Unusual double-peak specific heat and spin freezing in a spin-2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$

We report the properties of a triangular lattice iron-chalcogenide antiferromagnet FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$. The spin susceptibility reveals a significant antiferromagnetic interaction with a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ ~ -200K and a spin-2 local moment. Despite a large spin and a large |Θ$_{CW}$|, the low-temperature behaviors are incompatible with conventional classical magnets. No long-range order is detected down to 0.4K. Similar to the well-known spin-1 magnet NiGa$_{2}$S$_{4}$, the specific heat of FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$ exhibits an unusual double-peak structure and a T$^{2}$ power law at low temperatures, which are attributed to the underlying quadrupolar spin correlations and the Halperin-Saslow modes, respectively. The spin freezing occurs at ~ 14K, below which the relaxation dynamics is probed by the ac susceptibility. Our results are consistent with the early theory for the spin-1 system with Heisenberg and biquadratic spin interactions. We argue that the early proposal of the quadrupolar correlation and gauge glass dynamics may be well extended to FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$. Our results provide useful insights about the magnetic properties of frustrated quantum magnets with high spins.

Superconducting proximity effect in a topological insulator using Fe(Te,Se)

Interest in the superconducting proximity effect has recently been reignited by theoretical predictions that it could be used to achieve topological superconductivity. Low-T$_{c}$ superconductors have predominantly been used in this effort, but small energy scales of ~1 meV have hindered the characterization of the emergent electronic phase, limiting it to extremely low temperatures. In this work, we use molecular beam epitaxy to grow topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ in a range of thicknesses on top of a high-T$_{c}$ superconductor Fe(Te,Se). Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we detect Δ$_{ind}$ as high as ~3.5 meV, which is the largest reported gap induced by proximity to an s-wave superconductor to-date. We find that Δ$_{ind}$ decays with Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thickness, but remains finite even after the topological surface states had been formed. Finally, by imaging the scattering and interference of surface state electrons, we provide a microscopic visualization of the fully gaped Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ surface state due to Cooper pairing. Our results establish Fe-based high-T$_{c}$ superconductors as a promising new platform for realizing high-T$_{c}$ topological superconductivity.

Antiferromagnetic Chern insulators in non-centrosymmetric systems

We investigate a new class of topological antiferromagnetic (AF) Chern insulators driven by electronic interactions in two-dimensional systems without inversion symmetry. Despite the absence of a net magnetization, AF Chern insulators (AFCI) possess a nonzero Chern number $C$ and exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Their existence is guaranteed by the bifurcation of the boundary line of Weyl points between a quantum spin Hall insulator and a topologically trivial phase with the emergence of AF long-range order. As a concrete example, we study the phase structure of the honeycomb lattice Kane-Mele model as a function of the inversion-breaking ionic potential and the Hubbard interaction. We find an easy $z$-axis $C=1$ AFCI phase and a spin-flop transition to a topologically trivial $xy$-plane collinear antiferromagnet. We propose experimental realizations of the AFCI and QAHE in correlated electron materials and cold atom systems.

Correlation effects and hidden spin-orbit entangled electronic order in parent and electron-doped iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Analogs of the high-T$_c$ cuprates have been long sought after in transition metal oxides. Due to the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the $5d$ perovskite iridates Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ exhibit a low-energy electronic structure remarkably similar to the cuprates. Whether a superconducting state exists as in the cuprates requires understanding the correlated spin-orbit entangled electronic states. Recent experiments discovered hidden order in the parent and electron doped iridates, some with striking analogies to the cuprates, including Fermi surface pockets, Fermi arcs, and pseudogap. Here, we study the correlation and disorder effects in a five-orbital model derived from the band theory. We find that the experimental observations are consistent with a $d$-wave spin-orbit density wave order that breaks the symmetry of a joint two-fold spin-orbital rotation followed by a lattice translation. There is a Berry phase and a plaquette spin flux due to spin procession as electrons hop between Ir atoms, akin to the intersite SOC in quantum spin Hall insulators. The associated staggered circulating $J_\text{eff}=1/2$ spin current can be probed by advanced techniques of spin-current detection in spintronics. This electronic order can emerge spontaneously from the intersite Coulomb interactions between the spatially extended iridium $5d$ orbitals, turning the metallic state into an electron doped quasi-2D Dirac semimetal with important implications on the possible superconducting state suggested by recent experiments.

