Search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay $ \tau^{\pm} \to \mu^{\pm} \gamma$ at Belle II

We present a search for the lepton-flavor-violating decay $\tau^{\pm}\to\mu^{\pm}\gamma$ using a data sample that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 428 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We employ a multivariate classifier to suppress the backgrounds from the Standard Model processes, and the signal extraction is performed using an extended maximum-likelihood fit. Since no significant excess over the expected background is observed, we set an upper limit on the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(\tau^{\pm}\to\mu^{\pm}\gamma) < 9.5$ $ (12.2)\times10^{-8}$ at the 90\% (95\%) confidence level, using the CL${_s}$ technique.

Search for axion-like particles decaying to two photons at Belle II

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model and provide a well-motivated portal between visible and hidden sectors through their coupling to photons. We search for ALPs produced in the process $e^{+}e^{-}\to\gamma a$, $a\to\gamma\gamma$, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $408~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. Events containing three photons are used to reconstruct the ALP as a narrow peak in the di-photon invariant mass spectrum over the range $0.17 < m_{a} < 9.80~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$. No significant excess above background is observed. We set 95\% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section and on the ALP-photon coupling $g_{a\gamma\gamma}$, reaching sensitivities at the level of $10^{-4}~\mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$. The limits are the most restrictive to date over nearly the entire mass range $0.17 < m_{a} < 5.00~\mathrm{GeV}/c^{2}$, and improve upon previous results by up to a factor 9.

Efficiency measurements of GEM GE1/1 chambers in the upgraded CMS Endcap Muon System using 2023 collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV

The CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider employs Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, a technology based on gaseous ionization, as one of the muon detectors. The muon spectrometer is being upgraded to handle the increased muon flux in the forward region. This study analyzes muon detection efficiency in the GE1/1 triple-GEM detector, using 2023 proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV. A dataset enriched with muons from Z boson decay, with a total recorded luminosity of 17.8 fb$^{-1}$ has been used for this study. The detection efficiency of 137 GEM detectors are measured using muon trajectories established using other detectors in the tracking and muon systems, without use of the GEM detectors. The average efficiency of 137 GEM detectors is $\sim$93.3$\%$. A subset of 108 detectors that had no shorts were operated at the nominal HV working point with average efficiency of $\sim$96$\%$. Efficiency is found to be unaffected by the number of p-p interactions per bunch crossing (pile-up).

Charged-lepton identification at Belle~II

Effective particle identification capabilities are a strategic priority for the physics program of the Belle~II experiment. We describe the algorithms used at Belle~II for identifying electrons and muons and separating them from charged hadrons. We present the performance obtained by the experiment during Run 1, which consists of 428 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider SuperKEKB between 2019 and 2022 at center-of-mass energies near the mass of the $\Upsilon(4S)$.

Measurement of mixing-induced CP violation in the decay $B^0 \to \pi^0 \pi^0$

Measurements of charge-parity (CP) violation in quark transitions provide stringent tests of the current theory and sensitive probes of particles or interactions beyond it. We report the first measurement of mixing-induced CP violation in $B^0\to\pi^0\pi^0$ decays. The measurement uses 190 million $\Upsilon(4S)\to B^{0}\overline{B}{}^0$ events collected with the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. A new approach that exploits the quantum entanglement of the $B^{0}\overline{B}{}^0$ pair enables a decay-time-dependent analysis without reconstructing the $B^0 \to \pi^0\pi^0$ decay position. We measure the mixing-induced CP-violating coefficient to be $S_{\pi^{0}\pi^{0}} = 0.61^{+0.75}_{-0.79}\,(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.11\,(\mathrm{syst})$, attaining a precision that would require a data set twenty times as large with a conventional analysis. We also measure the direct CP-violating coefficient to be $C_{\pi^{0}\pi^{0}} = 0.05 \pm 0.28\,(\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.07\,(\mathrm{syst})$. These results substantially improve the constraints from $B \to \pi\pi$ decays on the CP-violating phase $\phi_2$ of the quark-mixing matrix using far less data than had previously been assumed necessary.

Measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation parameters in $B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} \pi^{0} \gamma$ decays at Belle and Belle II

We perform a measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation parameters in $B^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} \pi^{0} \gamma$ decays using a dataset of approximately $772 \times 10^6$ and $521 \times 10^6$ $\Upsilon(4S)$ decays collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments, respectively. The measured parameters for the combined dataset in the $K^{*0}(892)$ dominated region ($M_{K_{S}^{0} \pi^{0}} \in [0.8,1.0] \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$) are $S = 0.09 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.02$ and $C = -0.09 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.04$. For the non-$K^{*0}(892)$ region ($M_{K_{S}^{0} \pi^{0}} \in [1.0,1.8] \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$), the corresponding values are $S = -0.32 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.09$ and $C = -0.07 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.08$. The first quoted uncertainties are statistical, while the second ones are systematic. These results are consistent with Standard Model predictions and more precise than previous measurements.

Observation of $e^+e^-\to\eta\Upsilon(2S)$ and search for $e^+e^-\to\eta\Upsilon(1S),~\gamma X_b$ at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.75 GeV

We present an analysis of the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\to\eta\Upsilon(1S)$, $\eta\Upsilon(2S)$, and $\gamma X_b$ with $X_b\to\pi^+\pi^-\chi_{bJ},~\chi_{bJ}\to\gamma\Upsilon(1S)$ $(J=1,~2)$ reconstructed from $\gamma\gamma\pi^+\pi^-\ell^+\ell^-~(\ell=e,~\mu)$ final states in $19.6\rm~\rm fb^{-1}$ of Belle II data collected at four energy points near the peak of the $\Upsilon(10753)$ resonance. Here, $X_b$ is a hypothetical bottomonium-sector partner of the $X(3872)$. In the process $e^{+}e^{-} \to \eta \Upsilon(2S)$, we observe a signal with a significance that exceeds $6.0\sigma$. Based on an analysis of the Born cross-section, the hypothesis that these events are associated solely with the production of the $\Upsilon(5S)$ or $\Upsilon(10753)$ resonances is rejected at the level of 3.6$\sigma$. This suggests that the observed events are more likely to arise from a new state near the $B^{*}\bar{B}^{*}$ threshold or from a substantial continuum production. No significant signal is observed for $e^{+}e^{-}\to\eta\Upsilon(1S)$ or $\gamma X_b$. Upper limits on the Born cross sections for the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\to\eta\Upsilon(1S)$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\to\gamma X_b$ with $X_b\to\pi^+\pi^-\chi_{bJ}$ are determined.

Search for the lepton-flavor-violating $\tau^{-} \rightarrow e^{\mp} \ell^{\pm} \ell^{\mp}$ decays at Belle II

We present the result of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays $\tau^- \rightarrow e^\mp \ell^\pm \ell^-$, where $\ell$ is a muon or an electron, using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 428 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The selection of $e^+e^- \to\tau^+\tau^-$ events containing a signal candidate is based on an inclusive-tagging reconstruction and on a boosted decision tree to suppress background. Upper limits on the branching fractions between 1.3 and 2.5 $\times 10^{-8}$ are set at the 90% confidence level. These results are the most stringent bounds to date for four of the modes.

Measurement of the $ D^{0}\rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{+}e^{+}e^{-} $ branching fraction and search for $ D^{0}\rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-} $ and $D^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}e^{+}e^{-} $ decays at Belle

We present a study of the rare charm meson decays $ D^{0}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}e^{+}e^{-} $, $ \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-} $, and $ K^{-}\pi^{+}e^{+}e^{-} $ using a 942 fb$^{-1}$ data set collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $ e^{+}e^{-} $ collider. We use $ D^{0} $ candidates identified by the charge of the pion in $ D^{*} \rightarrow D^{0} \pi $ decays and normalize the branching fractions to $ D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{+} $ decays. The branching fraction for decay $ D^{0} \rightarrow K^{-}\pi^{+}e^{+}e^{-} $ is measured to be (39.6 $\pm$ 4.5 (stat) $\pm$ 2.9 (syst)) $\times$ $10^{-7}$, with the dielectron mass in the $ \rho/\omega $ mass region $ 675 < m_{ee} < 875 $ MeV$/c^{2}$. We also search for $ D^{0}\rightarrow h^{-} h^{(\prime)+}e^{+}e^{-} $ ($ h^{(\prime)}=K,\,\pi $) decays with the dielectron mass near the $\eta$ and $\phi$ resonances, and away from these resonances for the $ K^{+}K^{-}e^{+}e^{-} $ and $ \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-} $ modes. For these modes, we find no significant signals and set 90$\%$ confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions at the $\mathcal{O}$(10$^{-7}$) level.

