Observation of Electronic Modes in Open Cavity Resonator

The resemblance between electrons and optical waves has strongly driven the advancement of mesoscopic physics. However, electron waves have yet to be understood in open cavity structures which have provided contemporary optics with rich insight towards non-Hermitian systems and complex interactions between resonance mode. Here, we report the realization of an open cavity resonator in a two-dimensional electronic system. We studied the resonant electron modes within the cavity and resolved the signatures of longitudinal and transverse quantization, showing that the modes are robust despite the openness of the cavity being highly open to the background continuum. The transverse modes were investigated by applying a controlled deformation to the cavity, and their spatial distributions were further analyzed using magnetoconductance measurements and numerical simulation. These results lay the groundwork to exploring electronic wavefunctions in the context of modern optical systems, such as the dielectric microcavity.

Robust Interlayer-Coherent Quantum Hall States in Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We introduce a novel two-dimensional electronic system with ultrastrong interlayer interactions, namely twisted bilayer graphene with a large twist angle, as an ideal ground for realizing interlayer-coherent excitonic condensates. In these systems, subnanometer atomic separation between the layers allows significant interlayer interactions, while interlayer electron tunneling is geometrically suppressed due to the large twist angle. By fully exploiting these two features we demonstrate that a sequence of odd-integer quantum Hall states with interlayer coherence appears at the second Landau level (N = 1). Notably the energy gaps for these states are of order 1 K, which is several orders of magnitude greater than those in GaAs. Furthermore, a variety of quantum Hall phase transitions are observed experimentally. All the experimental observations are largely consistent with our phenomenological model calculations. Hence, we establish that a large twist angle system is an excellent platform for high-temperature excitonic condensation.

Wigner-molecularization-enabled dynamic nuclear field programming

Multielectron semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) provide a novel platform to study the role of Coulomb correlations in finite quantum systems and their impact on many-body energy spectra. An example is the formation of interaction-driven, spatially localized electron states of Wigner molecules (WMs). Although Wigner molecularization has been confirmed by real-space imaging and coherent spectroscopy, the open system dynamics of the strongly-correlated states with the environment are not yet well understood. Here, we demonstrate efficient control of spin transfer between an artificial three-electron WM and the nuclear environment in a GaAs double QD. A Landau-Zener sweep-based polarization sequence and low-lying anti-crossings of spin multiplet states enabled by Wigner molecularization are utilized. An efficient polarization rate of 2.58 $h \cdotp kHz \cdotp (g^* \cdotp μ_B)^{-1}$ per electron spin flip and, consequently, programmable nuclear polarization by controlled single-electron tunneling are achieved. Combined with coherent control of spin states, we achieve control of magnitude, polarity, and site dependence of the nuclear field. It is demonstrated that the same level of control cannot be achieved in the non-interacting regime. Thus, we confirm the multiplet spin structure of a WM, paving the way for active control of newly emerging correlated electron states for application in mesoscopic environment engineering.

Temperature selective thermometry with sub-microsecond time resolution using dressed-spin states in diamond

Versatile nanoscale sensors that are susceptible to changes in a variety of physical quantities often exhibit limited selectivity. This paper reports a novel scheme based on microwave-dressed spin states for optically probed nanoscale temperature detection using diamond quantum sensors, which provides selective sensitivity to temperature changes. By combining this scheme with a continuous pump-probe scheme using ensemble nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds, a sub-microsecond temporal resolution with thermal sensitivity of 3.7 K$\cdot$Hz$^{-1/2}$ that is insensitive to variations in external magnetic fields on the order of 2 G is demonstrated. The presented results are favorable for the practical application of time-resolved nanoscale quantum sensing, where temperature imaging is required under fluctuating magnetic fields.

Single-shot readout of a driven hybrid qubit in a GaAs double quantum dot

We report a single-shot-based projective readout of a semiconductor hybrid qubit formed by three electrons in a GaAs double quantum dot. Voltage-controlled adiabatic transitions between the qubit operations and readout conditions allow high-fidelity mapping of quantum states. We show that a large ratio both in relaxation time vs. tunneling time (~ 50) and singlet-triplet splitting vs. thermal energy (~ 20) allow energy-selective tunneling-based spin-to-charge conversion with readout visibility ~ 92.6%. Combined with ac driving, we demonstrate high visibility coherent Rabi and Ramsey oscillations of a hybrid qubit in GaAs. Further, we discuss the generality of the method for use in other materials, including silicon.