Robust short-range-ordered nematicity in FeSe evidenced by high-pressure NMR

We report high-pressure $^{77}$Se NMR studies on FeSe single crystals that reveal a prominent inhomogeneous NMR linewidth broadening upon cooling, with the magnetic field applied along the tetragonal [110] direction. The data indicate the existence of short-range-ordered, inhomogeneous electronic nematicity, which has surprisingly long time scales over milliseconds. The short-range order survives temperatures up to $8$ times the structural transition temperature, and remains robust against pressure, in contrast to the strong pressure-dependence of the orbital ordering, structural transition, and the ground state magnetism. Such an extended region of static nematicity in the ($P$,$T$) space of FeSe indicates an enormously large fluctuating regime, and provide fresh insights and constraints to the understanding of electronic nematicity in iron-based superconductors.

Two-dimensional topological superconducting phases emerged from d-wave superconductors in proximity to antiferromagnets

Motivated by the recent observations of nodeless superconductivity in the monolayer CuO$_{2}$ grown on the Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ substrates, we study the two-dimensional superconducting (SC) phases described by the two-dimensional $t$-$J$ model in proximity to an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator. We found that (i) the nodal d-wave SC state can be driven via a continuous transition into a nodeless d-wave pairing state by the proximity induced AF field. (ii) The energetically favorable pairing states in the strong field regime have extended s-wave symmetry and can be nodal or nodeless. (iii) Between the pure d-wave and s-wave paired phases, there emerge two topologically distinct SC phases with ($s+$i$d$) symmetry, i.e., the weak and strong pairing phases, and the weak pairing phase is found to be a $Z_{2}$ topological superconductor protected by valley symmetry, exhibiting robust gapless non-chiral edge modes. These findings strongly suggest that the high-$T_{c}$ superconductors in proximity to antiferromagnets can realize fully gapped symmetry protected topological SC.

Doublon-holon binding as origin of Mott transition and fractionalized spin liquid -- Asymptotic solution of the Hubbard model in the limit of large coordination

An analytical solution of the Mott transition is obtained for the Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice in the large coordination number ($z$) limit. The excitonic binding of doublons (doubly occupied sites) and holons (empty sites) is shown to be the origin of a continuous Mott transition between a metal and an emergent quantum spin liquid insulator. The doublon-holon binding theory enables a different large-$z$ limit and a different phase structure than the dynamical meanfield theory by allowing intersite spinon correlations to lift the $2^N$-fold degeneracy of the local moments in the insulating phase. We show that the spinons are coupled to doublons/holons by a dissipative compact U(1) gauge field that is in the deconfined phase, stabilizing the spin-charge separated gapless spin liquid Mott insulator.

Interatomic Coulomb interaction and electron nematic bond order in FeSe

Despite having the simplest atomic structure, bulk FeSe has an observed electronic structure with the largest deviation from the band theory predictions among all Fe-based superconductors and exhibits a low temperature nematic electronic state without intervening magnetic order. We show that the Fe-Fe interatomic Coulomb repulsion $V$ offers a natural explanation for the puzzling electron correlation effects in FeSe superconductors. It produces a strongly renormalized low-energy band structure where the van Hove singularity sits remarkably close to Fermi level in the high-temperature electron liquid phase as observed experimentally. This proximity enables the quantum fluctuations in $V$ to induce a rotational symmetry breaking electronic bond order in the $d$-wave channel. We argue that this emergent low-temperature $d$-wave bond nematic state, different from the commonly discussed ferro-orbital order and spin-nematicity, has been observed recently by several angle resolved photoemission experiments detecting the lifting of the band degeneracies at high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. We present a symmetry analysis of the space group and identify the hidden antiunitary $T$-symmetry that protects the band degeneracy and the electronic order/interaction that can break the symmetry and lift the degeneracy. We show that the $d$-wave nematic bond order, together with the spin-orbit coupling, provide a unique explanation of the temperature dependence, momentum space anisotropy, and domain effects observed experimentally. We discuss the implications of our findings on the structural transition, the absence of magnetic order, and the intricate competition between nematicity and superconductivity in FeSe superconductors.

