An Overview of the Basic Physical Properties of MgB$_2$

The basic physical properties of MgB$_2$ have been well established over the past two years of intensive research. At this point there is a general consensus about the values for the isotope shift, critical fields, most of the salient length scales, and general anisotropies. In this paper we will review the determination of these parameters and set the stage for further, more detailed discussions of specific aspects of the physics of MgB$_2$.

Effects of Boron Purity, Mg Stoichiometry and Carbon Substitution on Properties of Polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$

By synthesizing MgB$_{2}$ using boron of different nominal purity we found values of the residual resistivity ratio ($RRR = R(300 K) / R(42 K)$) from 4 to 20, which covers almost all values found in literature. To obtain high values of $RRR$, high purity reagents are necessary. With the isotopically pure boron we obtained the highest $RRR \sim$ 20 for the stoichiometric compound. We also investigated Mg$_{x}$$^{11}$B$_{2}$ samples with 0.8 $< x <$ 1.2. For the range Mg$_{0.8}$$^{11}$B$_{2}$ up to Mg$_{1.2}$$^{11}$B$_{2}$ we found average values of $RRR$ between 14 and 24. For smaller variations in stoichiometry ($x=1\pm 0.1$) $RRR = 18 \pm 3$. All of our data point to the conclusion that high $RRR$ ($\sim 20$) and low $ρ_{0}$ ($\leq 0.4 μΩcm$) are intrinsic material properties associated with high purity MgB$_{2}$. In addition we have performed initial work on optimizing the formation of carbon doped MgB$_{2}$ via the use of B$_{4}$C. Nearly single phase material can be formed by reaction of nominal Mg(B$_{0.8}$C$_{0.2}$)$_{2}$ for 24 hours at $1200^{\circ}C$. The $T_{c}$ for this composition is between $21.9 K$ and $22.7 K$ (depending on criterion).

Hexagonal and Square Flux Line Lattices in CeCoIn5

Using small-angle neutron scattering, we have imaged the magnetic flux line lattice (FLL) in the d-wave heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5. At low fields we find a hexagonal FLL. Around 0.6 T this undergoes what is very likely a first-order transition to square symmetry, with the nearest neighbors oriented along the gap node directions. This orientation of the square FLL is consistent with theoretical predictions based on the d-wave order parameter symmetry.

Synthesis and Properties of YbB2

We report temperature and field dependent measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and resistivity of sintered YbB2 pellets, prepared via two distinct reaction routes, utilizing different temperatures, pressures and sintering times. Sample behavior is affected by the preparation procedure, as a consequence of different secondary phases, most of which were identified via x-ray diffraction. These experiments show that YbB2 is a metal with the Yb atoms in or very close to their 3+ state. YbB2 appears to order anti-ferromagnetically at TN ~ 5.6 K, which can be considered a relatively high ordering temperature for an ytterbium-based intermetallic compound.

Carbon doping of superconducting magnesium diboride

We present details of synthesis optimization and physical properties of nearly single phase carbon doped MgB2 with a nominal stoichiometry of Mg(B{0.8}C{0.2})2 synthesized from magnesium and boron carbide (B4C) as starting materials. The superconducting transition temperature is ~ 22 K (~ 17 K lower than in pure MgB2). The temperature dependence of the upper critical field is steeper than in pure MgB2 with Hc2(10K) ~ 9 T. Temperature dependent specific heat data taken in different applied magnetic fields suggest that the two-gap nature of superconductivity is still preserved for carbon doped MgB2 even with such a heavily suppressed transition temperature. In addition, the anisotropy ratio of the upper critical field for T/Tc ~ 2/3 is gamma ~ 2. This value is distinct from 1 (isotropic) and also distinct from 6 (the value found for pure MgB2).

Phonon-mediated anisotropic superconductivity in the Y and Lu nickel borocarbides

We present scanning tunneling spectroscopy and microscopy measurements at low temperatures in the borocarbide materials RNi2B2C (R=Y, Lu). The characteristic strong coupling structure due to the pairing interaction is unambiguously resolved in the superconducting density of states. It is located at the superconducting gap plus the energy corresponding to a phonon mode identified in previous neutron scattering experiments. These measurements also show that this mode is coupled to the electrons through a highly anisotropic electron-phonon interaction originated by a nesting feature of the Fermi surface. Our experiments, from which we can extract a large electron-phonon coupling parameter lambda (between 0.5 and 0.8), demonstrate that this anisotropic electron-phonon coupling has an essential contribution to the pairing interaction. The tunneling spectra show an anisotropic s-wave superconducting gap function.

