DRPose3D: Depth Ranking in 3D Human Pose Estimation

In this paper, we propose a two-stage depth ranking based method (DRPose3D) to tackle the problem of 3D human pose estimation. Instead of accurate 3D positions, the depth ranking can be identified by human intuitively and learned using the deep neural network more easily by solving classification problems. Moreover, depth ranking contains rich 3D information. It prevents the 2D-to-3D pose regression in two-stage methods from being ill-posed. In our method, firstly, we design a Pairwise Ranking Convolutional Neural Network (PRCNN) to extract depth rankings of human joints from images. Secondly, a coarse-to-fine 3D Pose Network(DPNet) is proposed to estimate 3D poses from both depth rankings and 2D human joint locations. Additionally, to improve the generality of our model, we introduce a statistical method to augment depth rankings. Our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in the Human3.6M benchmark for all three testing protocols, indicating that depth ranking is an essential geometric feature which can be learned to improve the 3D pose estimation.

Some properties of the free stable distributions

We investigate certain analytical properties of the free $α-$stable densities on the line. We prove that they are all classically infinitely divisible when $α\le 1$, and that they belong to the extended Thorin class when $α\leq 3/4.$ The Lévy measure is explicitly computed for $α=1,$ showing that the free 1-stable random variables are not Thorin except in the drifted Cauchy case. In the symmetric case we show that the free stable densities are not infinitely divisible when $α> 1.$ In the one-sided case we prove, refining unimodality, that the densities are whale-shaped that is their successive derivatives vanish exactly once. Finally, we derive a collection of results connected to the fine structure of the one-sided free stable densities, including a detailed analysis of the Kanter random variable, complete asymptotic expansions at zero, a new identity for the Beta-Gamma algebra, and several intrinsic properties of whale-shaped densities.

Simultaneous generation of four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering in coupled lithium niobate microdisks mediated by second harmonic generation

High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Interstellar Scintillation observations for PSR B0355+54

In this paper, we report our investigation of pulsar scintillation phenomena by monitoring PSR B0355$+$54 at 2.25 GHz for three successive months using \emph{Kunming 40-m radio telescope}. We have measured the dynamic spectrum, the two-dimensional correlation function, and the secondary spectrum. In those observations with high signal-to-noise ratio ($S/N\ge100$), we have detected the scintillation arcs, which are rarely observable using such a small telescope. The sub-microsecond scale width of the scintillation arc indicates that the transverse scale of structures on scattering screen is as compact as AU size. Our monitoring has also shown that both the scintillation bandwidth, timescale, and arc curvature of PSR B0355$+$54 were varying temporally. The plausible explanation would need to invoke multiple-scattering-screen or multiple-scattering-structure scenario that different screens or ray paths dominate the scintillation process at different epochs.

Towards Bi-Directional Communication in Human-Swarm Teaming: A Survey

Swarm systems consist of large numbers of robots that collaborate autonomously. With an appropriate level of human control, swarm systems could be applied in a variety of contexts ranging from search-and-rescue situations to Cyber defence. The two decision making cycles of swarms and humans operate on two different time-scales, where the former is normally orders of magnitude faster than the latter. Closing the loop at the intersection of these two cycles will create fast and adaptive human-swarm teaming networks. This paper brings desperate pieces of the ground work in this research area together to review this multidisciplinary literature. We conclude with a framework to synthesize the findings and summarize the multi-modal indicators needed for closed-loop human-swarm adaptive systems.

Boundedness of the bilinear Bochner-Riesz Means in the non-Banach triangle case

In this article, we investigate the boundedness of the bilinear Bochner-Riesz means $S^{α}$ in the non-Banach triangle case. We improve the corresponding results in [Bern] in two aspects: Our partition of the non-Banach triangle is simpler and we obtain lower smoothness indices $α(p_{1},p_{2})$ for various cases apart from $1 \leq p_1=p_2 <2$.

Bilinear Riesz means on the Heisenberg group

In this article, we investigate the bilinear Riesz means $S^{α}$ associated to the sublaplacian on the Heisenberg group. We prove that the operator $S^{α}$ is bounded from $L^{p_{1}}\times L^{p_{2}}$ into $ L^{p}$ for $1\leq p_{1}, p_{2}\leq \infty $ and $1/p=1/p_{1}+1/p_{2}$ when $ α$ is large than a suitable smoothness index $α(p_{1},p_{2})$. There are some essential differences between the Euclidean space and the Heisenberg group for studying the bilinear Riesz means problem. We make use of some special techniques to obtain a lower index $α(p_{1},p_{2})$.