Parallel Stitching of Two-Dimensional Materials

Diverse parallel stitched two-dimensional heterostructures are synthesized, including metal-semiconductor (graphene-MoS2), semiconductor-semiconductor (WS2-MoS2), and insulator-semiconductor (hBN-MoS2), directly through selective sowing of aromatic molecules as the seeds in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Our methodology enables the large-scale fabrication of lateral heterostructures with arbitrary patterns, and clean and precisely aligned interfaces, which offers tremendous potential for its application in integrated circuits.

Disorder and metal-insulator transitions in Weyl semimetals

The Weyl semimetal (WSM) is a newly proposed quantum state of matter. It has Weyl nodes in bulk excitations and Fermi arcs surface states. We study the effects of disorder and localization in WSMs and find three exotic phase transitions. (I) Two Weyl nodes near the Brillouin zone boundary can be annihilated pairwise by disorder scattering, resulting in the opening of a topologically nontrivial gap and a transition from a WSM to a three-dimensional (3D) quantum anomalous Hall state. (II) When the two Weyl nodes are well separated in momentum space, the emergent bulk extended states can give rise to a direct transition from a WSM to a 3D diffusive anomalous Hall metal. (III) Two Weyl nodes can emerge near the zone center when an insulating gap closes with increasing disorder, enabling a direct transition from a normal band insulator to a WSM. We determine the phase diagram by numerically computing the localization length and the Hall conductivity, and propose that the exotic phase transitions can be realized on a photonic lattice.

Tunable Anderson metal-insulator transition in quantum-spin Hall insulators

We numerically study disorder effects in Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang (BHZ) model, and find that Anderson transition of quantum spin-Hall insulator (QSHI) is determined by model parameters. The BHZ Hamiltonian is equivalent to two decoupled spin blocks that belong to the unitary class. In contrast to the common belief that a two-dimensional unitary system scales to an insulator except at certain critical points, we find, through calculations scaling properties of the localization length, level statistics, and participation ratio, that a possible exotic metallic phase emerges between a QSHI and a normal insulator phases in InAs/GaSb-type BHZ model. On the other hand, direct transition from a QSHI to a normal insulator is found in HgTe/CdTe-type BHZ model. Furthermore, we show that the metallic phase originates from the Berry phase and can survive both inside and outside the gap.

Chiral spin density wave order on frustrated honeycomb and bilayer triangle lattice Hubbard model at half-filling

We study the Hubbard model on the frustrated honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor $t_1$ and second nearest-neighbor hopping $t_2$, which is isomorphic to the bilayer triangle lattice, using the SU(2)-invariant slave boson theory. We show that the Coulomb interaction $U$ induces antiferromagnetic (AF) chiral spin-density wave ($χ$-SDW) order in a wide range of $κ=t_2/t_1$ where both the two-sublattice AF order at small $κ$ and the decoupled three-sublattice 120$^\circ$ order at large $κ$ are strongly frustrated, leading to three distinct phases with different anomalous Hall responses. We find a continuous transition from a $χ$-SDW semimetal with anomalous Hall effect to a topological chiral Chern insulator exhibiting quantum anomalous Hall effect, followed by a discontinuous transition to a $χ$-SDW insulator with zero total Chern number but anomalous ac Hall effect. The $χ$-SDW is likely a generic phase of strongly correlated and highly frustrated hexagonal lattice electrons.

Nanoscale Determination of the Mass Enhancement Factor in the Lightly-Doped Bulk Insulator Lead Selenide

Bismuth chalcogenides and lead telluride/selenide alloys exhibit exceptional thermoelectric properties which could be harnessed for power generation and device applications. Since phonons play a significant role in achieving these desired properties, quantifying the interaction between phonons and electrons, which is encoded in the Eliashberg function of a material, is of immense importance. However, its precise extraction has in part been limited due to the lack of local experimental probes. Here we construct a method to directly extract the Eliashberg function using Landau level spectroscopy, and demonstrate its applicability to lightly-doped thermoelectric bulk insulator PbSe. In addition to its high energy resolution only limited by thermal broadening, this novel experimental method could be used to detect variations in mass enhancement factor at the nanoscale. As such, it opens up a new pathway for investigating the effects of chemical defects, surface doping and strain on the mass enhancement factor.