Observation of vortex structure in MgB$_2$ single crystals by Bitter decoration technique

We report the observation of superconducting vortices in pure and lightly Al doped MgB$_2$ single crystals. Low field experiments allow for the estimation of the London penetration depth, lambda ~ 1900 $Å$ for T$\sim$6 K. Experiments in higher fields (e.g. 200 Oe) clearly show a triangular vortex lattice in both real space (13 $μ$m by 13 $μ$m Bitter decoration image of over 1000 vortices) and reciprocal space.

On the Influence of a Non-Local Electrodynamics in the Irreversible Magnetization of Non-Magnetic Borocarbides

We present an overview of the temperature, field and angular dependence of the irreversible magnetization of non-magnetic borocarbides (Y;Lu) Ni_2 B_2 C. We show that nonlocal electrodynamics influences pinning via the unusual behavior of the shear modulus in non-hexagonal lattices. On top of that, we observe that the pinning force density F_p exhibits a rich anisotropic behavior that sharply contrasts with its small mass anisotropy. When $H \bot c$, F_p is much larger and has a quite different H dependence, indicating that other pinning mechanisms are present.

Drastic annealing effects in transport properties of single crystals of the YbNi2B2C heavy fermion system

We report temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and thermoelectric power measurements made on the heavy fermion system YbNi2B2C, for both as grown and annealed single crystals. Our results demonstrate a significant variation in the temperature dependent electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power between as grown crystals and crystals that have undergone optimal (150 hour, 950 C) annealing, whereas the thermodynamic properties: (c_p(T) and chi(T)) remain almost unchanged. We interpret these results in terms of redistributions of local Kondo temperatures associated with ligandal disorder for a small (~ 1%) fraction of the Yb sites.

Anisotropy and large magnetoresistance in narrow gap semiconductor FeSb2

A study of the anisotropy in magnetic, transport and magnetotransport properties of FeSb2 has been made on large single crystals grown from Sb flux. Magnetic susceptibility of FeSb2 shows diamagnetic to paramagnetic crossover around 100K. Electrical transport along two axes is semiconducting whereas the third axis exhibits a metal - semiconductor crossover at temperature Tmin which is sensitive to current alignment and ranges between 40 and 80K. In H=70kOe semiconducting transport is restored for T<300K, resulting in large magnetoresistance [rho(70kOe)-rho(0)]/rho(0)=2200% in the crossover temperature range

Highly Anisotropic Gap Function in Borocarbide Superconductor LuNi_2B_2C

The thermal conductivity of borocarbide superconductor LuNi_2B_2C was measured down to 70 mK (T_c/200) in a magnetic field perpendicular to the heat current from H = 0 to above H_c2 = 7 T. As soon as vortices enter the sample, the conduction at T -> 0 grows rapidly, showing unambiguously that delocalized quasiparticles are present at the lowest energies. The field dependence is very similar to that of UPt_3, a heavy-fermion superconductor with a line of nodes in the gap, and very different from the exponential dependence characteristic of s-wave superconductors. This is strong evidence for a highly anisotropic gap function in LuNi_2B_2C, possibly with nodes.

Effects of stoichiometry, purity, etching and distilling on resistance of MgB2 pellets and wire segments

We present a study of the effects of non-stoichiometry, boron purity, wire diameter and post-synthesis treatment (etching and Mg distilling) on the temperature dependent resistance and resistivity of sintered MgB2 pellets and wire segments. Whereas the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) varies between RRR \~ 4 to RRR > 20 for different boron purity, it is only moderately affected by non-stoichiometry (from 20% Mg deficiency to 20% Mg excess) and is apparently independent of wire diameter and presence of Mg metal traces on the wire surface. The obtained set of data indicates that RRR values in excess of 20 and residual resistivities as low as rho{0} ~ 0.4 mu Ohm cm are intrinsic material properties of high purity MgB2.

Effects of La substitution on superconducting state of CeCoIn5

We report effects of La substitution on superconducting state of heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5, as seen in transport and magnetization measurements. As opposed to the case of conventional superconductors, pair breaking by nonmagnetic La results in depression of Tc and indicates strong gap anisotropy. Upper critical field Hc2 values decrease with increased La concentration, but the critical field anisotropy, gamma=Hc2(a)/Hc2(c), does not change in the Ce_{1-x}La_xCoIn5 (x=0-0.15). The electronic system is in the clean limit for all values of x.

