High-speed RF Switch Electronics for picking up of Electron-Positron Beam Bunches

Beam diagnostics is important to guarantee good quality of beam in particle accelerator. Both the electron and positron run in the tunnel in some modern electron positron colliders such as Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) to be built and Beijing Electron Positron Collider II (BEPC II). To measure the electron and positron beams, picking up of these two different bunches in real time is of notable concern. Because the time interval between adjacent electron and positron bunches is quite small, for example, 6 ns in CEPC, high-speed switch electronics is required. This paper presents the prototype design of a high-speed radio frequency (RF) electronics that can pick up nanosecond positron-electron beam bunches with a switching time of less than 6 ns. Fast separation of electron and positron is achieved based on RF switches and precise delay adjustment of the controlling signals (~10 ps). Initial tests have been conducted in the laboratory to evaluate the performance of electronics, the results indicate that this circuit can successfully pick up the bunch signal within a time interval of 6 ns, which makes it possible to further measure the electron and position beams simultaneously.

Application of FPGA Acceleration in ADC Performance Calibration

In recent years, high speed and high resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is widely employed in many physical experiments, especially in high precision time and charge measurement. The rapid increasing amount of digitized data demands faster computing. FPGA acceleration has an attracting prospect in data process for its stream process and parallel process feature. In this paper, an ADC performance calibration application based on FPGA acceleration is described. FPGA reads the ADC digitized data stream from PC memory, processes and then writes processed result back to the PC memory. PCIE bus is applied to increase the data transfer speed, and floating point algorithm is applied to improve the accuracy. The test result shows that FPGA acceleration can reduce the processing time of the ADC performance calibration compared with traditional method of C-based CPU processing. This frame of PCIE-based FPGA acceleration method can be applied in analysis and simulation in the future physical experiment for large ADC array, such as CCD camera and waveform digitization readout electronics calibration.

Shear driven formation of nano-diamonds at sub-gigapascals and 300 K

The transformation pathways of carbon at high pressures are of broad interest for synthesis of novel materials and for revealing the Earth's geological history. We have applied large plastic shear on graphite in rotational anvils to form hexagonal and nanocrystalline cubic diamond at extremely low pressures of 0.4 and 0.7 GPa, which are 50 and 100 times lower than the transformation pressures under hydrostatic compression and well below the phase equilibrium. Large shearing accompanied with pressure elevation to 3 GPa also leads to formation of a new orthorhombic diamond phase. Our results demonstrate new mechanisms and new means for plastic shear-controlled material synthesis at drastically reduced pressures, enabling new technologies for material synthesis. The results indicate that the micro-diamonds found in the low pressure-temperature crust could have formed during a large shear producing event, such as tectonic rifting and continued plate collision, without the need to postulate subduction to the mantle.

Formulation of the normal forms of Turing-Hopf bifurcation in reaction-diffusion systems with time delay

The normal forms up to the third order for a Hopf-steady state bifurcation of a general system of partial functional differential equations (PFDEs) is derived based on the center manifold and normal form theory of PFDEs. This is a codimension-two degenerate bifurcation with the characteristic equation having a pair of simple purely imaginary roots and a simple zero root, and the corresponding eigenfunctions may be spatially inhomogeneous. The PFDEs are reduced to a three-dimensional system of ordinary differential equations and precise dynamics near bifurcation point can be revealed by two unfolding parameters. The normal forms are explicitly written as functions of the Fréchet derivatives up to the third orders and characteristic functions of the original PFDEs, and they are presented in a concise matrix notation, which greatly eases the applications to the original PFDEs and is convenient for computer implementation. This provides a user-friendly approach of showing the existence and stability of patterned stationary and time-periodic solutions with spatial heterogeneity when the parameters are near a Turing-Hopf bifurcation point, and it can also be applied to reaction-diffusion systems without delay and the retarded functional differential equations without diffusion.

Turing-Hopf bifurcation and spatiotemporal patterns in a ratio-dependent diffusive Holling-Tanner system with time delay

The Turing-Hopf type spatiotemporal patterns in a diffusive Holling-Tanner model with discrete time delay is considered. A global Turing bifurcation theorem for $τ=0$ and a local Turing bifurcation theorem for $τ>0$ are given by the method of eigenvalue analysis and prior estimation. Further considering the degenerated situation, the existence of Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation and Turing-Hopf bifurcation are obtained. The normal form method is used to study the explicit dynamics near the Turing-Hopf singularity, and we establish the existence of various self-organized spatiotemporal patterns, such as two non-constant steady states (stripe patterns) coexist and two spatially inhomogeneous periodic solutions (spot patterns) coexist. Moreover, the Turing-Turing-Hopf type spatiotemporal patterns, that is a subharmonic phenomenon with two spatial wave numbers and one temporal frequency, are also found and theoretically explained, when there is another Turing bifurcation curve which is relatively closed to the studied one.