Fabrication of high quality factor lithium niobate double-disk using a femtosecond laser

We demonstrate fabrication of a high quality factor lithium niobate double-disk whispering-gallery microcavity using femtosecond laser assisted ion beam milling. Using this method, two vertically stacked 30-um-diameter disks with a 200-nm-gap are fabricated. With our device, an optical quality factor as high as 1.2*10^5 is demonstrated. Our approach is scalable to fabricate multiple disks on a single chip.

Tuning the diffusion of magnon in Y3Fe5O12 by light excitation

Deliberate control of magnon transportation will lead to an energy-efficient technology for information transmission and processing. Y3Fe5O12(YIG), exhibiting extremely large magnon diffusion length due to the low magnetic damping constant, has been intensively investigated for decades. While most of the previous works focused on the determination of magnon diffusion length by various techniques, herein we demonstrated how to tune magnon diffusion by light excitation. We found that the diffusion length of thermal magnons is strongly dependent on light wavelength when the magnon is generated by exposing YIG directly to laser beam. The diffusion length, determined by a nonlocal geometry at room temperature, is ~30 um for the magnons produced by visible light (400-650 nm), and ~136-156 um for the laser between 808 nm and 980 nm. The diffusion distance is much longer than the reported value. In addition to thermal gradient, we found that light illumination affected the electron configuration of the Fe3+ ion in YIG. Long wavelength laser triggers a high spin to low spin state transition of the Fe3+ ions in FeO6 octahedron. This in turn causes a substantial softening of the magnon thus a dramatic increase in diffusion distance. The present work paves the way towards an efficient tuning of magnon transport behavior which is crucially important for magnon spintronics.

The Evolution of Alq3 Films Exposure to Air

Small molecular solar cell becomes more stable when a thin tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) buffer layer instead of bathocuproine (BCP) is inserted between the active layer and electrode. In this work, we introduce a single layer device (ITO / Alq3 / Au) exposure to air to investigate the role of Alq3 in organic solar cells. The large PL intensity and undetectable Raman peaks of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-Hq), a degradation product of Alq3 through chemical reaction, indicate that the degradation of Alq3 is not severe even after a few hundred hours exposure. Thus the Alq3 buffer layer gives a good protection of the active layers against oxygen\water permeation comparing with BCP. However, the small quantity of degraded Alq3 products can enhance the current density (after 15 h) in single layer Alq3 device, which is reflected in the decrease of parallel resistance Rp. Therefore, due to the enhanced charge transport and the long term better protection from ambient oxygen/water, the lifetime of small molecular solar cell with Alq3 buffer layer is improved.

A Saw-tooth Scaling of Work Function in Hydrogenated Graphene

The saw-tooth scaling investigations of work functions (WF) in hydrogenated graphene are theoretically performed by density functional theory. The positions of hydrogen atoms and the H/C ratios affect WF. With the comparison of different graphene structures by adsorbed two hydrogen atoms, WF is larger with less negative charges of the graphene. With different H/C ratios, WF is controlled by two parts: the graphene surface and hydrogen groups. When the ratio is smaller than 0.5, the work func-tion is more dependent on the Mulliken charge of graphene. With more hydrogen atoms, the surface of graphene is more negative, resulting in a smaller work function. When the ratio is larger than 0.5, the effect of hydrogen groups cannot be ignored. When two sides of graphene have different numbers of hy-drogen atoms, a dipole exists, making the movement of electron from Fermi level to vacuum level more difficult, thus WF is larger than that with the same hydrogen atoms of each side. Therefore the scaling of work function acts like a saw-tooth dependent on H/C ratio.

The Reversible Spin Switch by External Control of Interval Distance of CuPc and C59N with the investigation of DFT

In this paper, we introduce a new kind of spin switch based on a joint system of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and C59N. Using density functional theory, we investigate the total magnetic moment of this system when gradually changing the interval distance between two molecules. The spin hopping happens during the critical distance with very low energy. This phenomenon shows a possible reality of reversible spin switch by external control of the interval distance. With orbital analysis and electron transfer consideration, the form of C59N+- CuPc- ion pair support this spin hopping phenomenon.

