Measuring clock jumps using pulsar timing

In this paper, we investigate the statistical signal-processing algorithm to measure the instant local clock jump from the timing data of multiple pulsars. Our algorithm is based on the framework of Bayesian statistics. In order to make the Bayesian algorithm applicable with limited computational resources, we dedicated our efforts to the analytic marginalization of irrelevant parameters. We found that the widely used parameter for pulsar timing systematics, the `Efac' parameter, can be analytically marginalized. This reduces the Gaussian likelihood to a function very similar to the Student's $t$-distribution. Our iterative method to solve the maximum likelihood estimator is also explained in the paper. Using pulsar timing data from the Yunnan Kunming 40m radio telescope, we demonstrate the application of the method, where 80-ns level precision for the clock jump can be achieved. Such a precision is comparable to that of current commercial time transferring service using satellites. We expect that the current method could help developing the autonomous pulsar time scale.

High-precision measurement of a propagation loss of single-mode optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator

We demonstrate fabrication of single-mode optical waveguides on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) by optical patterning combined with chemo-mechanical polishing. The fabricated LNOI waveguides have a nearly symmetric mode profile of a mode field size of ~2.5 micron (full-width at half maximum). We develop a high-precision measurement approach by which the single mode waveguides are characterized to have a propagation loss of ~0.042 dB/cm.

Arbitrary function resonance tuner of the optical microcavity with sub-MHz resolution

The resonance frequency of an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity is extremely important in its various applications. Many efforts have been made to fine tune this parameter. Here, we report the design and implementation of a function resonance tuner of an optical microcavity with resolution about 650 kHz (7 pm @ 1450 nm band), 20% of the optical WGM linewidth. A piezoelectric nano-positioner is used to mechanically compress the microsphere in its axial direction. The ultrafine frequency tuning is achieved benefitting from the much less changes in the axial direction than equatorial semiaxes of the microsphere and the sub-nanometer resolution of the nano-positioner. The tuning of the resonance can be made to an arbitrary function, dynamically, with near perfect accuracy. We have demonstrated the periodically tuning of resonance in the sine and sigmoid function respectively, both with over 99% fitting accuracy. This work expands the application of microresonators greatly, especially microspheres with ultrahigh quality factor, in multi-mode coupling system or time-floquet system.

Field-free spin-orbit-torque switching of perpendicular magnetization aided by uniaxial shape anisotropy

It has been demonstrated that the switching of perpendicular magnetization can be achieved with spin orbit torque (SOT) at an ultrafast speed and low energy consumption. However, to make the switching deterministic, an undesirable magnetic field or unconventional device geometry is required to break the structure inverse symmetry. Here we propose a novel scheme for SOT-induced field-free deterministic switching of perpendicular magnetization. The proposed scheme can be implemented in a simple magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) /heavy-metal system, without the need of complicated device structure. The perpendicular-anisotropy MTJ is patterned into elliptical shape and misaligned with the axis of the heavy metal, so that the uniaxial shape anisotropy aids the magnetization switching. Furthermore, unlike the conventional switching scheme where the switched final magnetization state is dependent on the direction of the applied current, in our scheme the bipolar switching is implemented by choosing different current paths, which offers a new freedom for developing novel spintronics memories or logic devices. Through the macrospin simulation, we show that a wide operation window of the applied current pulse can be obtained in the proposed scheme. The precise control of pulse amplitude or pulse duration is not required. The influences of key parameters such as damping constant and field-like torque strength are discussed as well.

Three-dimensional laser printing of macro-scale glass objects at a micro-scale resolution

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has allowed for production of geometrically complex 3D objects with extreme flexibility, which is currently undergoing rapid expansions in terms of materials, functionalities, as well as areas of application. When attempting to print 3D microstructures in glass, femtosecond laser induced chemical etching (FLICE) has proved itself a powerful approach. Here, we demonstrate fabrication of macro-scale 3D glass objects of large heights up to ~3.8 cm with a well-balanced (i.e., lateral vs longitudinal) spatial resolution of ~20 μm. The remarkable accomplishment is achieved by revealing an unexplored regime in the interaction of ultrafast laser pulses with fused silica which results in aberration-free focusing of the laser pulses deeply inside fused silica.

Reduced-order Deep Learning for Flow Dynamics

In this paper, we investigate neural networks applied to multiscale simulations and discuss a design of a novel deep neural network model reduction approach for multiscale problems. Due to the multiscale nature of the medium, the fine-grid resolution gives rise to a huge number of degrees of freedom. In practice, low-order models are derived to reduce the computational cost. In our paper, we use a non-local multicontinuum (NLMC) approach, which represents the solution on a coarse grid [18]. Using multi-layer learning techniques, we formulate and learn input-output maps constructed with NLMC on a coarse grid. We study the features of the coarse-grid solutions that neural networks capture via relating the input-output optimization to $l_1$ minimization of PDE solutions. In proposed multi-layer networks, we can learn the forward operators in a reduced way without computing them as in POD like approaches. We present soft thresholding operators as activation function, which our studies show to have some advantages. With these activation functions, the neural network identifies and selects important multiscale features which are crucial in modeling the underlying flow. Using trained neural network approximation of the input-output map, we construct a reduced-order model for the solution approximation. We use multi-layer networks for the time stepping and reduced-order modeling, where at each time step the appropriate important modes are selected. For a class of nonlinear problems, we suggest an efficient strategy. Numerical examples are presented to examine the performance of our method.

The Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP): Project Details and Initial Results from the Galactic Longitude of 25.8deg to 49.7deg

The Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project is an unbiased Galactic plane CO survey for mapping regions of l=-10deg to +250deg and |b|<5.2deg with the 13.7 m telescope of the Purple Mountain Observatory. The legacy survey aims to observe the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O (J=1-0) lines simultaneously with full sampling using the nine-beam Superconducting SpectroScopic Array Receiver (SSAR) system with an instantaneous bandwidth of 1 GHz. In this paper, the completed 250 deg^2 data from l=+25.8deg to +49.7deg are presented with a grid spacing of 30" and a typical rms noise level of ~0.5 K for 12CO at the channel width of 0.16 km/s and ~0.3 K for 13CO and C18O at 0.17 km/s. The high quality data with moderate resolution (50"), uniform sensitivity, and high spatial dynamic range, allow us to investigate the details of molecular clouds (MCs) traced by the three CO isotope lines. Three interesting examples are briefly investigated, including distant Galactic spiral arms traced by CO emission with VLSR<0 km/s, the bubble-like dense gas structure near the HII region W40, and the MCs distribution perpendicular to the Galactic plane.

Cavity optomechanics, the study of the interplay between light and mechanical properties of matter, has triggered a wide range of groundbreaking researches from cavity quantum electrodynamics, label free single molecule detection to the creation of phonon laser. Using femtosecond laser direct writing followed by chemo-mechanical polishing, here we report an ultrahigh quality (Q~10^7) factor lithium niobate (LN) whispering gallery microresonator monolithically integrated with in-plane microelectrodes. Coherent regenerative optomechanical oscillation with an effective mechanical quality (Qm) factor as high as 2.86*10^8 is observed in air. We demonstrate real-time electrical tuning of the optomechanical frequency with an electro-mechanical tuning efficiency around -134 kHz/100V.

Prediction of Discretization of GMsFEM using Deep Learning

In this paper, we propose a deep-learning-based approach to a class of multiscale problems. THe Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) has been proven successful as a model reduction technique of flow problems in heterogeneous and high-contrast porous media. The key ingredients of GMsFEM include mutlsicale basis functions and coarse-scale parameters, which are obtained from solving local problems in each coarse neighborhood. Given a fixed medium, these quantities are precomputed by solving local problems in an offline stage, and result in a reduced-order model. However, these quantities have to be re-computed in case of varying media. The objective of our work is to make use of deep learning techniques to mimic the nonlinear relation between the permeability field and the GMsFEM discretizations, and use neural networks to perform fast computation of GMsFEM ingredients repeatedly for a class of media. We provide numerical experiments to investigate the predictive power of neural networks and the usefulness of the resultant multiscale model in solving channelized porous media flow problems.

Generalized Multiscale Multicontinuum Model for Fractured Vuggy Carbonate Reservoirs

Simulating flow in a highly heterogeneous reservoir with multiscale characteristics could be considerably demanding. To tackle this problem, we propose a numerical scheme coupling the Generalized Multiscale Finite Element Method (GMsFEM) with a triple-continuum model aimed at a faster simulator framework that can explicitly represent the interactions among different continua. To further enrich the descriptive ability of our proposed model, we combine the Discrete Fracture Model (DFM) to model the local effects of discrete fractures. In the proposed model, GMsFEM, as an advanced model reduction technique, enables capturing the multiscale flow dynamics. This is accomplished by systematically generating an approximation space through solving a series of local snapshot and spectral problems. The resulting eigenfunctions can pass the local features to the global level when acting as basis functions in coarse problems. Our goal in this paper is to further improve the accuracy of flow simulation in complicated reservoirs especially for the case when multiple discrete fractures located in single coarse neighborhood and multiscale finite element methods fail. Together with a detailed description of the model, several numerical experiments are conducted to confirm the success of our proposed method. A rigid proof is also given in the aspect of numerical analysis.

Low-loss Lithium Niobate on Insulator (LNOI) Waveguides of a 10 cm-length and a Sub-nanometer Surface Roughness

We develop a technique for realizing lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) waveguides of a multi-centimeter-length with a propagation loss as low as 0.027 dB/cm. Our technique relies on patterning a chromium (Cr) thin film coated on the top surface of LNOI into a hard mask with a femtosecond laser followed by the chemo-mechanical polishing for structuring the LNOI into the waveguides. The surface roughness on the waveguides is determined to be 0.452 nm with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The approach is compatible with other surface patterning technologies such as optical and electron beam lithographies or laser direct writing, enabling high-throughput manufacturing of large-scale LNOI-based photonic integrated circuits.