Spatiotemporal attractors generated by the Turing-Hopf bifurcation in a time-delayed reaction-diffusion system

We study the Turing-Hopf bifurcation and give a simple and explicit calculation formula of the normal forms for a general two-components system of reaction-diffusion equation with time delays. We declare that our formula can be automated by Matlab. At first, we extend the normal forms method given by Faria in 2000 to Hopf-zero singularity. Then, an explicit formula of the normal forms for Turing-Hopf bifurcation are given. Finally, we obtain the possible attractors of the original system near the Turing-Hopf singularity by the further analysis of the normal forms, which mainly include, the spatially non-homogeneous steady-state solutions, periodic solutions and quasi-periodic solutions.

Turing-Hopf bifurcation and spatio-temporal patterns of a ratio-dependent Holling-Tanner system with diffusion

A diffusive ratio-dependent Holling-Tanner system subject to Neumann boundary conditions is considered. The existence of multiple bifurcations, including Turing-Hopf bifurcation, Turing-Truing bifurcation, Hopf-double-Turing bifurcation and triple-Turing bifurcation, are given. Among them, the Turing-Hopf bifurcation are carried out in details by the normal form method. We theoretically prove that the system exists various spatio-temporal patterns, such as, non-constant steady state, the spatially inhomogeneous periodic or quasi-periodic solution, etc. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate our theoretical results.

High-temperature cyclic oxidation kinetics and microstructural transition mechanisms of Ti-6Al-4V composites reinforced with hybrid (TiC+TiB) networks

The microstructural features and high-temperature oxidation resistance of hybrid (TiC+TiB) networks reinforced Ti-6Al-4V composites were investigated after fabricated with reaction hot pressing technique. The inhomogeneous distribution of hybrid reinforcers resulted in a sort of stress-induced grain refinement for α-Ti matrix phase, which was further facilitated by heterogeneous nucleation upon additive interfaces. HRTEM analyses revealed the crystallographic orientation relation between TiB and alpha-Ti phases as (201)TiB//(-1100)alpha-Ti plus [11-2]//[0001] alpha-Ti, while TiC and α-Ti phases maintained the interrelation of (-200)TiC//(-2110) α-Ti and [001]TiC//[01-10] alpha-Ti. The hybridly reinforced Ti-6Al-4V/(TiC+TiB) composites displayed superior oxidation resistance to both the sintered matrix alloy and the two composites reinforced solely with TiC or TiB addition during the cyclic oxidation at 873, 973 and 1073 K respectively for 100 h. The hybrid reinforcers volume fraction was a more influential factor to improve oxidation resistance than the matrix alloy powder size. As temperature rose from 873 to 1073 K, the oxidation kinetics transferred from the nearly parabolic type through qusilinear tendency into the finally linear mode. This corresponded to the morphological transition of oxide scales from a continuous protective film to a partially damaged layer and ended up with the complete spallation of alternating alumina and rutile multilayers. A phenomenological model was proposed to elucidate the growth process of oxides scales. The release of thermal stress, the suppression of oxygen diffusion and the fastening of oxide adherence were found as the three major mechanisms to enhance the oxidation resistance of hybrid reinforced composites.

Ordering and dimensional crossovers in metallic glasses and liquids

The atomic-level structures of liquids and glasses are amorphous, lacking long-range order. We characterize the atomic structures by integrating radial distribution functions (RDF) from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for several metallic liquids and glasses: Cu46Zr54, Ni80Al20, Ni33.3Zr66.7, and Pd82Si18. Resulting cumulative coordination numbers (CN) show that metallic liquids have a dimension of d = 2.55 +/- 0.06 from the center atom to the first coordination shell and metallic glasses have d = 2.71 +/- 0.04, both less than 3. Between the first and second coordination shells, both phases crossover to a dimension of d = 3, as for a crystal. Observations from discrete atom center-of-mass position counting are corroborated by continuously counting Cu glass- and liquid-phase atoms on an artificial grid, which accounts for the occupied atomic volume. Results from Cu grid analysis show short-range d = 2.65 for Cu liquid and d = 2.76 for Cu glass. Cu grid structures crossover to d = 3 at ξ~8 Å (~3 atomic diameters). We study the evolution of local structural dimensions during quenching and discuss its correlation with the glass transition phenomenon.