The Mu3e experiment: Toward the construction of an HV-MAPS vertex detector

The Mu3e experiment searches for the lepton flavor violating decay $μ^+~\rightarrow~e^+~e^+~e^-$ with an ultimate aimed sensitivity of 1 event in $10^{16}$ decays. This goal can only be achieved by reducing the material budget per tracking layer to $X/X_0 \approx 0.1 \%$. High-Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS) which are thinned to $50\ μm$ serve as sensors. Gaseous helium is chosen as coolant. Results of recent studies related to the sensor prototypes, the helium cooling, and module prototyping are presented. The recent chip submission MuPix10 has proven its functionality regarding efficiency and time resolution. The helium cooling system for the inner tracker could be verified using a full-scale prototype. A complete prototype equipped with MuPix10 chips will be tested inside the Mu3e magnet in summer 2021.

MuPix10: First Results from the Final Design

Many years of research and development of High Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HVMAPS) have culminated in the final design for the Mu3e pixel sensor. MuPix10 is a fully monolithic sensor with an active pixel matrix size of $20\times20\,\mathrm{mm}^2$ produced in the $180\,\mathrm{nm}$ HV-CMOS process at TSI Semiconductors. The pixel size is $80\times80\,\mathrm{μm}^2$. Hits are read out using a column-drain architecture and sent over up to four serial links with up to $1.6\,\left.\mathrm{Gbit}\middle/\mathrm{s}\right.$ each. By means of DC/DC converters and exclusive usage of on-chip biasing, MuPix10 is fully operable with a minimal set of electrical connections. This is an integral requirement by the Mu3e experiment since it enables the construction of ultra-thin pixel modules with $0.1\,$% of a radiation length per layer. First results from lab characterisation and testbeam campaigns are presented.

Strongly adhesive dry transfer technique for van der Waals heterostructure

That one can stack van der Waals materials with atomically sharp interfaces has provided a new material platform of constructing heterostructures. The technical challenge of mechanical stacking is picking up the exfoliated atomically thin materials after mechanical exfoliation without chemical and mechanical degradation. Chemically inert hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has been widely used for encapsulating and picking up vdW materials. However, due to the relatively weak adhesion of hBN, assembling vdW heterostructures based on hBN has been limited. We report a new dry transfer technique. We used two vdW semiconductors (ZnPS3 and CrPS4) to pick up and encapsulate layers for vdW heterostructures, which otherwise are known to be hard to fabricate. By combining with optimized polycaprolactone (PCL) providing strong adhesion, we demonstrated various vertical heterostructure devices, including quasi-2D superconducting NbSe2 Josephson junctions with atomically clean interface. The versatility of the PCL-based vdW stacking method provides a new route for assembling complex 2D vdW materials without interfacial degradation.

Three individual two-axis control of singlet-triplet qubits in a micromagnet integrated quantum dot array

We report individual confinement and two-axis qubit operations of two electron spin qubits in GaAs gate-defined sextuple quantum dot array with integrated micro-magnet. As a first step toward multiple qubit operations, we demonstrate coherent manipulations of three singlet-triplet qubits showing underdamped Larmor and Ramsey oscillations in all double dot sites. We provide an accurate measure of site site-dependent field gradients and rms electric and magnetic noise, and we discuss the adequacy of simple rectangular micro-magnet for practical use in multiple quantum dot arrays. We also discuss current limitations and possible strategies for realizing simultaneous multi multi-qubit operations in extended linear arrays.

Algorithmic decomposition for efficient multiple nuclear spin detection in diamond

Efficiently detecting and characterizing individual spins in solid-state hosts is an essential step to expand the fields of quantum sensing and quantum information processing. While selective detection and control of a few 13C nuclear spins in diamond have been demonstrated using the electron spin of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, a reliable, efficient, and automatic characterization method is desired. Here, we develop an automated algorithmic method for decomposing spectral data to identify and characterize multiple nuclear spins in diamond. We demonstrate efficient nuclear spin identification and accurate reproduction of hyperfine interaction components for both virtual and experimental nuclear spectroscopy data. We conduct a systematic analysis of this methodology and discuss the range of hyperfine interaction components of each nuclear spin that the method can efficiently detect. The result demonstrates a systematic approach that automatically detects nuclear spins with the aid of computational methods, facilitating the future scalability of devices.