Textured electronic states of the triangular lattice Hubbard model and Na$_x$CoO$_2$

We show that geometric frustration and strong correlation in the triangular lattice Hubbard model lead a rich and novel phase structure of $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ spin-charge textured electronic states over a wide region of electron doping $0\le x \le 0.40$. In addition to the 120$^\circ$ Néel ordered insulator at half-filling, we found a novel spin-charge ordered insulator at $x=1/3$ with collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order on the underlying unfrustrated honeycomb lattice. Separating the two insulating phases is a Lifshitz transition between a noncollinear AF ordered metal and one with coexisting charge order. We obtain the phase diagram and the evolution of the Fermi surface (FS). Remarkably, the correlated ground states near $x=1/3$ emerges as doping the "1/3 AF insulator" by excess carriers, leading to electron and hole FS pockets with important implications for the cobaltate superconducting state.

Distinct-symmetry spin liquid states and phase diagram of Kitaev-Hubbard model

We report the finding of a series of symmetry distinct spin liquid (SL) states and a rich phase diagram in a half-filled honeycomb lattice Hubbard model with spin-dependent hopping amplitude t'. We first study the magnetic instability of the system and find two antiferromagnetic orders beyond a critical Hubbard U which increases with the ratio t'/t . For $t'$ approaching to $t$, the semimetal (SM) transforms to a U(1) SL and then to the Kitaev Z_2 SL as U increases. In a wide middle range of t'/t, the latter is replaced by a U(1) SL to $SU(2)$ SL transition. The physical properties of the stable SL phases are discussed.

Effects of dipole-dipole interaction between cigar-shaped BECs of cold alkali atoms: Towards inverse-squared interactions

We show that the dipole-dipole coupling between Wannier modes in cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is significantly enhanced while the short-range coupling strongly suppressed. As a result, the dipole-dipole interaction can become the dominant interaction between ultracold alkali Bose atoms. In the long length limit of a cigar-shaped BEC, the resulting effective one-dimensional models possess an effective inverse squared interacting potential, the Calogero-Sutherland potential, which plays a fundamental role in many fields of contemporary physics; but its direct experimental realization has been a challenge for a long time. We propose to realize the Calogero-Sutherland model in ultracold alkali Bose atoms and study the effects of the dipole-dipole interaction.

The evolution of antiferromagnetic susceptibility to uniaxial pressure in Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2

Neutron diffraction measurements are presented measuring the responses of both magnetic and structural order parameters of parent and lightly Co-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 under the application of uniaxial pressure. We find that the uniaxial pressure induces a thermal shift in the onset of antiferromagnetic order that grows as a percentage of T_N as Co-doping is increased and the superconducting phase is approached. Additionally, as uniaxial pressure is increased within parent and lightly-doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 on the first order side of the tricritical point, we observe a decoupling between the onsets of the orthorhombic structural distortion and antiferromagnetism. Our findings place needed constraints on models exploring the nematic susceptibility of the bilayer pnictides in the tetragonal, paramagnetic regime.

Doublon-holon binding, Mott transition, and fractionalized antiferromagnet in the Hubbard model

We argue that the binding between doubly occupied (doublon) and empty (holon) sites governs the incoherent excitations and plays a key role in the Mott transition in strongly correlated Mott-Hubbard systems. We construct a new saddle point solution with doublon-holon binding in the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson functional integral formulation of the Hubbard model. On the half-filled honeycomb lattice and square lattice, the ground state is found to exhibit a continuous transition from the paramagnetic semimetal/metal to an antiferromagnetic ordered Slater insulator with coherent quasiparticles at $U_{c1}$, followed by a Mott transition into an electron-fractionalized AF$^*$ phase without coherent excitations at $U_{c2}$. Such a phase structure appears generic of bipartite lattices without frustration. We show that doublon-holon binding unites the three important ideas of strong correlation: the coherent quasiparticles, the incoherent Hubbard bands, and the deconfined Mott insulator.