Search for an Axion-Like Particle in $B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrow\gamma\gamma)$ Decays at Belle

We report a search for an axion-like particle $a$ in $B\rightarrow K^{(*)} a (\rightarrow\gamma\gamma)$ decays using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. The search is based on a $711 \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon 4S$ resonance energy, corresponding to a sample of $772\times10^6$ $\Upsilon 4S$ events. In this study, we search for the decay of the axion-like particle into a pair of photons, $a \rightarrow \gamma\gamma$. We scan the two-photon invariant mass in the range $0.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.50\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ for the $K$ modes and $0.16\ \mathrm{GeV/}c^2-4.20\ \mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ for the $K^{*}$ modes. No significant signal is observed in any of the modes, and 90\% confidence level upper limits are established on the coupling to the $W$ boson, $g_aW$, as a function of $a$ mass. The limits range from $3 \times 10^{-6} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ to $3 \times 10^{-5} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$, improving the current constraints on $g_aW$ by a factor of two over the most stringent previous experimental results.

Measurement of the CP asymmetry in $D^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0$ decays at Belle II

We measure the CP asymmetry in $D^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0$ decays reconstructed in $e^+ e^-$ collisions at the Belle II experiment using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 428 fb$^{-1}$. A control sample of $D^+ \to \pi^+ K_{S}$ decays is used to correct for detection and production asymmetries. The result, $A_{CP}(D^+ \to \pi^+\pi^0) =(-1.8 \pm 0.9 \pm 0.1)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, is the most precise determination to date. It agrees with the prediction of CP symmetry from the standard model, and with results of previous measurements.

Search for a Dark Higgs Boson Produced in Association with Inelastic Dark Matter at the Belle II Experiment

Inelastic dark matter models that have two dark matter particles and a massive dark photon can reproduce the observed relic dark matter density without violating cosmological limits. The mass splitting between the two dark matter particles $\chi_{1}$ and $\chi_{2}$, with $m(\chi_{2}) > m(\chi_{1})$, is induced by a dark Higgs field and a corresponding dark Higgs boson $h^{\prime}$. We present a search for dark matter in events with two vertices, at least one of which must be displaced from the interaction region, and missing energy. Using a $365\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected at Belle II, which operates at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider, we observe no evidence for a signal. We set upper limits on the product of the production cross section $\sigma\left(e^+e^- \to h^\prime \chi_1 \chi_2\right)$, and the product of branching fractions $\mathcal{B}\left(\chi_2\to\chi_1 e^+ e^-\right)\times\mathcal{B}\left(h^\prime\to x^+x^-\right)$, where $x^+x^-$ indicates $\mu^+\mu^-, \pi^+\pi^-$, or $K^+K^-$, as functions of $h^{\prime}$ mass and lifetime at the level of $10^{-1}\,\mbox{fb}$. We set model-dependent upper limits on the dark Higgs mixing angle at the level of $10^{-5}$ and on the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter at the level of $10^{-3}$. This is the first search for dark Higgs bosons in association with inelastic dark matter.

Search for lepton flavor-violating decay modes $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0}\tau^\pm\ell^\mp$ ($\ell = e,\mu$) with hadronic B-tagging at Belle and Belle II

We present the results of a search for the charged-lepton-flavor violating decays $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}\tau^\pm \ell^{\mp}$, where $\ell^{\mp}$ is either an electron or a muon. The results are based on 365 fb$^{-1}$ and 711 fb$^{-1}$ datasets collected with the Belle II and Belle detectors, respectively. We use an exclusive hadronic $B$-tagging technique, and search for a signal decay in the system recoiling against a fully reconstructed $B$ meson. We find no evidence for $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0}\tau^\pm \ell^{\mp}$ decays and set upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of $(2.9-6.4)\times10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level.