Proposal of Readout Electronics for CSNS-WNS BaF2 Detector

BaF2 (Barium fluoride) detector is one of the experiment facilities at the under construction CSNS-WNS (White Neutron Source at China Spallation Neutron Source). It is designed for precisely measuring (n,gamma) cross section with total 92 crystal elements and completely 4 pi steradian coverage. In this proposal for readout electronics, waveform digitizing technique with 1GSps sampling rate and 12-bit resolution is adopted to precisely capture the detector signal. To solve the problem of massive data readout and processing, the readout electronics system is designed into a distributed architecture with 4 PXIe crates. The digitized detector's signal is concentrated to PXIe crate controller through PCIe bus on backplane and transmitted to data acquisition system over Gigabit Ethernet in parallel. Besides, clock and trigger can be fanned out synchronously to each electronic channel over a high-precision distributing network. Test results showed that the prototype of the readout electronics system achieved good performance and cooperated well.

Fast Control Latency Uncertainty Elimination for the BESIII ETOF Upgrade

A new fanning topology is proposed to precisely fan out fast control signals in the Beijing Spectrometer (BES III) end-cap time-of-flight (ETOF) electronics. However, uncertainty in transfer latency is introduced by the new fanning channel, which will degrade the precision of fast control. In this paper, latency uncertainty elimination for the BESIII ETOF upgrade is introduced. The latency uncertainty is determined by a Time-Digital-Converter (TDC) embedded in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and is eliminated by re-capturing at synchronous and determinate time. Compared with the existing method of Barrel-cap TOF (BTOF), it has advantages of flexible structure, easy calibration and good adaptability. Field tests on the BES III ETOF system show that this method effectively eliminates transfer latency uncertainty.

A Prototype Scalable Readout System for Micro-pattern Gas Detectors

A scalable readout system (SRS) is designed to provide a general solution for different micro-pattern gas detectors. The system mainly consists of three kinds of modules: the ASIC card, the Adapter card and the Front-End Card (FEC). The ASIC cards, mounted with particular ASIC chips, are designed for receiving detector signals. The Adapter card is in charge of digitizing the output signals from several ASIC cards. The FEC, edged-mounted with the Adapter, has a FPGA-based reconfigurable logic and I/O interfaces, allowing users to choose various ASIC cards and Adapters for different types of detectors. The FEC transfers data through Gigabit Ethernet protocol realized by a TCP processor (SiTCP) IP core in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The readout system can be tailored to specific sizes to adapt to the experiment scales and readout requirements. In this paper, two kinds of multi-channel ASIC chips, VA140 and AGET, are applied to verify the concept of this SRS architecture. Based on this VA140 or AGET SRS, one FEC covers 8 ASIC (VA140) cards handling 512 detector channels, or 4 ASIC (AGET) cards handling 256 detector channels. More FECs can be assembled in chassis to handle thousands of detector channels.

Design and simulation of a 12-bit, 40 MSPS asynchronous SAR ADC for the readout of PMT signal

High precision and large dynamic range measurement are required in the readout systems for the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) in Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). This paper presents a prototype of 12-bit 40 MSPS Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) designed for the readout of LHAASO WCDA. Combining this ADC and the front-end ASIC finished in our previous work, high precision charge measurement can be achieved based on the digital peak detection method. This ADC is implemented based on power-efficient Successive Approximation Register (SAR) architecture, which incorporates the key parts such as Capacitive Digital-to-Analog Converter (CDAC), dynamic comparator and asynchronous SAR control logic. The simulation results indicate that the Effective Number Of Bits (ENOB) with a sampling rate of 40 MSPS is better than 10 bits in an input frequency range below 20 MHz, while its core power consumption is 6.6 mW per channel. The above results are good enough for the readout requirements of the WCDA.

The Trigger System for the External Target Experiment in CSR of HIRFL

A trigger system was designed for the external target experiment in the Cooling Storage Ring (CSR) of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). Considering that different detectors are scattered in a large area, the trigger system is designed based on a master-slave structure and fiber-based serial data transmission technique. The trigger logic is organized in hierarchies, and flexible reconfiguration of the trigger function is achieved based on command register access or overall field-programmable gate array (FPGA) logic on-line reconfiguration controlled by remote computers. We also conducted tests to confirm the function of the trigger electronics, and the results indicate that this trigger system works well.

Neutrino Physics with JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.
