SVC), are capable of providing local reactive power compensation. They are widely used in the network to reduce the real power loss and improve the voltage profile. This paper proposes a planning model based on mixed integer conic programming (MICP) to optimally allocate SVCs in the transmission network considering load uncertainty. The load uncertainties are represented by a number of scenarios. Reformulation and linearization techniques are utilized to transform the original non-convex model into a convex second order cone programming (SOCP) model. Numerical case studies based on the IEEE 30-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed planning model.

Thermodynamic evidence for nematic superconductivity in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$

Unconventional superconductivity is characterized by the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the macroscopic superconducting wavefunction in addition to the gauge symmetry breaking, such as rotational-symmetry breaking with respect to the underlying crystal-lattice symmetry. Particularly, superconductivity with spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking in the wavefunction amplitude and thus in bulk properties, not yet reported previously, is intriguing and can be termed "nematic" superconductivity in analogy to nematic liquid-crystal phases. Here, based on specific-heat measurements of the single-crystalline Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ under accurate magnetic-field-direction control, we report thermodynamic evidence for nematic superconductivity, namely, clear two-fold-symmetric behavior in a trigonal lattice. The results indicate realization of an "odd-parity nematic" state, feasible only by macroscopic quantum condensates and distinct from nematic states in liquid crystals. The results also confirm topologically non-trivial superconductivity in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$.

Metal-insulator transition and tunable Dirac-cone surface state in the topological insulator TlBi1-xSbxTe2 studied by angle-resolved photoemission

We report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on topological insulator (TI) TlBi1-xSbxTe2 which is bulk insulating at 0.5 < x < 0.9 and undergoes a metal-insulator-metal transition with the Sb content x. We found that this transition is characterized by a systematic hole doping with increasing x, which results in the Fermi-level crossings of the bulk conduction and valence bands at x~ 0 and x~1, respectively. The Dirac point of the topological surface state is gradually isolated from the valence-band edge, accompanied by a sign reversal of Dirac carriers. We also found that the Dirac velocity is the largest among known solid-solution TI systems. The TlBi1-xSbxTe2 system thus provides an excellent platform for Dirac-cone engineering and device applications of TIs.

Superconductivity in Tl_{0.6}Bi_{2}Te_{3} Derived from a Topological Insulator

Bulk superconductivity has been discovered in Tl_{0.6}Bi_{2}Te_{3}, which is derived from the topological insulator Bi2Te3. The superconducting volume fraction of up to 95% (determined from specific heat) with Tc of 2.28 K was observed. The carriers are p-type with the density of ~1.8 x 10^{20} cm^{-3}. Resistive transitions under magnetic fields point to an unconventional temperature dependence of the upper critical field B_{c2}. The crystal structure appears to be unchanged from Bi2Te3 with a shorter c-lattice parameter, which, together with the Rietveld analysis, suggests that Tl ions are incorporated but not intercalated. This material is an interesting candidate of a topological superconductor which may be realized by the strong spin-orbit coupling inherent to topological insulators.

Direct Observation of Nonequivalent Fermi-Arc States of Opposite Surfaces in Noncentrosymmetric Weyl Semimetal NbP

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal candidate NbP, and determined the electronic states of both Nb- and P-terminated surfaces corresponding to the "opposite" surfaces of a polar crystal. We revealed a drastic difference in the Fermi-surface topology between the opposite surfaces, whereas the Fermi arcs on both surfaces are likely terminated at the surface projection of the same bulk Weyl nodes. Comparison of the ARPES data with our first-principles band calculations suggests notable difference in electronic structure at the Nb-terminated surface between theory and experiment. The present result opens a platform for realizing exotic quantum phenomena arising from unusual surface properties of Weyl semimetals.