Magnetic properties of quasi one-dimensional vanadium-benzene nanowire affected by gas molecules: a first-principle study

Magnetic properties of quasi one-dimensional vanadium-benzene nanowires (VBNW) are investigated theoretically with the absorption of gas molecules-NO and NO2. With the increase adsorption of NO on VBNW, the phase transition from half metal to ferromagnetic metal and last to paramagnetic semiconductor can be observed. With the increase of NO2 on VBNW, half metallic property can be enhanced at first and decreased later. Thus, the electronic and magnetic properties of VBNW can be sensitive and selective to NO and NO2, revealing the potential applications in spintronic sensors of these two kinds of molecules.

TMRT observations of 26 pulsars at 8.6 GHz

Integrated pulse profiles at 8.6~GHz obtained with the Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope (TMRT) are presented for a sample of 26 pulsars. Mean flux densities and pulse width parameters of these pulsars are estimated. For eleven pulsars these are the first high-frequency observations and for a further four, our observations have a better signal-to-noise ratio than previous observations. For one (PSR J0742-2822) the 8.6~GHz profiles differs from previously observed profiles. A comparison of 19 profiles with those at other frequencies shows that in nine cases the separation between the outmost leading and trailing components decreases with frequency, roughly in agreement with radius-to-frequency mapping, whereas in the other ten the separation is nearly constant. Different spectral indices of profile components lead to the variation of integrated pulse profile shapes with frequency. In seven pulsars with multi-component profiles, the spectral indices of the central components are steeper than those of the outer components. For the 12 pulsars with multi-component profiles in the high-frequency sample, we estimate the core width using gaussian fitting and discuss the width-period relationship.

Low-loss Broadband Negative Refractive Index due to Nonresonant 2D Helical Chiral Metamaterial

We demonstrated a 2D helical chiral metamaterial that exhibits broadband strong optical activity resulting nonresonant Drude-like response. The strong chirality leads to broadband negative refractive index with high figure of merit (>90) and extremely low loss (<2% per layer). The optical activity are insensitive to the angles of incident electromagnetic waves, thereby enabling more flexibility in polarization manipulation applicaitons.

Density solutions to a class of integro-differential equations

We consider the integro-differential equation ${\rm I}^α_{0+}f= x^m f$ on the half-line. We show that there exists a density solution, which is then unique and can be expressed in terms of the Beta distribution, if and only if $m> α.$ These density solutions extend the class of generalized one-sided stable distributions introduced in Schneider (1987) and more recently investigated in Pakes (2014). We study various analytical aspects of these densities, and we solve the open problems about infinite divisibility formulated in Pakes (2014).

Design of Efficient Convolutional Layers using Single Intra-channel Convolution, Topological Subdivisioning and Spatial "Bottleneck" Structure

Deep convolutional neural networks achieve remarkable visual recognition performance, at the cost of high computational complexity. In this paper, we have a new design of efficient convolutional layers based on three schemes. The 3D convolution operation in a convolutional layer can be considered as performing spatial convolution in each channel and linear projection across channels simultaneously. By unravelling them and arranging the spatial convolution sequentially, the proposed layer is composed of a single intra-channel convolution, of which the computation is negligible, and a linear channel projection. A topological subdivisioning is adopted to reduce the connection between the input channels and output channels. Additionally, we also introduce a spatial "bottleneck" structure that utilizes a convolution-projection-deconvolution pipeline to take advantage of the correlation between adjacent pixels in the input. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed layers remarkably outperform the standard convolutional layers with regard to accuracy/complexity ratio. Our models achieve similar accuracy to VGG, ResNet-50, ResNet-101 while requiring 42, 4.5, 6.5 times less computation respectively.

Monolithic integration of a high-quality factor lithium niobate microresonator with a free-standing membrane waveguide using femtosecond laser assisted ion beam writing (FLAIBW)

We demonstrate integrating a high quality factor lithium niobate microdisk resonator with a free-standing membrane waveguide. Our technique is based on femtosecond laser direct writing which produces the pre-structure, followed by focused ion beam milling which reduces the surface roughness of sidewall of the fabricated structure to nanometer scale. Efficient light coupling between the integrated waveguide and microdisk was achieved, and the quality factor of the microresonator was measured as high as 1.67*10^5.