Electrical detection of the inverse Edelstein effect on the surface of SmB$_6$

We report the measurement of spin current induced charge accumulation, the inverse Edelstein effect (IEE), on the surface of a candidate topological Kondo insulator SmB6 single crystal. Robust surface conduction channel of SmB6 has been shown to exhibit large degree of spin-momentum locking, and spin polarized current through an external ferromagnetic contact induces the spin dependent charge accumulation on the surface of SmB6. The dependences of the IEE signal on the bias current, an external magnetic field direction and temperature are consistent with the anticlockwise spin texture for the surface band in SmB6 in the momentum space, and the direction and magnitude of the effect compared with the normal Edelstein signal are clearly explained by the Onsager reciprocal relation. Furthermore, we estimate spin-to-charge conversion efficiency, the IEE length, as 4.46 nm that is an order of magnitude larger than the efficiency found in other typical Rashba interfaces, implying that the Rashba contribution to the IEE signal could be small. Building upon existing reports on the surface charge and spin conduction nature on this material, our results provide additional evidence that the surface of SmB6 supports spin polarized conduction channel.

Robust energy selective tunneling readout of singlet triplet qubits under large magnetic field gradient

Fast and high-fidelity quantum state detection is essential for building robust spin-based quantum information processing platforms in semiconductors. The Pauli spin blockade (PSB)-based spin-to-charge conversion and its variants are widely used for the spin state discrimination of two-electron singlet-triplet (ST$_0$) qubits; however, the single-shot measurement fidelity is limited by either the low signal contrast, or the short lifetime of the triplet state at the PSB energy detuning, especially due to strong mixing with singlet states at large magnetic field gradients. Ultimately, the limited single-shot measurement fidelity leads to low visibility of quantum operations. Here, we demonstrate an alternative method to achieve spin-to-charge conversion of ST$_0$ qubit states using energy selective tunneling between doubly occupied quantum dots (QDs) and electron reservoirs. We demonstrate a single-shot measurement fidelity of 90% and an S-T$_0$ oscillation visibility of 81% at a field gradient of 100 mT (~ 500 $MHz\cdot h \cdot(g^{*}\cdot μ_B)^{-1}$); this allows single-shot readout with full electron charge signal contrast and, at the same time, long and tunable measurement time with negligible effect of relaxation even at strong magnetic field gradients. Using an rf-sensor positioned opposite to the QD array, we apply this method to two ST$_0$ qubits and show high-visibility readout of two individual single-qubit gate operations is possible with a single rf single-electron transistor sensor. We expect our measurement scheme for two-electron spin states can be applied to various hosting materials and provides a simplified and complementary route for multiple qubit state detection with high accuracy in QD-based quantum computing platforms.

Deep learning enhanced individual nuclear-spin detection

The detection of nuclear spins using individual electron spins has enabled new opportunities in quantum sensing and quantum information processing. Proof-of-principle experiments have demonstrated atomic-scale imaging of nuclear-spin samples and controlled multi-qubit registers. However, to image more complex samples and to realize larger-scale quantum processors, computerized methods that efficiently and automatically characterize spin systems are required. Here, we realize a deep learning model for automatic identification of nuclear spins using the electron spin of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond as a sensor. Based on neural network algorithms, we develop noise recovery procedures and training sequences for highly non-linear spectra. We apply these methods to experimentally demonstrate fast identification of 31 nuclear spins around a single NV center and accurately determine the hyperfine parameters. Our methods can be extended to larger spin systems and are applicable to a wide range of electron-nuclear interaction strengths. These results enable efficient imaging of complex spin samples and automatic characterization of large spin-qubit registers.

Simplified calcium signaling cascade for synaptic plasticity

We propose a model for synaptic plasticity based on a calcium signaling cascade. The model simplifies the full signaling pathways from a calcium influx to the phosphorylation (potentiation) and dephosphorylation (depression) of glutamate receptors that are gated by fictive C1 and C2 catalysts, respectively. This model is based on tangible chemical reactions, including fictive catalysts, for long-term plasticity rather than the conceptual theories commonplace in various models, such as preset thresholds of calcium concentration. Our simplified model successfully reproduced the experimental synaptic plasticity induced by different protocols such as (i) a synchronous pairing protocol and (ii) correlated presynaptic and postsynaptic action potentials (APs). Further, the ocular dominance plasticity (or the experimental verification of the celebrated Bienenstock--Cooper--Munro theory) was reproduced by two model synapses that compete by means of back-propagating APs (bAPs). The key to this competition is synapse-specific bAPs with reference to bAP-boosting on the physiological grounds.

