Boundedness and continuity of phase-corrected gradients on Sobolev spaces

Abstract

For a function $ψ: \mathbb{R}^d \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$, we define the phase-corrected gradient $\nabla_{\!\circ} ψ= |ψ|^{-1} \overlineψ\,\nablaψ$ and study the regularity of the map $ψ\mapsto \nabla_{\!\circ} ψ$ on Sobolev spaces. Since $\mathrm{Re}[\nabla_{\!\circ} ψ] = \nabla |ψ|$, the phase-corrected gradient fits naturally into the framework of nonlinear composition operators. Its imaginary part $Λ= \mathrm{Im}[\nabla_{\!\circ} ψ]$, on the other hand, plays a key role in quantum hydrodynamic models. We prove that $ψ\mapsto \nabla_{\!\circ} ψ$ is bounded and continuous from $W^{s,2}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $W^{s-1,2}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $1 \leq s < \frac32$, and we show that the threshold $s = \frac32$ is sharp. In particular, this answers an open question concerning the continuity of the map $ψ\mapsto |ψ|$ on Sobolev spaces. We also show that our results remain valid for functions that do not necessarily decay at infinity, a relevant setting in the context of Ginzburg--Landau theory. Finally, we extend our analysis to more general phase-corrected gradients of the form $f(|ψ|^{-1} ψ) \nabla ψ$, where $f: \mathbb{S}^1 \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ is Lipschitz, and discuss implications for certain parabolic PDEs.

Morse theory methods for a class of quasi-linear elliptic systems of higher order

We develop the local Morse theory for a class of non-twice continuously differentiable functionals on Hilbert spaces, including a new generalization of the Gromoll-Meyer's splitting theorem and a weaker Marino-Prodi perturbation type result. They are applicable to a wide range of multiple integrals with quasi-linear elliptic Euler equations and systems of higher order.

Group-Frames for Banach Spaces

In the literature, frames generated by unitary representations of groups (known as group-frames) have been studied only for Hilbert spaces. We conduct the first study of frames for Banach spaces generated by isometrically invertible representations of discrete groups on Banach spaces. These frames are characterized using left-regular and right-regular representations, Gram matrices, and group matrices on classical sequence spaces. A sufficiently large collection of functional-vector pairs using the double commutant of the representation is identified to generate group-frames for Banach spaces. Subsequently, we study Schauder frames generated by time-frequency shift operators on finite-dimensional Banach spaces. We derive the Moyal formula, the fundamental identity of Gabor analysis, the Wexler-Raz criterion, and the Ron-Shen duality in functional form.

A Complex Geometric Approach to the Discrete Gabor Transform and Localization Operators on the Flat Torus

In a recent paper, the discrete Gabor transform was connected to a Gabor transform with a time frequency domain given by the flat torus. We show that the corresponding Bargmann-Fock spaces can be expressed as theta functions (or equivalently line bundles on Abelian varieties). We give applications of this viewpoint to frame results for the discrete Gabor transform. In particular, we get necessary conditions which hold in higher dimensions and can expand the known results in the one dimensional case, the primary tool being the theorem of the square. We also give an application to asymptotics of restriction operators which arises via the asymptotic behavior of Bergman kernels and Toeplitz operators for high tensor powers of line bundles and find that discrete time frequency restriction operators will exhibit "plunge" behaviors similar to those of time frequency restriction operators in other contexts.