Test of lepton flavor universality with measurements of $R(D^{+})$ and $R(D^{*+})$ using semileptonic $B$ tagging at the Belle II experiment

We report measurements of the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal R}(D^{(*)+}) = \frac{{\cal B}(\overline{B}{}^0 \to D^{(*)+} \,\tau^- \, \overline{\nu}_\tau)}{{\cal B}(\overline{B}{}^0 \to D^{(*)+} \, \ell^- \, \overline{\nu}_\ell)}$, where $\ell$ denotes either an electron or a muon. These ratios test the universality of the charged-current weak interaction. The results are based on a $365\, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider, which operates at a center-of-mass energy corresponding to the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, just above the threshold for $B\overline{B}{}$ production. Signal candidates are reconstructed by selecting events in which the companion $B$ meson from the $\Upsilon(4S) \to B\overline{B}{}$ decay is identified in semileptonic modes. The $\tau$ lepton is reconstructed via its leptonic decays. We obtain ${\cal R}(D^+) = 0.418 \pm 0.074 ~({\mathrm{stat}}) \pm 0.051 ~({\mathrm{syst}})$ and ${\cal R}(D^{*+}) = 0.306 \pm 0.034 ~({\mathrm{stat}}) \pm 0.018 ~({\mathrm{syst}})$, which are consistent with world average values. Accounting for the correlation between them, these values differ from the Standard Model expectation by a collective significance of $1.7$ standard deviations.

Search for $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0} \tau^+ \tau^-$ decays at the Belle II experiment

We present a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay $B^0 \to K^{\ast 0} \tau^+ \tau^-$ with data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The analysis uses a 365 fb$^{-1}$ data sample recorded at the center-of-mass energy of the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. One of the $B$ mesons produced in the $\Upsilon(4S)\to B^0 \bar{B}^0$ process is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while its companion $B$ meson is required to decay into a $K^{\ast 0}$ and two $\tau$ leptons of opposite charge. The $\tau$ leptons are reconstructed in final states with a single electron, muon, charged pion or charged $\rho$ meson, and additional neutrinos. We set an upper limit on the branching ratio of $BR(B^0 \to K^{\ast 0} \tau^+ \tau^-) < 1.8 \times 10^{-3}$ at the 90% confidence level, which is the most stringent constraint reported to date.

Search for Pcs(4459) and Pcs(4338) in Upsilon(1S,2S) inclusive decays at Belle

Using data samples of 102 million Upsilon(1S) events and 158 million Upsilon(2S) events collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider, we search for [udsccbar] pentaquark states decaying to Jpsi Lambda. Using the first observations of Upsilon(1S, 2S) inclusive decays to Jpsi Lambda, we find evidence of the P_ccbars(4459)0 state with a local significance of 3.3 standard deviations, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. We measure the mass and width of the Pccbars(4459)0 to be (4471.7 +- 4.8 +- 0.6) MeV/c2 and (21.9 +- 13.1 +- 2.7) MeV, respectively. The branching fractions for P_ccbars(4459)0 production are measured to be B[Upsilon(1S) -> P_ccbars(4459)0/ Pbar_ccbars(4459)0 + anything] = (3.5 +- 2.0 +- 0.2)*10-6 and B[Upsilin(2S) -> P_ccbars(4459)0/ Pbar_ccbars(4459)0 +anything] = (2.9 +- 1.7 +- 0.4)*10-6. The inclusive branching fractions of Upsilon(1S, 2S) -> Jpsi Lambda/Lambdabar are measured to be B[Upsilin(1S) -> Jpsi Lambda/Lambdabar + anything] = (36.9 +- 5.3 +- 2.4)*10-6 and B[Upsilon(2S) -> Jpsi Lambda/Lambdabar + anything] = (22.3 +- 5.7 +- 3.1)*10-6. We measure the visible cross section $\sigma(e^+e^- \to J/psi \Lambda/\bar\Lambda$ + anything) = (90 +- 14 +- 6) fb for the continuum production at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52$ GeV. In all cases, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Measurement of the branching fraction and $\it CP$-violating asymmetry of the decay $B^{0} \rightarrow \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ using $387$ million bottom-antibottom meson pairs in Belle II data
