Proton-Number Fluctuations in $^{238}$U+$^{238}$U Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.1$ GeV with the CEE Fast Simulation

Abstract

The Cooling Storage Ring External-target Experiment (CEE) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) offers a unique opportunity to map the QCD phase diagram in the high-baryon-density region. In particular, higher-order cumulants ($C_r$) of event-by-event proton number distributions have been proposed as sensitive probes of the nuclear-matter phase structure. In this work, $^{\text{238}}$U+$^{\text{238}}$U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 2.1$ GeV are generated using the JAM2 model and then processed through the CEE fast simulation with detector responses. Experimental analysis procedures, including centrality determination and particle identification, are also implemented. Proton-number cumulants up to fourth order and their ratios are calculated and compared with the true values. A track-by-track efficiency correction method is tested by introducing reconstruction efficiency within the TPC acceptance. An additional factor is also included to account for acceptance losses caused by the azimuthal gap between the two TPCs. Within the uncertainties of the current data sample, the corrected cumulants and cumulant ratios are consistent with their generator-level values. The event-sample dependence of the cumulant-ratio uncertainties is further investigated to estimate the statistics required for future measurements, revealing a substantial statistical cost associated with the acceptance compensation. These results provide a simulation-based assessment of the analysis feasibility and statistical requirements for proton-number fluctuation measurements at CEE.

Short-range correlated pair formation and nuclear shell structure

Short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs, caused by brief, high-momentum interactions between two nucleons, are dominated by neutron-proton pairs with large relative and smaller center-of-mass momenta. However, which nucleons form pairs is not fully understood. Measurements of 40,48Ca and 54Fe showed that intra-shell pairing was much stronger than inter-shell pairing. We measured high- missing-momentum protons knocked out in electron scattering from selected nuclei with a range of shell configurations, A, and N/Z, including 9Be, 10,11B, 12C, 40,48Ca, 54Fe, and 197Au, focusing on the four light nuclei. Unexpectedly, we found that adding one proton to 9Be (to make 10B) increased the number of correlated protons far more than adding one neutron to 10B or adding one proton to 11B, perhaps due to the large spin (J = 3) of 10B or the unusual structure of 9Be. In addition, the increase in pairing probability from 9Be to 12C and from 40Ca to 54Fe was much steeper than the increase from 9Be to 197Au. This shows the importance of low-momentum nuclear structure on the probability of high-momentum nucleon pairing.

Unexpectedly large violation of isospin symmetry in nucleus-nucleus collisions at CERN SPS energies

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS reports an unexpectedly large excess in the inclusive production of charged over neutral kaons in 0-10% central Ar+Sc collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=8.8$ and 11.9 GeV. This effect corresponds to an unexpectedly large violation of isospin symmetry, that cannot be explained by known mechanisms contained in the present theoretical models. The comparison of the NA61/SHINE results to data from other experiments reveals, within sizeable uncertainties, a consistent isospin symmetry-violating excess of charged kaon production in the energy regime $2.6<\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}<200$ GeV. At LHC energies ($0.9<\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}<13$ TeV) the charged-over-neutral kaon ratio appears consistent with unity, but the uncertainties remain sizeable. A similar excess of charged over neutral kaon yields is observed by NA61/SHINE in minimum bias $π^-$+C reactions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=17.3$ and 25.7 GeV, also in disagreement with model predictions. No clear theoretical explanation of these phenomena has been provided so far. An unexpectedly large violation of isospin symmetry brings potential heavy consequences for our understanding of particle production, and calls for a concentrated experimental and theoretical effort.

Letter of Intent for Alpha Knockout from Nuclei in Hard Exclusive Processes with ALERT

We propose to measure hard exclusive $α$-knockout reactions from the light $α$-conjugate nuclei $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$Ne using electron scattering. Three reaction channels will be measured for the first time on the same target set: (i) the quasi-elastic knockout $(e, e' α)$ knockout, which establishes a baseline against $α$-clustering model calculations and tests final-state-interaction (FSI) models; (ii) coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) on a bound $α$, which provides a quark-level probe of the bound system through the beam-spin asymmetry; and (iii) coherent vector-meson production ($ϕ$ and J/{$ψ$}) on a bound $α$, which probes the gluon distribution of the bound cluster through two-gluon exchange. The central observables are ratios of cross sections and beam-spin asymmetries between the bound $α$ in $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$ Ne and the free $^4$He ground state. Together these measurements directly address the question of the role of QCD in the structure of light nuclei : do the quark and gluon distributions of an $α$ embedded in a heavier nucleus differ from those of a free 4He, and do those modifications track the increasing $α$-clustering strength along the $α$-conjugate chain? The measurement will use the 12 GeV CEBAF accelerator in Hall B with the CLAS12 spectrometer instrumented with the ALERT low-energy recoil detector and high-pressure gas straw targets. ALERT, which replaced the CLAS12 silicon vertex tracker, was successfully commissioned and operated during Run Group L (RG-L) from April through August 2025. It uniquely provides identification of low-momentum recoiling light ions (p, d, t, $^3$He, and $^4$He) close to the beamline at the high luminosities required by these exclusive channels.