Negative isotope effect of a BCS-like gap; an inelastic light scattering study

In a prior study of the boron isotope effect on the transition temperature ($T_c$) of $R$Ni$_2$B$_2$C ($R$ = Y, Lu) system, a positive isotope effect was observed, e.g., $T_{c}(^{10}B)> T_{c}(^{11}B)$. BCS theory predicts that the superconducting gap at zero temperature ($Δ_0$) is proportional to $T_c$. Therefore, the gap should also show a positive boron isotope effect. On the contrary, in an inelastic light scattering study, we report a negative boron isotope effect on the energy $Ω$ of the gap-like feature in B$_{2g}$ symmetry, e.g., $Ω(^{10}B)< Ω(^{11}B)$. The origin of the effect is discussed in terms of selective probing of a non-conventional electron-phonon interaction on part of the Fermi surface, probably near the X point in the Brillouin zone.

NMR in the normal and in the superconducting state of MgB2 and comparison with AlB2

$^{11}$B NMR measurements have been performed in $^{11}$B enriched MgB$_2$ powder samples in external fields of 0.813, 1.55, 4.7 and 7.2 T both in the normal phase and in the superconducting phase. A previously unreported dipolar Pake doublet has been observed in the quadrupole perturbed NMR spectrum. The Knight shift can thus be accurately determined by narrowing the line with the Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) technique. Results of Knight shift ($K$) and relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) for both $^{11}$B and $^{27}$Al nuclei are reported also for AlB$_2$. The comparison of the data in the two compounds shows the dramatic drop of the density of states at the boron site in AlB$_2$ with respect to MgB$_2$. The experimental values for $K$ and $1/T_1$ are in most cases in good agreement with the theoretical values obtained from first principles calculations. The recovery of the nuclear magnetization below $T_c$ in random powder samples is non-exponential due to the anisotropy of the upper critical field. The exponential drop of $1/T_1$ in the superconducting phase observed by Kotegawa et al. is confirmed here but not the coherence peak.

Infrared and optical properties of pure and cobalt-doped LuNi_2B_2C

We present optical conductivity data for Lu(Ni$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$B$_2$C over a wide range of frequencies and temperatures for x=0 and x=0.09. Both materials show evidence of being good Drude metals with the infrared data in reasonable agreement with dc resistivity measurements at low frequencies. An absorption threshold is seen at approximately 700 cm-1. In the cobalt-doped material we see a superconducting gap in the conductivity spectrum with an absorption onset at 24 +/- 2 cm-1 = 3.9$ +/- 0.4 k_BT_c suggestive of weak to moderately strong coupling. The pure material is in the clean limit and no gap can be seen. We discuss the data in terms of the electron-phonon interaction and find that it can be fit below 600 cm-1 with a plasma frequency of 3.3 eV and an electron-phonon coupling constant lambda_{tr}=0.33 using an alpha^{2}F(omega) spectrum fit to the resistivity.

Energy gap and proximity effect in $MgB_2$ superconducting wires

Measurements of the penetration depth $λ(T,H)$ in the presence of a DC magnetic field were performed in $MgB_2$ wires. In as-prepared wires $λ(T,H<130 Oe)$ shows a strong diamagnetic downturn below $\approx 10 K$. A DC magnetic field of $130 Oe$ completely suppressed the downturn. The data are consistent with proximity coupling to a surface $Mg$ layer left during synthesis. A theory for the proximity effect in the clean limit, together with an assumed distribution of the $Mg$ layer thickness, qualitatively explains the field and temperature dependence of the data. Removal of the $Mg$ by chemical etching results in an exponential temperature dependence for $λ(T)$ with an energy gap of $2 Δ(0)/T_c\approx 1.54$ ($Δ(0) \approx 2.61 meV$), in close agreement with recent measurements on commercial powders and single crystals. This minimum gap is only 44% of the BCS weak coupling value, implying substantial anisotropy.

Magneto-optical studies of the uniform critical state in bulk MgB2

We present a detailed magneto-optical investigation of the magnetic flux penetration in polycrystalline MgB2 slabs made by direct reaction of B and Mg. Our results unambiguously indicate a uniform, Bean critical state magnetization behavior with almost no electromagnetic granularity. From the measured magnetic flux profiles we were able to extract the temperature dependence of the critical current density Jc(T). The Jc(T) value reaches 1.8x10^5 A/cm2 at 10K and 0.12T, in good agreement with global magnetization measurements.