Efficient Uncertainty Evaluation of Vector Network Analyser Measurements Using Two-Tier Bayesian Analysis and Monte Carlo Method

Antennas are a key element in any communication system and vector network analyser (VNA) is popular tool for charactering antenna impedance bandwidth. In this paper, an efficient uncertainty evaluation method is proposed for VNA measurement based on its uncertainty propagation mechanism using Bayesian analysis and Monte Carlo method. The proposed method is generic and can be applied to VNA with arbitrary number of ports. In order to obtain the complete information of measurement uncertainty distribution, a two-tier Bayesian analytic process is carried out. The proposed method contains three steps. In the first step, the posterior distribution of each uncertainty source of VNA calibrations is deduced by the use of prior and current sample information through the first-tier Bayesian analysis. In the second step, the obtained posterior distributions of uncertainty sources are taken into the Monte Carlo simulation of one-port VNA measurement uncertainties. In the last step, the results obtained in the second step are used as the prior distribution of the secondary Bayesian evaluation, then the evaluation results of the measurement uncertainty can be obtained with the means, variances and skewness of the probabilistic distribution. The numerical analysis using an antenna measurement results demonstrate the high-efficiency and reliability of this proposed method.

Single Layer PCB Broadband Circular Polarisation Millimetre Wave Massive MIMO Array

A single layer broadband millimetre wave (mm-wave) array with circular polarisation is proposed for the fifth generation (5G) mm-wave communication applications. The antenna element is designed to integrate the matching circuit into a single layer. Hence no additional matching and feeding networks are required which makes the antenna element very easy to synthesise a massive array. The array has a 10 dB return loss bandwidth between 26 GHz and 32 GHz. The polar angle axial ratio is less than 3 within the beamwidth of -60 degree to 60 degree. The proposed antenna structure is simple, low cost and robust, which we envisage suitable for the massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) applications.

A rigorous link performance and measurement uncertainty assessment for MIMO OTA characterisation

In this paper, a rigorous link performance test for MIMO OTA (multiple-input-multiple-output over-the-air) characterisation with traceable signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is presented. Measurements were made with three different testbeds which represent the 4G (fourth-generation) LTE (long term evolution) SISO (single-input-single-output), 4G LTE MIMO and 5G (fifth-generation) millimetre-wave (mm-wave) MIMO communication systems, respectively, in the small antenna radiated test (SMART) screened fully anechoic chamber, screened control room and reverberation chamber at the UK National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The measurement campaign comprised of automated data acquisition of channel power, downlink (DL) & uplink (UL) error vector magnitude (EVM) and throughput. The measurement repeatability has been assessed with standard deviation plotted as error bars and the uncertainty sources in the OTA test are analysed.

Highly-efficient second and third harmonic generation in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microresonator

Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Weight-importance sparse training in keyword spotting

Large size models are implemented in recently ASR system to deal with complex speech recognition problems. The num- ber of parameters in these models makes them hard to deploy, especially on some resource-short devices such as car tablet. Besides this, at most of time, ASR system is used to deal with real-time problem such as keyword spotting (KWS). It is contradictory to the fact that large model requires long com- putation time. To deal with this problem, we apply some sparse algo- rithms to reduces number of parameters in some widely used models, Deep Neural Network (DNN) KWS, which requires real short computation time. We can prune more than 90 % even 95% of parameters in the model with tiny effect decline. And the sparse model performs better than baseline models which has same order number of parameters. Besides this, sparse algorithm can lead us to find rational model size au- tomatically for certain problem without concerning choosing an original model size.

Deep Multiscale Model Learning

The objective of this paper is to design novel multi-layer neural network architectures for multiscale simulations of flows taking into account the observed data and physical modeling concepts. Our approaches use deep learning concepts combined with local multiscale model reduction methodologies to predict flow dynamics. Using reduced-order model concepts is important for constructing robust deep learning architectures since the reduced-order models provide fewer degrees of freedom. Flow dynamics can be thought of as multi-layer networks. More precisely, the solution (e.g., pressures and saturations) at the time instant $n+1$ depends on the solution at the time instant $n$ and input parameters, such as permeability fields, forcing terms, and initial conditions. One can regard the solution as a multi-layer network, where each layer, in general, is a nonlinear forward map and the number of layers relates to the internal time steps. We will rely on rigorous model reduction concepts to define unknowns and connections for each layer. In each layer, our reduced-order models will provide a forward map, which will be modified ("trained") using available data. It is critical to use reduced-order models for this purpose, which will identify the regions of influence and the appropriate number of variables. Because of the lack of available data, the training will be supplemented with computational data as needed and the interpolation between data-rich and data-deficient models. We will also use deep learning algorithms to train the elements of the reduced model discrete system. We will present main ingredients of our approach and numerical results. Numerical results show that using deep learning and multiscale models, we can improve the forward models, which are conditioned to the available data.