Strong polarization of individual nuclear spins weakly coupled to nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond

We experimentally demonstrate high degree of polarization of 13C nuclear spins weakly interacting with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. We combine coherent microwave excitation pulses with optical illumination to provide controlled relaxation and achieve a polarity-tunable, fast nuclear polarization of degree higher than 85% at room temperature for remote 13C nuclear spins exhibiting hyperfine interaction strength with NV centers of the order of 600 kHz. We show with the aid of numerical simulation that the anisotropic hyperfine tensor components naturally provide a route to control spin mixing parameter so that highly efficient nuclear polarization is enabled through careful tuning of nuclear quantization axis by external magnetic field. We further discuss spin dynamics and wide applicability of this method to various target 13C nuclear spins around the NV center electron spin. The proposed control method demonstrates an efficient and versatile route to realize, for example, high-fidelity spin register initialization and quantum metrology using nuclear spin resources in solids.

Fast raster scan multiplexed charge stability measurements toward high-throughput quantum dot array calibration

We report raster scan multiplexed charge-stability diagram measurements for tuning multiple gate-defined quantum dots in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. We evaluate the charge sensitivity of the quantum point contact (QPC) in both radio frequency (rf)-reflectometry and direct current (dc)-transport modes, where we measure the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 40 for rf-QPC with integration time per pixel of 10ms , corresponding to 1.14ms for resolving single electron transition in few electron regime. The high SNR for reasonable integration time allows fast two-dimensional (2D) scanning, which we use to facilitate double and triple quantum dot tuning process. We configure highly stable raster scan multiplexed quantum dot tuning platform using a switching matrix and transformer-coupled alternating current (ac) ramp sources with software control. As an example of high-throughput multiple quantum dot tuning, we demonstrate systematic triple quantum dot (TQD) formation using this platform in which a multiplexed combination of 2D scans enables the identification of few electron regime in multiple quantum dots in just a few minutes. The method presented here is general, and we expect that the tuning platform is applicable to more complex multiple quantum dot arrays, allowing efficient quantum dot system Hamiltonian parameter calibration.

Electrical detection of surface spin polarization of candidate topological Kondo insulator SmB6

The Kondo insulator compound SmB6 has emerged as a strong candidate for the realization of a topologically nontrivial state in a strongly correlated system, a topological Kondo insulator, which can be a novel platform for investigating the interplay between nontrivial topology and emergent correlation driven phenomena in solid state systems. Electronic transport measurements on this material, however, so far showed only the robust surface dominated charge conduction at low temperatures, lacking evidence of its connection to the topological nature by showing, for example, spin polarization due to spin momentum locking. Here, we find evidence for surface state spin polarization by electrical detection of a current induced spin chemical potential difference on the surface of a SmB6 single crystal. We clearly observe a surface dominated spin voltage, which is proportional to the projection of the spin polarization onto the contact magnetization, is determined by the direction and magnitude of the charge current and is strongly temperature dependent due to the crossover from surface to bulk conduction. We estimate the lower bound of the surface state net spin polarization as 15 percent based on the quantum transport model providing direct evidence that SmB6 supports metallic spin helical surface states.

Attractive Coulomb interactions in a triple quantum dot

Electron pairing due to a repulsive Coulomb interaction in a triple quantum dot (TQD) is experimentally studied. It is found that electron pairing in two dots of a TQD is mediated by the third dot, when the third dot strongly couples with the other two via Coulomb repulsion so that the TQD is in the twofold degenerate ground states of (1, 0, 0) and (0, 1, 1) charge configurations. Using the transport spectroscopy that monitors electron transport through each individual dot of a TQD, we analyze how to achieve the degeneracy in experiments, how the degeneracy is related to electron pairing, and the resulting nontrivial behavior of electron transport. Our findings may be used to design a system with nontrivial electron correlations and functionalities.
